Daily Star claims Reservoir Dogs star Michael Madsen is to appear in Channel 5 reality show

Barely a week to go until the new series of Celebrity Big Brother on Channel 5. Yes, it does only feel like last week, doesn't it? Speculation has already been building about the identity of the new contestants, not least in the Daily Star which tells us that Reservoir Dogs star Michael Madsen will be entering the house. Are you gonna bark all day, little doggy, or are you gonna bite? Alas he will not be joined by Boy George, who took to Twitter to quash speculation about his imminent reality show participation. "I'm Not doing CBB," said Bg. "Who knows, I might do my own reality show!" Now there's a thought. Also touted for starring roles on the show, which returns next Thursday, are Ruby Wax, Playboy twins – it says here – Kristina and Karissa Shannon »

Boy George "absolutely not" in Celebrity Big Brother

26 December 2011 6:29 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Boy George has insisted that he is "absolutely not" taking part in Celebrity Big Brother when it returns next month. The singer quashed rumours that he has agreed to join the Channel 5 show on Twitter, claiming that he would be performing abroad with Culture Club instead. "I'm absolutely not going into CBB!" he wrote. "But I am looking forward to Dubai & Australia with Culture Club!" Reports circulated last month that the 50-year-old demanded £1m for an appearance in the Celebrity Big Brother house. He was banned from competing in an earlier edition of the show on Channel 4 following his conviction for the false imprisonment of a male escort in 2009. (more) »

Morning Meme: Lance Bass Cries Foul, Sneak Peek At "Magic Mike" and George Takei's Greatest (and Weirdest) Moments

26 December 2011 5:25 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Just a reminder that we're on a reduced posting schedule this week. I'll be here every morning, and snicks in the evening, and there may be something in between, but we need to feed the reindeer at this point. We still love you.

I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say I don't like Lance Bass' attitude about the whole "tranny" incident. He wrote a piece on Huffington Post complaining the gay sites immediately called him out on the slur, while HuffPost invited him to write about the incident. And besides, how was he supposed to know? I have two problems here. First, I don't have Lance's cell number, or I could have given him a guest column. Of course, my email is on the masthead here if he felt he needed a forum - I would have hooked him up! But the bigger issue »

Watch the Best Holiday Music Videos of All Time

25 December 2011 12:42 PM, PST | TVGuide - Breaking News | See recent TVGuide - Breaking News news »

Holiday entertainment isn't just about cheesy movies and TV specials, there are corny music videos too!

Yahoo Music counts down the 15 best holiday music videos of all time, from David Bowie and Bing Crosby's odd duet for MTV on "Little Drummer Boy" to boy band 'NSync's politically correct "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" and, of course, Band Aid's altruistic single "Feed the World," which showed us that, before they all became ridiculous public figures, Sting, Bono, Phil Collins, and Boy George are all really good singers.

Boy George: 'My issues would never have happened to David Bowie'

20 December 2011 4:31 PM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Boy George has insisted that he is now "in control" of his life after his recent troubles with the law. The Culture Club singer was previously sentenced to four months in prison after being found guilty of falsely imprisoning a male escort, who he also beat with a metal chain. He was also ordered to undertake community service in New York for wasting police time in 2006. George explained that he had been reluctant to "grow up" in the past, and believes that his issues would never have happened to David Bowie. He told Vogue: "In prison, I was like, 'This is my fault I'm here now'. In New York, when I swept up the streets of Chinatown during my probation, I remember I was saying, 'This would never have (more) »

The Year in Television: The Biggest TV Stinkers of 2011

20 December 2011 7:23 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

This is the fifth in a multi-part series, The Year in Television 2011.

Tastes in television can of course be very subjective. One show may be your cup of tea, but not for the person sitting next to you. For instance, I love Louie, but my husband can’t stand it. I thought Torchwood: Miracle Day was a yawner, and yet the show seemed to have its vocal fans right here on AfterElton.

But where reasonable people can differ on any number of shows, the list below we can probably All agree on. These are the true TV stinkers of 2011. Now there probably were worse shows in 2011 than what appears on this list (H8R for instance), but all the projects appearing below added insult to injury: they might actually have been good. Our list includes the new shows that totally botched a decent concept... or squandered a good cast. And »

North Korea's Leader Kim Jong-il Dies

19 December 2011 12:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

North Korea's controversial leader Kim Jong-il has died at the age of 69, according to reports.

Jong-Il passed away on a train after reportedly suffering a heart attack while visiting an area outside the capital city of Pyongyang on Saturday. His death was announced in a "special broadcast" on state-run TV networks on Monday, reports the BBC.

The Communist leader, who suffered diabetes and heart disease, has been in poor health since suffering a stroke in 2008.

Jong-Il took power in the country in 1994 when his father Kim Il Sung died, but became a controversial leader by running a tight regime.

He was widely criticised for alleged human rights abuses and for threatening the stability of the region by pursuing a nuclear weapons programme and testing long-range missiles.

Jong-Il was regularly satirised on animated U.S. comedy South Park, and he was the main villain in the TV hit's creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone's 2004 movie Team America: World Police.

Following the news of his death, several stars took to their Twitter.com accounts to comment on his passing.

In a post, singer Boy George writes, "Kim Jong Il is gone! A united Korea is this possible? Let's hope so!", while actress and human rights activist Mia Farrow laments, "By most accounts his (equally strange looking) son will bring no change to N Korea."

Music mogul Russell Simmons adds, "Praying for peace and prosperity for the North Korean people after the passing of Kim Jong Il."

Jong-Il's third son, Kim Jong Un, was unveiled as his successor last year although an official announcement about the new leader has yet to be made. »

Douglas Booth: Lines of beauty

17 December 2011 4:07 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

You could spend a lifetime gazing at pictures of Douglas Booth, so the Observer fashion team cast him as Dorian Gray, the man who sold his soul to remain gorgeous. Is this 19-year-old actor the most beautiful boy in the world?

You're disgustingly good looking," I say. I can't help it. It's been on the tip of my tongue, like a complimentary ulcer, ever since I sat down opposite Douglas Booth, here, on a sofa, at a London hotel of his choice. He looks like naive art. He looks like an Elizabeth Peyton painting. I've actually interrupted him. He was in the middle of telling me about his worst nightmare – being leched at in a nightclub. "But you're ridiculously handsome. Look at you," I screech. Somebody looks up from their tea. Booth, to his credit, grimaces. Even with his mouth twisted, though, he looks beautiful. I grind my teeth to stop more praise falling out. »

80's Culture Club Singer Boy George wants America Travel Ban Lifted

17 December 2011 11:50 AM, PST | National Ledger | See recent National Ledger news »

British singer Boy George is determined to overturn an order banning him from traveling to the U.S., insisting it's "a horrible feeling" to be prevented from visiting the country. The Karma Chameleon singer was detained by cops in 2005 after they discovered cocaine in his New York apartment during a call-out over a reported burglary. Boy George denied the substance was his. He later pleaded guilty to falsely reporting a burglary and was fined, sentenced to five days of community service, and ordered to attend a drug rehabilitation program. The former Culture Club frontman, who has battled substance issues in the past, reveals the incident still affects him and a travel ban is currently in place - but he's doing all he can to overturn it. He tells the Pink News website, "I'm working on it. I want to go back to America so much. That first American gig is »

Daily Briefing. Grimly Reaping in 2011

11 December 2011 7:40 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

As year-end rituals go, remembering those we've lost over the past twelve months is the solemn twin of list-making, though it's often no less an act of celebration. In the new issue of the Brooklyn Rail, Charles Bernstein and Susan Bee look back on the life of George Kuchar, "one of the most creative, original, and influential filmmakers of our time, straddling two generations of North American iconoclasts, from Stan Brakhage, Ken Jacobs, Rudy Burckhardt, Kenneth Anger, and Michael Snow to Warren Sonbert, Ernie Gehr, Abigail Child, and Henry Hills. Often collaborating with his twin brother, Mike, George Kuchar started making films as a Bronx teenager, and the brothers' early films already show the ingenuity, exuberance, and do-it-yourself charm that would pervade scores of their subsequent films."

DVD Review: 'Uncle David'

★☆☆☆☆ There seemed to be much promise to Uncle David (2010), co-directed by Mike Nicholls (the man behind the 2008 TV special Living with Boy George), Gary Reich and David Hoyle, who also wrote and stars in the film along side fellow co-writer Ashley Ryder. The story (what there is of it) concerns David (Hoyle), an ageing campsite queen who lives in a caravan by the sea, and his young nephew Ashley (Ryder) who comes to stay with him. As the weekend progresses so does David and Ashley's relationship in a way that is hardly natural for an uncle and his nephew.

"The Daily Show" Greatest Gay Hits Volume 2

5 December 2011 5:01 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Back in October of 2007 we put together a compendium of what we considered the greatest gay moments from The Daily Show's video archives. Everything from Jon Stewart sparring with Bill Bennett over gay marriage in 2006 all the way back to a hilarious 1999 Boy George interview by Beth Littleford.

But when it comes to Lgbt issues, Jon and his band of fake news reporters were just getting started. After all, in recent years they've had Dadt, Prop 8, Ken Reker, Nom and Maggie Gallagher and more to skewer.

Here are some of the best and most pointedly gay-supportive Daily Show moments since 2007. Did we miss something substantive? Feel free to add your favorites to the comments!

Interview with Mike Huckabee, Pt. 2

Dec. 9, 2008

Jon Stewart continues racking up the gay ally points as he nails just what's so offensive about opposition to marriage equality based on "faith." Oh, Stewart starts out nice and finishes nice, »

Boy George has urged Adele to quit smoking. The 'Rumour Has It' singer has had to undergo emergency throat surgery in recent weeks to protect her vocal cords and to stem bleeding from a benign polyp. I gave up smoking six months ago which was the best thing I ever did. "I used to try to convince myself it made me sound (more) »
