Everything That's Happened Since Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Split Up

27 May 2017 1:05 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Image Source: Getty / Steve Zak Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck finally filed for divorce in April after initially announcing their split in 2015 - and the fact that it's almost been two years isn't the most surprising part of it. People reported that the former couple actually filed together and without lawyers, which are two moves that are increasingly rare with dramatic Hollywood splits. They are also both seeking joint legal and physical custody of their children. All in all, things sound downright amicable, though it's been kind of a rollercoaster of events ever since they first announced they were divorcing. The seemingly friendly exes had been throwing us for a loop, especially since there was news that the divorce was off and then on. To iron out this celebrity relationship timeline (and allow you to have the proper authority when discussing this with your friends at happy hour), we've put »

Wakefield movie review: man of the house (emeritus)

26 May 2017 7:35 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

MaryAnn’s quick take… An appalling elevation of toxic masculinity to something poignant, radical, and heroic. As unpleasant and as passive-aggressive as its horrid protagonist. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I wish I could figure out just what the hell writer-director Robin Swicord (The Jane Austen Book Club) thinks she is saying with the appalling Wakefield, a movie as unpleasant and as passive-aggressive as its horrid protagonist. Because all it looks and feels like is an elevation of toxic masculinity — of emotional withdrawal, delusions about one’s own rationality, pretensions about one’s boldness, and disdain for women, among other nasty things — to a level meant to be poignant, radical, and heroic all at once. And it’s nothing of the sort.

Rather than face a momentary embarrassment, »

6 Women of Color in Supporting Roles Who Deserve to Star on Their Own Shows

25 May 2017 5:11 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

TV trends come and go, but who would’ve thought that, with all the focus on inclusion in the past few years, there would now be an uptick of, as IndieWire’s Michael Schneider puts it, “white dudes in crisis” on TV?

To fill the diversity void, the networks have added actors of color to supporting roles. It’s heartening to see that this has created a more realistic picture on TV of what the world looks like, such as the marriage between Zach Braff’s and Tiya Sircar’s characters on “Alex Inc.” representing the growing number of mixed-race marriages in America. Unfortunately, it’s also disappointing to see so many of these favorite actresses get shunted from one supporting role to the next.

Jennifer Garner Has Perfected the Art of Drinking Coffee While Wearing a Clown Nose

25 May 2017 10:55 AM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Jennifer Garner is in the Red Nose Day spirit. Ahead of the annual event airing in the Us on Thursday, the actress was spotted getting in on the fun by wearing a red rubber nose while running errands in La with her mom, Patricia, and son Samuel; the trio smiled as they walked down the street in matching red noses, and Jennifer made sure not to let it interfere with taking sips of her coffee. The actress seems to be in good spirits since officially filing for divorce from estranged husband Ben Affleck. Though Ben has reportedly moved out of the house he shared with Jen and their three kids, they spent Easter weekend together as a family and are committed to staying civil while coparenting their son, Samuel, and daughters, Violet and Seraphina. Bryan Cranston’s ‘Wakefield’ Highlights Slow Indie Box Office on Cannes Weekend

21 May 2017 11:08 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

With all eyes on Cannes this weekend, it was slow going for art house titles at the box office, with the slate of newcomers dominated by single-theater releases. Written and directed by Robin Swicord and based on a short story by E.L. Doctorow, “Wakefield” stars Cranston as a Manhattan lawyer living the stereotypical American dream: a beautiful wife (Garner), two kids and a nice house. But deep inside, he finds his domestic life suffocating and decides to »

Film Review: ‘Everything, Everything’

18 May 2017 3:26 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

How can she ignore the boy next door? Well, she can’t. Never mind that 18-year-old Maddy Whittier (Amandla Stenberg) has been told by her protective mom (Anika Noni Rose) that she can never leave their hermetically sealed home because she’s been diagnosed with Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (Scid), a genetic condition that makes her “allergic to the world.” When Olly (Nick Robinson), a hunky teen with floppy hair, moves into the neighborhood with his dysfunctional family, the girl in the bubble is immediately smitten with the boy on the other side of her window — and, after a while, more than willing to risk infection for some interaction.

Such is the premise of “Everything, Everything,” the latest screen adaptation of a Ya novel about young lovers who try to surmount apparently insurmountable obstacles in the way of what could be a tragically short happily ever after. For the first hour or so, »
