3 October 2014 9:00 AM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Steve Martin has been named recipient of the highly prestigious AFI Life Achievement Award to be presented June 4th and aired on TNT and later on sister network TCM.  After generally reserving this coveted prize to actors and directors who made their mark in dramatic films this is second time in the past three years that the American Film Institute has decided to lighten things up by giving their award to a person who made their mark in comedy.  And it has paid off.  Mel Brooks got the honor in 2013 and it resulted not only in a hilarious and memorable evening, it got higher ratings and brought the AFI special its first Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special  in August.  But Martin is the first recipient who actually started and made their reputation as a stand up comic. Treacherous Uncoupling: Ayer’s Latest May is Fun, Brutally Violent Nonsense

Okay, so, if you can keep in mind that the outcome of its tizzied, conventional plot may not add up as nice and neat as purists may demand, as well as ignore several over-the-tip flourishes concerning hypermasculine braggadocio, you might actually enjoy David Ayer’s latest directorial effort, Sabotage. Fans of his last film, the superior cop drama, End of Watch, may find this follow-up a violently prurient stab at box office glory rather than a bona fide counterpoint, but let’s keep in mind that soft spots were evident there as well (such as the believability of Gyllenhaal and Pena during the vicious unspooling of that plot). Here, we find the Training Day scribe operating in his usual mien of bombastic violence and urban decay, where we get rated R onslaughts that dare to be convey bloody, brutal and repulsive, »

Along with this sequel in the works, the studio will release Hot Tub Time Machine 2 at the end of this year, Poltergeist next summer, and they are also hoping to turn Dwayne Johnson's Hercules into a franchise. MGM is also working on an animated version of The Addams Family.

Ice Cube will return as Calvin, the barbershop owner he portrayed in 2002's Barbershop and 2004's Barbershop 2: Back In Business. The studio hopes to bring back Cedric the Entertainer, who appeared in both movies as Eddie, and Queen Latifah, who played Gina in Barbershop 2: Back In Business and the 2005 spin-off Beauty Shop.
