HBO Comedy Ballers Lands Season 3 Order

28 July 2016 12:10 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Spencer Strasmore is a go-getter – and that never-say-die attitude has clearly proved infectious at HBO. Two weeks into the show’s sophomore run, the network has announced plans to renew Ballers for a third season, ensuring Strasmore’s career as an astute financial manager stretches long into 2017.

Set against the sun-kissed streets of Miami, it is the seemingly omnipresent Dwayne Johnson that plays the part of Spencer Strasmore. As an ex-football player himself, Johnson’s charismatic lead knows a thing or two about navigating the lavish lifestyles of current and former superstars, but as is the case in the current season, Strasmore finds himself going toe-to-toe with Andy Garcia’s hot new player in town.

As Deadline reports, Ballers season 2 is off to a commendable start, with the premiere episode pulling in upwards of 5.7 million viewers. This, coupled with the star power of Dwayne Johnson – who leads a cast that comprises Rob Corrdry, »

HBO Orders A Third Season Of "Ballers"

28 July 2016 9:05 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Following its second season premiere earlier this month, HBO has given the green light to a third season of its Dwayne Johnson-led comedy series "Ballers".

Looking at the whirlwind lifestyles and real-life problems of former and current football players, Johnson plays an ex-superstar who has reinvented himself as a financial manager for today's players in sun-soaked Miami.

Stephen Levinson created the series which scored an average 9.1 million viewers in gross audience over its first season - HBO's biggest half-hour in six years.

Much of the cast from the second season will likely return. Rob Corddry, John David Washington, Omar Benson Miller, Donovan Carter, Troy Garity, Jazmyn Simon, London Brown, Arielle Kebbel, Dule Hill, Richard Schiff and Andy Garcia also star.

Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Ballers’ Renewed for Season 3 on HBO

28 July 2016 9:02 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s comedy “Ballers” has been renewed for a third season at HBO, Variety has confirmed.

Johnson broke the news via his Instagram.

While not necessarily a critical darling, “Ballers” finished out its first season as the network’s most-watched comedy in six years, once viewership from all airings and streaming were tallied. According to HBO, 8.8 million people watched each episode within seven days. The Season 1 finale garnered 1.43 million viewers in Nielsen’s live-plus-same-day count.

In its first two episodes of Season 2, ratings have settled into the 1.3-million range in L+Sd, with a .6 rating in the 18-49 demographic, with 5.7 million having checked out the second season premiere since July 17. While that kind of viewership lift through delayed viewing and streaming could be troublesome for ad-supported networks, since HBO’s business depends on subscribership, when people watch is less important than the mere fact of them watching (and subscribing).

TV Review: ‘Ballers,’ Season 2

12 July 2016 9:35 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The anticipation for a TV series going into its second season isn’t unlike that of an athlete coming out of his rookie year: There’s reasonable expectation of some kind of progression now that enough time has gone by for the kinks to have been worked out. Which makes it all the more disappointing that a show set in the world of pro football, HBO’s “Ballers,” doesn’t seem to have elevated its game in its sophomore outing.

The lingering problem is one that plagues many teams: no matter how good a franchise player is, winning is difficult without at least some strength in the supporting cast. Unfortunately, “Ballers” rests almost entirely on the mountainous shoulders of A-list attraction Dwayne Johnson.

That’s odd considering HBO knows all too well how much power its comedies draw from deep benches, from the ensembles at “Veep” to “Silicon Valley.” The last comedy “Ballers” creator Stephen Levinson parked »

When Lin-Manuel Miranda made his entrance during the opening number of his history-making musical Hamilton on Saturday night, he received a one-minute standing ovation, with applause so loud it nearly brought the house down. This wasn't just any performance for the 36-year-old actor, who also penned the show's music, lyrics and book. It was his last in the title role of Alexander Hamilton. Miranda left the production - as did original cast members Leslie Odom, Jr., Phillipa Soo and Ariana DeBose - after being with the musical since its off-Broadway run at New York's Public Theater last winter. Ballers Season 2 Trailer Sees Dwayne Johnson Go Up Against Andy Garcia

3 June 2016 2:03 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Andy Garcia is the hot new player in town in today’s all-new trailer for Ballers season 2 – and doesn’t Spencer Strasmore know all about it.

That is, of course, Dwayne Johnson, the charismatic and sharp-suited ex-footballer who is poised to return to the sun-kissed streets of Miami in little over a month’s time. But there’s drama afoot, much of which emanates from Garcia’s seasoned sports agent, who looks set to put Johnson and Rob Corrdry in check: “I’ve been doing this for 20 years and what, you guys have been doing this for 20 minutes?” Ouch.

And so, Ballers season 2 looks set to tee up a sporting underdog story, replete with all of the flashy editing, beautiful scenery and hard partying that ensures the spirit of Entourage is still very much alive in HBO’s Johnson-led drama. Get ready for the sparks to fly.

Dwayne Johnson Brings His “A” Game In Latest Teaser For Ballers Season 2

25 April 2016 11:42 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Thanks to an almost overwhelming pent-up demand and a certain Red Priestess, Game of Thrones is irrefutably the talk of the town after last night’s season 6 premiere – but there’s another HBO drama returning to the small screen in 2016, and it’s about as far removed from dragons and fair maidens as you can get.

Yes, Dwayne Johnson’s sharp-suited Spencer Strasmore is prepping for a return to the sun-kissed streets of Miami with Ballers season 2, and a new teaser released today drums up excitement for the show’s sophomore bow on July 17.

Much to the surprise of no one, Johnson simply oozes charisma in the clip above, and the actor’s star power is part of the reason Ballers season 1 became such a runaway success – the inaugural run stands as HBO’s most-watched half-hour show since 2009. Film Review: ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’

12 April 2016 5:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After all the other long-deferred sequels that have come and gone this year (“Zoolander 2,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Snore of Destiny” or whatever), “Barbershop: The Next Cut” can’t help but feel like a model of form, durability and purpose. That’s not bad for what is essentially a serving of warmed-over cinematic comfort food — then again, comfort may be the wrong word in light of all the violence erupting outside this longtime Chicago neighborhood hangout, the bullets flying almost as quickly as the ever-spirited verbal volleys hurled by Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and a fresh cast of coed cutters and stylists. Blending real-world topicality and battle-of-the-sexes playfulness in a way that may remind some of Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq,” but in a much more familiar and crowd-pleasing franchise mold, this overly earnest but not-unwelcome third entry should land in the same double-digit domestic B. »

Will 'The Jungle Book' Be Another Big Box Office Win for Disney?

12 April 2016 9:53 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Batman v Superman's two-week run atop the box office came to an end last weekend as Universal's new comedy The Boss just barely beat it with $23.5 million. Unfortunately for The Boss, its reign looks to be quite short, with three newcomers hitting theaters this Friday, including Disney's highly-anticipated The Jungle Book, Warner Bros.' Barbershop: The Next Cut and Lionsgate's Criminal. According to the predictions from ToddMThatcher.com, The Jungle Book is looking to run away with a huge opening weekend win.

The Jungle Book is eyeing a debut of $74.6 million, as Barbershop: The Next Cut debuts in second with $23.1 million. Both The Boss ($13.5 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($11.1 million) will likely drop to third and fourth place, respectively, with Criminal rounding out the top 5 with $9.3 million. The Jungle Book has a huge edge over its competitors in terms of theater count and critical acclaim.

Ballers Season 2 Trailer Pits Dwayne Johnson’s Sports Icon Against A New Big Bad

Dwayne Johnson’s former sports star is up against it in the first trailer for HBO’s Ballers season 2 – and not because he’s mistaken for Vin Diesel.

“You’re no one until you have enemies,” reads the show’s tagline, and Johnson’s magnetic Miami Dolphins star-turned-financial manager Spencer Strasmore learns a thing or two about his new nemesis in today’s first peek. Yes, there’s a storm brewing over HBO’s record-breaking sports drama, and Johnson and his old confidant Joe (Rob Corddry) are caught smack bang in the middle.

Given that HBO is yet to nail down a concrete premiere date for season 2, the sizzle reel is a mere one minute in length.
