Rules are made to be broken. At least, so learns Blayne Weaver‘s Tyler in the multi-hyphenate’s latest production, 6 Month Rule. Weaver stars in the new film (which he also wrote and directed) about an unattached heartbreaker who lives by a complex set of rules when it comes to his dating life – the purpose of all them is to keep Tyler unattached (and thus, un-hurt). The rules work for Tyler, but they’re about to be bent (or even broken) when he meets Natalie Morales‘s stunning Sophie, a free spirit that doesn’t give a damn about those rules. If you think you’ve heard this story before, you probably haven’t, as Weaver continues to exhibit a real knack for crafting characters that are believable and well-rounded (even if the audience wants to shake them into some sense) and swirling them up in situations that cleverly subvert rom-com tropes. It's 2040 and North Americans are a cheap labour pool for wealthy Asian markets. A Chinese documentary show focuses on the 'ghosts' (Cantonese slang for white people) unlucky enough to have been born into the slums of Toronto
Sci-Fi London kept the best for last. As soon as the title sequence began (by Beehive Design) I knew I was in for a treat. Ghosts With Shit Jobs, from auteur Jim Munroe – a groundbreaking creator of "indie culture alternatives" – was sheer delight.
Munroe writes graphic novels and comics (he has been compared to Philip K Dick) and makes video games and movies. His working method puts him at the cutting edge of science fiction multimedia: Ghosts With Shit Jobs had several directors, all collaborators worked for free, filming took two months and as the favours rolled in it took another three years to complete the film.
While media industry power dissipates, Munroe »

There are a lot of fathers who birthed Father’s Day, the first collaboration between U.S. exploitation production company/distributor Troma Entertainment and Canadian filmmaking collective Astron-6, of which there are five members: Adam Brooks, Jeremy Gillespie, Conor Sweeney, Matt Kennedy and Steven Kostanski. And, yes, Lloyd Kaufman makes an amusing cameo in the film.
Overall, it’s a good marriage as Astron-6 knows precisely what to deliver to keep Troma audiences happy: Over-the-top gore, maniacal and non-sensical plot twists, bad jokes, lots of naked women and, especially, extreme mutilation of male genitals. One particular extended scene of self-mutilation of one character’s organ towards the end of the film crosses over from being a quick, gross-out gag to a “We dare you to watch this through to the end” act of visual sadism towards the audience.
All of the Astron-6 members pull down double, triple and sometimes quadruple »

It seemed a natural fit scheduling a DVD release the same week as Wrestlemania for a movie designed like a pro wrestling PPV about monsters stepping into the ring to fight each other with a cast that includes several well-known names from the world of pro wrestling. Unfortunately, that March release date just marched all the way back to the summer.
For those of you like me that have been look forward to seeing Cyclops, Mummy, Lady Vampire, Zombie Man, Witch Bitch, Swamp Gut, Werewolf, and Frankenstein duke it alongside the likes of Dave Foley, Kevin Nash, and “Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart, I’m afraid we’re going to have to wait just a little bit longer. Imagine Entertainment has pushed back the originally announced March 27th DVD and Blu-ray release of Jesse T. Cook’s Monster Brawl to June 12th.

The Anchor Bay Entertainment re-release of director Henry Selick's 2001 live-action/stop-motion comedy feature "Monkeybone", based on Kaja Blackley's graphic novel "Dark Town", will be available on DVD, January 31, 2012.
"Monkeybone" stars Brendan Fraser, Bridget Fonda, and Whoopi Goldberg with uncredited performances by Thomas Haden Church, Rose McGowan, David Foley, Giancarlo Esposito, Megan Mullally and Chris Kattan :
"...'Stu Miley' (Fraser) is a disillusioned cartoonist whose comic strip features a rascal monkey named 'Monkeybone'. Stu is also in love with sleep institute worker 'Dr. Julie McElroy' (Fonda), who helped him deal with his terrible nightmares by changing his drawing hand.
"One night, Stu crashes his car after accidentally activating an inflatable Monkeybone toy and falls into a coma.
"His spirit ends up in 'Down Town', a limbo-like carnival landscape populated by human beings, mythical creatures and figments of people's imaginations..."

Somewhere in the middle of all of the holiday madness of 2011, The Foywonder reported that Monster Brawl (review here) would be hitting DVD in March of this year. As a quick follow-up to that tasty nugget of news, the official artwork has come our way! Dig it!
Jesse T. Cook’s comically horrific take on monstermania boasts familiar wrestling personalities like “Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart, Kevin Nash, Robert Maillet (aka Kurrgan), and mixed martial arts referee Herb Dean as well as comedian Dave Foley and the unmistakable voice of Lance Henriksen as the show’s narrator.
But mostly it’s about eight very familiar monster archetypes (Cyclops, Mummy, Lady Vampire, Zombie Man, Witch Bitch, Swamp Gut, Werewolf, Frankenstein) settling their scores in the squared circle.
Now word on the extras yet. Look for the flick on DVD and Blu-ray on March 27 DVD ($27.97) and Blu-ray ($29.97).
