Comic-Con 2016: Biggest Hits and Misses From the TV Panels

The dust has settled from Comic-Con 2016, and while Warner Bros. and Marvel’s film divisions wowed the crowd with sneak peeks at the likes of “Wonder Woman,” “Justice League,” “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” the weekend was dominated by TV, with a cavalcade of shows dropping major news (like announcing the final seasons of “Teen Wolf,” “The Vampire Diaries” and “Bates Motel”) and epic trailers. Variety was on the ground in San Diego to tally up the biggest hits and most disappointing misses from the convention.

Fans may have been outraged by the cliffhanger ending that closed Season 6 — which saw Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan beat one of the show’s main characters to death, but chose to hide who the victim was — but that didn’t stop the show from receiving an ecstatic response at Comic-Con. Aladdin will be making his way to Storybrooke this fall!

The cast of ABC's Once Upon A Time took to the San Diego Comic Con to tease what's to come on Once Upon A Time Season 6. 

The main thing to take away from the panel was the debut of Aladdin. 

Aladdin will be played by Deniz Akdeniz. With Aladdin in the mix, Jafar will be a huge part of the season. 

He will be played by Oded Fehr. If you recall, Naveen Andrews played the character on Once Upon A Time In Wonderland

Galavant's Karen David has also been tapped to play Princess Jasmine.

Hours after the ABC series revealed at its San Diego Comic-Con panel that it’s introducing the characters of Aladdin and Jafar (to be played by Deniz Akdeniz and Covert Affairs favorite Oded Fehr), TVLine has learned that Galavant star Karen David has been cast as Jasmine.

Akdeniz and Fehr make their debut in the Season 6 opener (airing Sunday, Sept. 25), while TVLine hears that David will first be seen in Episode 4.

Once Upon a Time” is going on a magic carpet ride.

Executive producers Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz revealed a three-minute sneak preview of Season 6 at Comic-Con on Saturday, which teased the story of Aladdin and his rivalry with Jafar.

Covert Affairs” star Oded Fehr has been cast in the role of Jafar, while Deniz Akdeniz (“South Beach”) will play Aladdin. They join previously announced new season six cast members Giles Matthey as Morpheus and Craig Horner as the Count of Monte Cristo.

Galavant” star Karen David will play the role of Princess Jasmine.

The characters first appeared in the 1992 film “Aladdin,” and are just the latest from the Disney archive to be folded into the hit ABC show.

At the panel, the producers and cast talked about what’s ahead for Regina (Lana Parilla), now that she’s been separated from the Evil Queen.
