From VHS to VOD #1

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.

Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

But as Oscar the Grouch used to sing, we love trash — anything dirty or dingy or dusty. Here are a dozen shows that didn't make our "100 Greatest TV Shows" list but damn,

At TCA, Schedules Take a Back Seat to Brand-Building

Curation, curation, curation. That was the message coming out of the major networks last week as they pitched their wares to journos at the Television Critics Assn. summer press tour.

Networks are responding to the sea changes in viewing habits and the ever-increasing volume of original programming offered across the dial by focusing on bulletproof branding. In a crowded landscape where on-demand viewing is growing, networks are scrambling harder than ever to find new shows with built-in audience awareness.

That’s why HBO is reviving its off-kilter Lisa Kudrow comedy “The Comeback” in November. The series was a one-season wonder for the pay cabler back in 2005, but its renown has endured among comedy aficionados, making the limited-run revival a can’t-miss proposition no matter where the show winds up on the schedule.

The networks need self-starting shows that prod viewers to hunt them down by setting the DVR or searching VOD and streaming-platform listings.

Castle season 6 episode 14 review: Dressed To Kill

Review Laura Akers 7 Feb 2014 - 06:39

Castle channels The Devil Wears Prada this week to tell an affecting story about Beckett's mother...

This review contains spoilers.

6.14 Dressed To Kill

This week’s episode was full of surprises, most of them lovely.

The mystery at the centre of the episode took advantage of the success of The Devil Wears Prada to bring us into the fashion world. Because many of us had seen the movie, the writers were able to spare us the explanation of why fashion matters (at least enough to take all the characters but Yumi seriously), and more importantly, they were able to use the aide-leaving-her-apartment-at-the-crack-of-dawn-to-get-her-boss-her-nitpicky-breakfast to communicate a great deal about not only the kind of woman Matilda King is, but to instantly illustrate precisely what the relationship to her subordinates was like—even to the point of making the terrified receptionist seem a touch redundant.
