Directed by: Larry Charles

Cast: Sacha Baron Cohen, Gustaf Hammarsten

Running Time: 1 hr 25 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: July 10, 2009

Click Here to read Nick Allen’s take on Bruno

Plot: Gay Austrian fashionista Brüno has a talk show that gets canceled, so he decides to head to Hollywood to become famous. But he soon realizes it’s much more difficult than he originally thought.

Who’s It For? You’ve got to have an open mind although it doesn’t push the homophobic boundaries as much as I thought. You will squirm if you have troubles watching others squirm. And hopefully it goes without saying, but leave the kids at home.

Expectations: Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is one of my favorite comedies of the last decade. Those are big shoes to fill.

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Sacha Baron Cohen as Brüno: Cohen’s passion is unmatched.

Xavier "Zaytoven" Dotson literally is crafting the sound of the South as we know it right now. Usher, Jagged Edge, Rick Ross, Slim from 112, Yung La — all are on his just-done list, but his biggest clients are the two dudes he's been rocking with for years, Gucci Mane and Oj Da Juiceman.

"When me and Gucci sit down, I make tracks real fast and he can write songs real fast," Zay told us about his friend of almost a decade. Their winning game plan was to just release new music as frequently as possible.

"We felt we could do that faster and more than anybody else," Zay explained. "We put out more music than anybody else has. We felt that what's was gonna separate us from everybody else.

According To Forbes, The Best Way To Make Money In Rap Is To Not Rap

9 July 2009 2:11 PM, PDT | From MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news

Forbes released their annual “Hip-Hop Cash Kings” list, which tracks the richest men in the realm of rap music. The list is based on earnings estimates between June 2008 and June 2009 and takes into account music sales, tour revenue, film work and revenue streams from various business ventures. Jay-z took the top spot, having brought in $35 million in the past year. Looking down the list, the one fact that stands out is how little new music was released by the top artists during that time frame. In fact, among the top 10, only Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem released new albums (at least those that were available stores — Jay-z and 50 Cent have both released free music, for example). In fact, it’s been several years since some of these artists have released albums (André 3000 and Diddy among them).

So how do so many of these guys stay rolling in dough? Diversification.

Madden Brothers, Lonely Island Bring The Fireworks

6 July 2009 12:18 PM, PDT | From MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news

By Jayson Rodriguez

It wasn’t quite Diddy and Ashton Kutcher’s much-hyped White Party, but the Madden Brothers kept plenty of folks dancing during the holiday weekend festivities.

The pair DJ’d the “SoBe Lifewater 4th of July Event” sponsored by Belvedere and hosted by Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer, along with the lovely (loooovely, fellas, trust me) Rashida Jones.

The West Coast was definitely represented well on the playlist, with tracks by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre pumping out of the speakers set up poolside at the Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica. DJ Reflex manned the turntables earlier in the day.

Lil Wayne’s “Got Money” got the buzz going in the later afternoon, as Kevin Connolly, Brittany Snow, Aziz Ansari, Keenan Thompson and Britney Spears’ agent-cum-boyfriend all passed through the party.

Good times, good food — and you didn’t even have to worry about your white outfit getting dirty.

If You're Happy and You Know It: The 13 Best Songs with Handclaps

3 July 2009 4:00 AM, PDT | From Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news

Despite the wide variety of musicians at Bonnaroo this year, there was a commonality I observed at nearly every set, from Snoop Dogg to TV on the Radio to Bon Iver: the prevalence of the handclap. The crowd went wild each time the band gave them a beat they could clap along to, and the musicians seemed to appreciate the response. Why are handclaps so appealing? Maybe it's the sing-alongs we're taught as children, like "B-i-n-g-o" and of course, "If You're Happy and You Know It Clap Your Hands." Maybe it's the interactive nature of making percussion along with the band, or maybe it's the pure joy of keeping the beat. Either way, handclaps have made their way into every genre you can think of, including rap, folk, punk, indie rock, '80s pop and classic rock. Here, our favorite 13 songs with handclaps:

Teary Janet Jackson Steals The Show At BET Awards

29 June 2009 4:06 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Janet Jackson stunned a star-studded audience at the BET Awards on Sunday night, by paying a tearful tribute to her late brother Michael.

Following a ceremony dedicated to the King of Pop, who died suddenly on Thursday, the crowd fell silent as Jackson strode onstage.

She fought back tears as she said, "My entire family wanted to be here tonight, but it was just too painful, so they elected me to be here to speak with you.

"To you Michael was an icon. To us, Michael is family and he will forever live in all of our hearts.

"On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all of your love, and for all your support. We miss him so much."

Jackson's father Joseph was also at the event, and spoke briefly with reporters on the red carpet, telling them, "I wish the world had recognised him when he was living. Right now, he's bigger than ever. But I wish he was here to see all this, to hear all this."

Inside, the starstudded event kicked off with full a reunion of New Edition, including Bobby Brown, to perform a medley of Jackson Five songs.

Ne-Yo and Ciara also paid homage to the pop superstar during the night by performing his songs.

The ceremony was hosted by Jamie Foxx, who honoured Jackson throughout the night by appearing in a number of Jacko-inspired outfits - and even Moonwalked the length of the stage at Hollywood's Shrine Auditorium, to the delight of the celeb-packed crowd that included Sean 'Diddy' Combs, Kanye West and Rihanna.

He closed the event with an emotional duet of Jackson track I'll Be There, with R&B star Ne-Yo.

Foxx was also joined onstage by T-Pain, Snoop Dogg and drummer Travis Barker to perform a spectacular version of his hit Blame it on the Alcohol, which earned Foxx and T-Pain the Best Collaboration award on the night.

Other performers included Soulja Boy Tellem, Lil Wayne, Jay-z and his wife Beyonce, who performed Ava Maria wearing a tutu and tiara - and then picked up the Best Female R&B Award, dedicating it to Michael Jackson, who she called "my hero and my teacher".

Her hit Single Ladies also won her the Video of the Year award.

The O'Jays were honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award, and there were humanitarian awards for Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean, for their charitable work.

Jailed rapper T.I. won the Viewer's Choice award for Live Your Life, his collaboration with Rihanna. His girlfriend Tameka 'Tiny' Cottle picked up the award in his absence and paid tribute to her beau, who's serving a year-long sentence on guns charges.

The main list of BET Award winners is as follows:

Just hours after news broke that Michael Jackson had died of cardiac arrest, several artists — Sheryl Crow, Snoop Dogg, Timbaland and Fat Joe — and two reverends — Al Sharpton and Rev Run — called in to MTV to talk about the singer's life and legacy for the show, "Michael Jackson: A Tribute."

"I knew Michael since the mid-'70s," Al Sharpton recalled. "But we got tight in the '80s because by then James Brown had kind of adopted me as a son, and Michael was a James Brown fanatic. He used to always come to see James Brown ... I remember though, the thing that was kind of spooky to me this afternoon, I remember I got a call in the middle of

Michael Jackson’s Death Shakes The Newsroom

25 June 2009 9:57 PM, PDT | From MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news

It was one of those stories that just started as a bug: “Did you hear that Michael Jackson went to the hospital?”

“I heard from somewhere he was in a coma.”

“Is he dead? I think he’s dead.”

“They’re still reporting he’s in a coma.”

And then we got the confirmation: Michael Jackson, the man who brought the world “Billie Jean” and “Ben” and “Thriller” and “Smooth Criminal” and countless other massive hits in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, had died at the age of 50. Once the story was confirmed, the newsroom exploded. Producers were running down the halls, digging for tapes of his music videos, interviews and Vma appearances. Everybody was frustrated that the interns had just gone home. News teams mobilized in Los Angeles. Our coverage of the “Brüno” premiere was canceled in favor of keeping more people focused on this story. Everybody settled in for a long night.

The Game Faces of Mike Tyson and Snoop Dogg

Everyone looks pretty dumb when they’re playing video games. Stupid, intense faces with tongues sticking out and eyes all crinched up. Thankfully it seems Snoop Dogg and Mike Tyson are not immune to the looking-dumb-while-playing-games rule.

At a recent press event to promote “Fight Night Round 4,” the pair squared off for the good of charity. Tyson got wrecked, apparently and ended up paying out five grand to Snoop’s Youth Football League. Good thing Snoop didn’t steal his tiger.

Death Row Records: Back From The Dead And… Making Comics?

24 June 2009 6:39 AM, PDT | From MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news

Tupac Shakur lived on in the hearts of many after he was shot dead in 1996. Now, the roads might be paved for him to live on in new graphic novels as well. Eminem and Public Enemy are appearing in comics these days, and 50 Cent is looking to them for inspiration, so it might not be so surprising that Death Row Records, bought during bankruptcy in January for $18 million, could become a comics publisher as part of its new multimedia ambitions.

“Our goal is to continually breathe new life into Death Row,” WIDEawake Entertainment Group founder Lara Lavi told Billboard.com.

WIDEawake, who now owns Death Row, plans to launch a new brand extension called Hustle City that will produce books, animated webisodes, games, and even a feature film using the legendary hip-hop label’s properties. At the top of their list is a graphic novel that will include a CD insert of story-related music.

Buzz Aldrin Teams With Snoop Dogg For ‘Rocket Experience’

23 June 2009 8:03 AM, PDT | From MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news

In interviews last week, second man on the moon Buzz Aldrin teased that he was doing a rap video with Snoop Dogg that would be hitting the Web soon. That day is finally here, as “Rocket Experience” premiered last night. The video, directed by “Terminator: Salvation” helmer McG, shows the 79-year-old astronaut recording the track in the studio with Snoop, Talib Kweli and a series of back-up singers. There’s also plenty of footage of space travel mixed in, along with a cameo by Aldrin’s Video Music Award. (The MTV Moonman is actually modeled after an image of Aldrin sticking a flag on the moon in 1969.) The clip celebrates the 40th anniversary of Aldrin’s walk on the moon, but it’s not all fun and games: The song is also available for download, with a portion of the proceeds going to the SpaceShare Foundation.

The idea of Aldrin rapping is pretty funny,

Lollapalooza 2009 Forces The Question: Snoop Dogg Or Lou Reed?

18 June 2009 2:52 PM, PDT | From MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news

Perry Farrell does it to us every year. Yes, his brainchild Lollapalooza is one of the best rock deals for the money every summer, with more than 100 bands playing right on the Chicago lakefront in beautiful Grant Park. But whoever maps out the schedule grid must be a masochist, because this year’s lineup has more than its share of conflicts that are going to force some serious musical Sophie’s choices. I have already begun stewing over the ones that are trying to break my heart.

Friday is not so bad. Yes, I’d like to see White Lies, but I’ll probably choose Jersey punk outfit the Gaslight Anthem. And as much as I’ve always wanted to check out nutso electronic duo Crystal Castles, by evening I’ll probably need to be soothed by the dulcet tones of Fleet Foxes. The headliner spot is an easy one for me,
