Oscar-Nominated Film Series: First 'Pirates of the Caribbean' One of Most Enjoyable Summer Blockbusters of Early 21st Century

29 June 2015 4:13 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, »

"Lucy," "Colombiana" Sequels In Development

26 June 2015 11:26 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Luc Besson's EuropaCorp company is participating in CineEurope this week where they announced their list of upcoming movies.

The big surprise is that sequels to last year's Scarlett Johansson sci-fi thriller "Lucy," and the Zoe Saldana action thriller "Colombiana" are both in development.

A year ago Besson himself was asked "Lucy" sequel prospects to which he replied "I don't see how we can do [a sequel]. It''s not made for that." Looks like someone found a way.

Also on the way are "Shut In" with Naomi Watts, "Nine Lives" with Kevin Spacey, "The Lake" with Sullivan Stapleton, and "Escobar" with Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz which are all due next year. The Dave Bautista-led "Warrior's Gate" and Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne-starring "Valerian" are also due in 2017. »

Lucy 2 And Colombiana 2 Both In The Works

26 June 2015 9:48 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Say what you will about Luc Besson, but the guy knows how to craft a kick-ass action heroine. At CineEurope 2015, his production house EuropaCorp unveiled a packed slate of upcoming films, and included in the roster were a pair of sequels to two of Besson’s most successful female-driven action-thrillers: Lucy and Colombiana. That’s right – despite Scarlett Johansson’s psychokinetic badass ascending past human form at the end of Lucy, and Zoe Saldana’s revenge-minded assassin slaying the man responsible for her parents’ murders, both characters are gearing up for more carnage-heavy adventures.

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that Besson is interested in Lucy 2 and Colombiana 2 – both films were solid performers at the box office (especially Lucy) and starred actresses who are becoming more bankable by the week – Johansson is a proven draw for audiences with Marvel fans in her pocket, while Saldana recently led Guardians of the Galaxy »

'Lucy 2' And 'Colombiana 2' Are In Development

26 June 2015 8:48 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

"I don't see how we can do [a sequel]. It's not made for that,” Luc Besson said last summer about the prospect of a sequel to the surprise smash hit "Lucy." “If I find something good enough, maybe I will, but for now I don't even think about it.” Well, it looks like he's thought about it and something is brewing. At CineEurope 2015, production house EuropaCorp (which Besson heads up) announced their slate of upcoming films, which quietly mentioned that "Lucy 2" was "in development." Here's the roster:  “Shut In” with Naomi Watts (International Release Date February 19, 2016) “Nine Lives” with Kevin Spacey (International Release Date April 29, 2016) “The Lake” with Sullivan Stapleton (International Release date July 15, 2016) “Warrior's Gate” with Dave Bautista (date undetermined output) “The Transporter Legacy” with Ed Skrein (Release date September 9, 2015) “Escobar” with Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz (Released in 2016) »

Almodóvar’s 20th Feature, 'Silencio,' Goes to Sony Pictures Classics

9 June 2015 10:52 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American distribution rights to Pedro Almodóvar’s forthcoming "Silencio," the director's 20th feature and his tenth collaboration with Spc. The film, which stars Adriana Ugarte, Emma Suárez, Daniel Grao, Dario Grandinetti, Inma Cuesta, Michelle Jenner, and recent Cannes juror Rossy de Palma, follows its protagonist Julieta (Ugarte and Suárez) from 1985 to the present, as she deals with the disappearance of her daughter and "struggles to survive on the verge of madness." As the Spanish auteur told Variety in January, the "hard-hitting drama" once again finds him working within "the cinema of women, of great female protagonists," though the material was not quite suited to Almodóvar stalwarts like Penelope Cruz or Antonio Banderas—thus the cast of relative unknowns. "'Silencio' is about destiny, guilt and the unfathomable mystery that leads some people to abandon »

Benicio Del Toro’s ‘Escobar: Paradise Lost’ Set for June 26

8 June 2015 1:08 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Radius has set a June 26 U.S. release of Benicio Del Toro starrer “Escobar: Paradise Lost” in two dozen markets.

The film was originally scheduled to open Jan. 16. “Escobar,” the directorial debut of Italian actor Andrea Di Stefano, combines the true story of Colombia’s drug king Pablo Escobar with a love story between a young Canadian surfer, played by “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson, and Escobar’s niece (Claudia Traisac).

The film received positive notices at Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals. “Escobar” “offers an odd mix of action movie, romantic melodrama and cautionary traveler’s tale, which works better than it should thanks to Del Toro’s fascinating performance and Di Stefano’s assured, muscular helming,” said Variety’s Scott Foundas in his Telluride review.

Escobar died in a shootout in 1993. Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp announced at Cannes that it was developing an Escobar biopic with Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz starring. »

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: South African Drama Among Rare AIDS-Themed Films Shortlisted for an Academy Award

'Yesterday' movie: Leleti Khumalo and Lihle Mvelase. 'Yesterday' movie review: Fantastic central performance in South African AIDS drama To date, nowhere has the AIDS pandemic been felt more strongly than in Sub-Saharan Africa, home to approximately 10 percent of the world's population and two-thirds of the planet's 30-35 million AIDS cases. In the past thirty years, it is estimated that more than 20 million Sub-Saharan Africans have died from complications of the disease.* Even today, drug cocktails that are relatively accessible in other parts of the globe are still beyond the means of the vast majority of Africans. Writer-director Darrell Roodt's South African drama Yesterday is set in this catastrophic scenario. The film depicts the effects of AIDS in the life of a young Zulu woman who contracts HIV from her husband. Although Roodt's narrative maintains its focus on the plight of one particular individual, the (for non-Zulus) quirkily named Yesterday represents millions of other women, »

New Projects: Anne Hathaway to star opposite a giant lizard

14 May 2015 10:11 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

This week’s biggest upcoming project was one so weird that we needed a few days to process it. It has been called Godzilla meets Being John Malkovich and Adaptation (possibly even Lost in Translation for good measure), and if it seems like those two titles don’t add up in anyway whatsoever, you’re not far off.

The movie is Colossal, and THR reports is set to star Anne Hathaway. Hathaway plays a woman returning to her hometown from New York after losing her job. Upon returning home, she discovers that a giant lizard is attacking Tokyo, and she feels strangely connected to the incident via her mind.

Colossal isn’t even some tongue-in-cheek Spike Jonze project but coming from Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), and aiming to be sold at this year’s Cannes Film Festival market. “Colossal is my most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one. »
