His full name is Stephen Weaver Collins. His middle name, Weaver, is a family name on his mother's side. His great-great grandfather was General James B. Weaver, the 1880 Greenback party candidate and the 1892 Populist party candidate for President of the United States. In 1892 General Weaver won 22 electorial votes.

Starred in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). His "7th Heaven" (1996) television series co-star Catherine Hicks, starred in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986).

Reverend Eric Camden, Collins's character on "7th Heaven" (1996), was ranked #11 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" [20 June 2004 issue].

He is a practitioner of Transcendental Meditation.

Said in an interview that he felt very much like an outsider during the filming of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), where he played Commander Will Decker, a feeling that he actually tried to capitalize on in his characterization of Decker.

His wife Faye Grant is an actress. One of her roles was the character 'Rhonda Blake' in the series "The Greatest American Hero" (1981).

Author of two novels, Eye Contact and Double Exposure.

Graduated from Hastings High School, in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. In 2003, he was the guest speaker at the high school graduation.

He is an accomplished guitarist and songwriter.

While attending Amherst College, he was an active member of their (mainly a Capella) choral group, the Zumbyes (Class of 1969). In 1968, on a yearly LP released by the group, he was the featured singer (as Steve Collins) on "California Dreaming". Also in the group at that time, singing bass, was David Eisenhower (Class of 1970). Eisenhower was the grandson of the former President, and soon-to-be son-in-law to the next President, Richard Nixon, who had been Vice-President to his grandfather.
