22 September 2016 6:03 PM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Season 13 of Grey’s Anatomy is already looking pretty unlucky for Alex. In Thursday’s premiere, both his fellow doctors and the police had questions for him about how poor Andrew’s pretty face got so thoroughly rearranged, and neither truthful answers nor lies seemed likely to wash the blood off of Karev’s hands. Is he about to go from the O.R. to big house? Read on and find out…

It can now be said: April Kepner is one tough mother.

In Thursday’s Grey’s Anatomy premiere (full recap here), the new mom once again found herself at odds with ex-mother-in-law Catherine, but this time the Kepinator pushed back. And portrayer Sarah Drew admits that harnessing her alter ego’s inner pit bull was as satisfying for her as it was for April.

“We never got to see April fight back or tell Catherine off for all of that drama that she caused last season,” the actress points out. “I think this was April’s moment to be like, »

Grey's Anatomy's Sarah Drew Teases 'Powerless' April, Baby-Name Mystery

In the wake of her harrowing, near-death delivery, April Kepner is “groggy, recovering and glad to be alive” when we meet up with her in tonight’s Grey’s Anatomy premiere (ABC, 8/7c), Sarah Drew tells TVLine, noting that the episode picks up mere “moments” after last May’s finale. “She’s on pain medication and barely strong enough to even hold her baby. It’s an interesting spot to start the season in. She’s feeling powerless and helpless after doing this incredible thing to bring this little girl into the world.”

The Chew EPs Talk Best Moments (Carla as Rockette! Clinton as Posh Spice!) From First 5 Seasons

Like huevos rancheros dumped into a Vitamix in The Chew‘s “Can You Blend It?” segment, the food-centric ABC talk show should never have been a success. And yet, like the tasty tortilla soup that results from that experiment, it somehow is.

The hour-long cook-and-chat-fest debuted in 2011. Its not-entirely-novel concept: a group of culinary minded co-hosts, including Food Network personalities Mario Batali and Michael Symon, Top Chef finalist Carla Hall and The Dorm Room Diet author Daphne Oz, gather to share recipes and gab with fellow co-host Clinton Kelly (What Not to Wear).

15 Things You Never Knew About Grey's Anatomy

If you're a Grey's Anatomy fan, there's probably not much you don't know about the show. But seeing as we're in the doldrums of Summer, we thought we'd put together some of the lesser-known facts about the medical drama. If you do already know some of these trivia bits, then pat yourself on the back, because we dug deep. The guts and gore you see on screen are not human but are in fact a mix of cow organs, chicken fat, and red jello. Fun! Rob Lowe was offered the role of Dr. Derek Shepherd but turned it down to star in a CBS drama called Dr. Vegas, which was canceled after five episodes. Kevin McKidd (aka Dr. Owen Hunt) is Scottish, and hearing his accent will mess you up. Miranda Bailey was the only role written with a character description ("tiny with blonde curls"), but when Chandra Wilson auditioned for the role, »

Jessica Capshaw, Kevin McKidd Originally Auditioned for Different ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Roles

10 June 2016 2:08 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Arizona Robbins are staples in the world of “Grey’s Anatomy,” but the actors behind the TV characters were almost cast in different roles.

Kevin McKidd and Jessica Capshaw have played Owen and Arizona, respectively, since the fifth season of Shondaland’s hit medical drama, which is heading into its 13th season, but they originally auditioned for different parts.

Capshaw first auditioned for the part of Nurse Rose, a love interest to Patrick Dempsey’s Dr. Derek Shepherd in seasons four and five, who was ultimately portrayed by actress Lauren Stamile.

Jessica Capshaw came in for Nurse Rose,” Shondaland producer Betsy Beers revealed on Friday during her panel at the Atx Television Festival in Austin, Texas. “Jessica came in for Nurse Rose and did a chemistry read with Patrick … we fell in love with Jessica Capshaw.”

Reminding the room of the character, Beers said, “Nurse Rose was a nurse who Derek (Patrick Dempsey) had a brief relationship with and it didn’t really end up going anywhere.” With a laugh, the producer added, “Nurse Rose ended up going to probably another hospital. That’s my guess. She’s probably on like ‘Chicago Med!'”

As for McKidd, he also auditioned for “Grey’s” well before actually joining the show, and Shonda Rhimes brought him back later when she developed the Owen character.

“One of the things that happens a lot in Shondaland is that we meet actors and love them, but they’re just not perfect for that part,” Beers said. “We met Kevin McKidd generally for a couple of different parts for him, until she created the role of Owen.”

Sharing one of her all-time favorite auditions, Beers brought up Katie Lowes, who now plays Quinn on “Scandal.” Beers revealed that she and Rhimes first met Lowes when she auditioned for Shondaland’s short-lived drama “Off the Map,” which aired in 2011.

Katie Lowes, we originally met because she came in for a show called ‘Off the Map.’ She came really, really close. We loved her, but she just didn’t end up being right for the role,” Beers said. “For ‘Scandal,’ Katie Lowes came in to read for the role of Quinn. … We knew it immediately. The network and the studio all agreed we didn’t have to audition anyone else.”

Though the Shondaland team knew that Lowes got the part from the moment she walked in the room, Beers and Rhimes put Lowes through the ringer just a bit.

“We brought her in and she thought she was doing another audition,” Beers recalled. “It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen because you could see all the expressions of death and dying, but backwards, to oh-my-god to oh-my-god to tears and tears to running up to each of us and hugging us and making the slightly unfortunate statement that this was the best thing that ever happened to her — and she just got engaged.”
