If you're a Grey's Anatomy fan, there's probably not much you don't know about the show. But seeing as we're in the doldrums of Summer, we thought we'd put together some of the lesser-known facts about the medical drama. If you do already know some of these trivia bits, then pat yourself on the back, because we dug deep. The guts and gore you see on screen are not human but are in fact a mix of cow organs, chicken fat, and red jello. Fun! Rob Lowe was offered the role of Dr. Derek Shepherd but turned it down to star in a CBS drama called Dr. Vegas, which was canceled after five episodes. Kevin McKidd (aka Dr. Owen Hunt) is Scottish, and hearing his accent will mess you up. Miranda Bailey was the only role written with a character description ("tiny with blonde curls"), but when Chandra Wilson auditioned for the role, »

Four of Grey’s Anatomy‘s finest docs will continue to keep watch over the hospital.
Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens, Jr. (Richard Webber) have inked new contracts with the ABC drama that will keep them in scrubs at least through the upcoming 13th season, TVLine has learned.

It's hard to imagine Jessica Capshaw playing anyone else on Grey's Anatomy other than Dr. Arizona Robbins, but it turns out that wasn't the first role she went after on the long-running series. As Grey's executive producer Betsy Beers revealed on Friday during her panel at the Atx Television Festival in Austin, TX, the actress, who's starred as the lesbian pediatrics surgeon since the fifth season, first auditioned for the role of Nurse Rose, a love interest of Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd in seasons four and five. The role ultimately went to Lauren Stamile. "Jessica Capshaw came in for Nurse Rose," Beers revealed. "Jessica came in for Nurse Rose and did a chemistry read »
Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Arizona Robbins are staples in the world of “Grey’s Anatomy,” but the actors behind the TV characters were almost cast in different roles.
Kevin McKidd and Jessica Capshaw have played Owen and Arizona, respectively, since the fifth season of Shondaland’s hit medical drama, which is heading into its 13th season, but they originally auditioned for different parts.
“Jessica Capshaw came in for Nurse Rose,” Shondaland producer Betsy Beers revealed on Friday during her panel at the Atx Television Festival in Austin, Texas. “Jessica came in for Nurse Rose and did a chemistry read with Patrick … we fell in love with Jessica Capshaw.”
Reminding the room of the character, Beers said, “Nurse Rose was a nurse who Derek (Patrick Dempsey) had a brief relationship with and it didn’t really end up going anywhere.” With a laugh, the producer added, “Nurse Rose ended up going to probably another hospital. That’s my guess. She’s probably on like ‘Chicago Med!'”
As for McKidd, he also auditioned for “Grey’s” well before actually joining the show, and Shonda Rhimes brought him back later when she developed the Owen character.
“One of the things that happens a lot in Shondaland is that we meet actors and love them, but they’re just not perfect for that part,” Beers said. “We met Kevin McKidd generally for a couple of different parts for him, until she created the role of Owen.”
Sharing one of her all-time favorite auditions, Beers brought up Katie Lowes, who now plays Quinn on “Scandal.” Beers revealed that she and Rhimes first met Lowes when she auditioned for Shondaland’s short-lived drama “Off the Map,” which aired in 2011.
“Katie Lowes, we originally met because she came in for a show called ‘Off the Map.’ She came really, really close. We loved her, but she just didn’t end up being right for the role,” Beers said. “For ‘Scandal,’ Katie Lowes came in to read for the role of Quinn. … We knew it immediately. The network and the studio all agreed we didn’t have to audition anyone else.”
Though the Shondaland team knew that Lowes got the part from the moment she walked in the room, Beers and Rhimes put Lowes through the ringer just a bit.
“We brought her in and she thought she was doing another audition,” Beers recalled. “It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen because you could see all the expressions of death and dying, but backwards, to oh-my-god to oh-my-god to tears and tears to running up to each of us and hugging us and making the slightly unfortunate statement that this was the best thing that ever happened to her — and she just got engaged.”

The Grey is staying in Grey’s Anatomy, now that Ellen Pompeo has signed a new deal to continue on as Meredith.
Pompeo’s news — she earns north of $300,000/episode, our sister site Deadline notes — comes weeks after another long-running Grey’s star, Sara Ramirez, announced that she would not be back next season as Callie, choosing instead to take “some welcome time off.”
As previously reported by TVLine, Justin Chambers hinted at nearing a new deal back in March, while Kevin McKidd was optimistic about his future as Owen. Jessica Capshaw settled her own business a year ago, signing »
Nathan seems poised to be Meredith’s first significant post-Derek fling on Grey’s Anatomy. He may even turn out to be something more than a mere fling. But there is one thing that he can and will never, under any circumstances, be: another Derek. Take it from Ellen Pompeo, who plays Shepherd’s widow.
“There will only be one McDreamy ever,” she swears to TVLine. “You know, he’s not replaceable.”
Oh, we know. Viewers do, too. And luckily, so does Grey’s boss Shonda Rhimes. »

For the first time since 2013, ABC’s primetime Thursday lineup this fall will not be entirely furnished by Rhimes’ Shondaland production company. With Scandal on an extended hiatus and not premiering Season 6 until midseason, ABC is comfortably nestling between Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away With Murder the real life-inspired freshman drama Notorious, which stars Piper Perabo (Covert Affairs) and Daniel Sunjata (Graceland) and, more notably, is a Sony Pictures Television/ABC Studios co-production, »
If you're sad about Sara Ramirez departing Grey's Anatomy, imagine how Jessica Capshaw feels. Nearly a week after the news broke that Ramirez would be leaving the show after 10 years, Capshaw addressed the news in a tweet: "Congrats on 10 incredible years! I wish @SaraRamirez the very best & I celebrate what Callie has given to all of us." Ramirez, who has played the role of Dr. Callie Torres on the ABC series since 2006, announced the news in a statement on Thursday, the same day the medical drama's 12th season finale aired. "I'm deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey's Anatomy and ABC, but for now I'm taking some welcome time off. Shonda [Rhimes]'s been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always »

It’s time to give Dancing With the Stars credit where it’s due.
A few months back, as I compiled my gallery of Season 22 odds, I found it difficult to suppress my scoffs as I scrolled through a seemingly dismal lineup of celebrities. From Geraldo Rivera to Doug Flutie, it seemed as though the Season 22 roster was the ABC series’ least impressive yet, resulting in a general feeling of “meh” as the premiere approached.
Now, to be fair, Geraldo had no business stepping even his pinky toe on the ballroom floor, and Doug — though he exhibited great sportsmanship — was »
We may never get to see what the future held for Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins after the latter set aside her custody battle win to show a little kindness to the former in the Grey's Anatomy season 12 finale now that Sara Ramirez has chosen to take off Callie's scrubs for good, but at least we know that things behind the scenes on set between the actors were never as acrimonious as they'd become for their characters. Days after Ramirez stunned fans of the long-running ABC soap by revealing her exit shortly after the season 12 finale finished airing, her co-star Jessica Capshaw is showing the actress nothing but love. And we've got to admit, it's making us miss the good old Calzona days even »
Grey’s Anatomy may have hurled Callie and Arizona into a bitter custody battle as Sara Ramirez was wrapping up her decade-long stint with the ABC drama. But behind the scenes, the departing actress got nothing but love from her longtime leading lady, Jessica Capshaw.
“Congrats on 10 incredible years!” Robbins’ portrayer tweeted to her now-former co-star. “I wish [Sara] the very best, [and] I celebrate what Callie has given to all of us.”

Question: Had Castle not been cancelled, how was the show going to explain Stana Katic’s absence as Kate next season? You previously (and ominously) hinted that none of the options being bandied about were good. —Bobbi

We know: That headline reads as if the news contained in this article is going to be amahzing. But it’s only potentially amahzing. You see, although Happy Endings creator David Caspe and his cast would be delighted to regroup for a revival of their prematurely cancelled ABC sitcom, they’ve yet to receive an offer that they couldn’t refuse.

At General Hospital‘s annual Nurses Ball, “there’s always lots of little surprises,” executive producer Frank Valentini tells TVLine. And, since this year’s variety show is kicking off tomorrow (ABC, 3/2c), he’s revealing what a few of them are. For instance…
The volatile combination of “Elizabeth’s burgeoning feelings for Franco” and the enmity between the formerly-psychotic artist and Liz’s ex, Jason, has an unexpected side effect that Liason fans will love (and JaSam fans will hate). “That conflict,” says the showrunner, “pulls Liz back into Jason’s life and his world.”

Almost exactly one month after Prince’s untimely death, the music legend was honored at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards by longtime friend Madonna.

Following a heartfelt intro from Questlove, the Queen of Pop took center stage atop a purple throne for an emotional, string-supported rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” while a flock of doves took flight on the screen behind her:

She may have dropped the dollar sign from her name, but Kesha‘s performance at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards was still money.

Dressed in a white pantsuit, decorated in glittery images of flowers and broken hearts, the “Tik Tok” songstress was joined by Ben Folds on piano for a surprisingly emotional rendition of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe.” To call it a change of pace for the normally high-energy singer would be a grave understatement.
Arguably The Voice‘s biggest winners to date, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani took the Billboard Music Awards stage on Sunday for a headline-making performance of their romantic duet “Go Ahead and Break My Heart.”

Their outfits may not have been in sync — Shelton wore a conservative plaid jacket, while Stefani rocked a translucent, skin-colored dress — but their voices were in perfect harmony. And that’s what really matters… right?

Dressed in an uncharacteristically modest red trench coat, Spears kicked off her medley with “Work Bitch,” before shedding her modesty for a steamy — and surprisingly bend-y — performance of “Womanizer.” Then it was back to her Crossroads days for that iconic cover of “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” followed by a lesser-known gem, “Breathe on Me.”

Callie’s move to New York City on Grey’s Anatomy wasn’t necessarily supposed to be a permanent one.
At the close of last Thursday’s season finale, Arizona presented her ex-wife with a new custody arrangement and plane tickets so Callie could follow girlfriend Penny to the Big Apple. But star Sara Ramirez’s final scene as a series regular after 10 seasons of playing Dr. Callie Torres wasn’t originally crafted with the intention of being her swan song.
