‘The Sinner’ Finale: Creator on the Masked Captor’s Identity and What Season 2 Could Look Like

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the season finale of “The Sinner.”]

I know you did it for your son,” Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel) tells the man who had imprisoned her for two months, during which he shot her up with heroin and obliterated her true memories. It’s a curiously generous statement for her to make, but it’s not the first time that “The Sinner” has found sympathy and common ground for people’s failings.

USA Network’s summer psychological thriller began with Cora stabbing Frankie Belmont (Eric Todd) to death seemingly without provocation during a day at the beach. It turns out that five years ago at a party, Frankie had tried and failed to revive Cora’s sickly sister Phoebe (Nadia Alexander) with whom he had been intimate. A song that was playing at the time of the tragic accident was the same song that triggered Cora to attack Frankie during that day at the beach.

Jessica Biel on ‘The Sinner’s’ Surprise Success and Season 2 Plans

USA Network’s “The Sinner,” the small-screen adaptation of Petra Hammesfahr’s novel, has become the surprise hit of the summer. The drama has dominated ratings since its debut, taking the No. 1 slot in Live+7 numbers.

Even executive producer and series star Jessica Biel has been taken aback by just how strong a reception the show has seen. “Generally it never occurred to me that we’d have such great ratings,” Biel admits to Variety.

Biel thinks the show’s combination of high-caliber creative team and unique subject matter is what has led to the success. “It felt like something we’d never seen before,” Biel says. “The characters were an absolute dream for a creative and challenging experiment, and with a woman at the front of it all – and kind of an unlikable woman – it seemed like a good challenge and it seemed like something new.”

Inside Emmy Parties With Nicole Kidman, Donald Glover, Elisabeth Moss and More

18 September 2017 6:21 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

TV’s top talent and executives celebrated this year’s Emmy nominees far after the ceremony ended. Emmy darling Sterling K. Brown was caught dashing from party to party with wife and “This Is Us” co-star Ryan Michelle Bathe on his arm. Another popular guy about town was none other than Alex Skarsgard, who brought his mom (all the way from Sweden) as his date to HBO’s popular fete. His onscreen wife, however, was not coy with her date. Nicole Kidman packed on the Pda with her real-life better half Keith Urban before going inside the Pacific Design Center. To much surprise, Sean Spicer received a fair amount of love while spending Emmy night in Hollywood, rubbing elbows with the stars (even after many of them participated, or at least, found joy in his weekly roasting on “Saturday Night Live” this past year). But he wasn’t the only surprise guest during Emmy week.

Stars of the small screen kicked off television’s biggest night with bold fashion statements on the Emmys red carpet.

White seemed to be the standout shade on the red carpet, with “Stranger Things” breakout Millie Bobby Brown, who is nominated for supporting actress in a drama, stunning in a belted gown. “SNL” nominee Kate McKinnon also turned out in a pearly dress, as did chef Sandra Lee and “Man Men” alum and “Feud” actress Kiernan Shipka. Per usual, Sofia Vergara turned heads in a white strapless number.

Red gowns were just as prominent, with “Big Little Lies” nominee Nicole Kidman and Yvonne Strahovski of “Handmaid’s Tale” dazzling in the signature color. Also donning red were Issa Rae, Gina Rodriguez, Edie Falco, and Sonequa Martin.

Heidi Klum effortlessly pulled off a trademark red shade in a slit gown, with “Transparent” nominee Judith Light, Ariel Winter, Jessica Biel rocking bold slits as well. Padma Lakshmi »
