No Good Deed Review

14 September 2014 9:40 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

To begin with, let me say that I applaud the goals of No Good Deed. Our screens are filled with fictional psychos, and more often than not their victims are women who, by demand of the screenplay, are too passive, weak or frightened to fight back against their attacker. This is meant to empower the bad guy, and make us in the audience hate him all the more as we await the hero, usually male, to arrive with gun drawn to save the day. On the surface, No Good Deed wants to lampshade the damsel in distress motif and say that damsels can save themselves. Sadly though, even the most wily and proactive of damsels can’t escape atrocious scripting and pacing.

Now, Idris Elba is a man of such towering gravitas that when he says we’re cancelling the apocalypse, you believe it. He’s also no stranger to playing morally dubious characters, »

Lambasted Elba and Henson Thriller Going Unpunished to Top Domestic Box Office Chart

14 September 2014 12:43 AM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

No Good Deed’ movie going unpunished to top weekend box office? (photo: Idris Elba in ‘No Good Deed’) Apologies for the bad wordplay above, but if Friday estimates are a reliable indicator, No Good Deed should indeed go unpunished to the top of the domestic box office this weekend, September 12-14, 2014. But why "unpunished"? Well, so far the Sam Miller-directed thriller starring four-time Emmy nominee Idris Elba (Luther) and Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) has a downright putrid 10% score and 2.6/10 average among Rotten Tomatoes‘ top critics. Sony Pictures, whose subsidiary ScreenGems is distributing No Good Deed, reportedly opted to skip late Thursday screenings to ensure that the film’s plot twist would be kept under wraps. More likely, however, it was the critics’ derisive remarks that Sony wanted under wraps. For instance: "The final plot twist is about as »

New No Good Deed 2014 Movie Delivered Great Thrills,Heavy Suspense,Drama & More

13 September 2014 8:27 PM, PDT | OnTheFlix | See recent OnTheFlix news »

Screen Gems (Sony) released their new thriller flick, "No Good Deed" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and thought it was terrific, serving up major suspense, thrills, drama and more. It was way better than I thought it would be. It stars: Idris Elba, Taraji P. Henson, Leslie Bibb, Kate del Castillo, and Henry Simmons. In the new flick, psycho character, Collin (Idris Elba), gets out of prison and kills his hot girlfriend (Kate del Castillo) for cheating on him while he was locked up. From there, Collin eventually makes his way to a stranger's house, posing as a guy who just got in an accident and just needs to use the phone to call a tow truck. The stranger's house just happens to belong to a woman named Terri (Taraji P. Henson), and we soon learn that Terri's husband is the guy that Collin's girlfriend cheated with. »

New No Good Deed 2014 Movie Received Mostly Negative Reviews From Major Critics

13 September 2014 1:07 PM, PDT | OnTheFlix | See recent OnTheFlix news »

Screen Gems (Sony) released their new thriller film, "No Good Deed," into theaters this past Thursday, September 11th, and all the reviews are in from the top, major movie critics. It turns out that this film came far from resonating with them as most of them damn near hated it with an overall 27 score out of a possible 100 over at the Metacritic.com site. The movie stars: Idris Elba, Taraji P. Henson, Leslie Bibb, Kate del Castillo and Henry Simmons. We posted blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. Lindsey Bahr from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 50 score, saying: "There's an intriguing premise buried in there that could have resulted in a smart look inside the mind of a malignant narcissist (which, the movie reminds us over and over again, was Jeffrey Dahmer's diagnosis too)." Dennis Harvey from Variety, gave it a 40 score, stating: "Ensuing action is tamely PG-13 in terms of graphic violence. »

Friday Box Office Results: No Good Deed Sinks Dolphin Tale 2

13 September 2014 11:23 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

The new thriller No Good Deed starring Idris ElbaTaraji P. Henson and Leslie Bibb easily topped the Friday box office results and will go on to win the weekend in its debut. Dolphin Tale 2 will swim into second place though come up short of the original's bow. The Drop played strong in limited release, while Marvel's Guardians the Galaxy is poised to cross another milestone.

No Good Deed is exceeding expectations in raking in $8.8 million on Friday from only 2,175 locations. It should power to between $20 and $25 million through Sunday, well beyond the $13.2 million estimated production budget, and simultaneously bring an end to the four-week streak Guardians the Galaxy enjoyed at the top of the weekend box office results.

The Guardians will make their own noise this weekend and officially cross $300 million at the domestic box office on Saturday after adding $2.09 million on Friday. To put that achievement into perspective, »

Film Review: ‘No Good Deed’

12 September 2014 12:33 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Opened in the U.S. and Canada by Sony without press previews, and reportedly shot more than two years ago, this uninspired effort has nonetheless performed above expectations, and is expected to gross as high as $25 million by the end of its Sept. 12 opening weekend.

Colin Evans (Elba) was strongly suspected of guilt in the disappearance and presumed deaths of five young women, but evidence could only be found to convict him on one barroom-brawl manslaughter charge. Five years later he’s up for parole, but when the board reviewing his case denies his release, he violently escapes from the van taking him back to prison. After paying a visit to a former g.f. (Kate del Castillo) who’s understandably not at all pleased to see him, he crashes his stolen car and lands on the suburban Georgia doorstep of Henson’s Terri.

Amazon Lands Leslie Bibb for New Series

11 September 2014 7:08 PM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Amazon has just announced a new member of one of their main pre-production, as it has added Leslie Bibb as a cast member. She will play the title role in Salem Rogers: Model Of The Year 1998 as the former model who finds herself with issues. Salem is kicked out of rehab and now finds herself working back with her former assistant who went the very opposite role in life. Right now the project is in its very early pre-production.

We are excited to hear more about the show. It seems like it will be an interesting one that shows us the not so glam celebrity life. Plus it will just be based on a unique concept that we do not see much of as of late. That could change if this show does go further. But at least Amazon is looking at making a different kind of network for original shows at last. »

Idris Elba Talks No Good Deed, Getting to Play a Bad Guy, the Potential Return of Luther, and More

Screen Gems will release director Sam Miller's (Luther) new thriller No Good Deed tomorrow.  The film stars Idris Elba as an escaped convict with a dangerous past who makes his way into the home of a devoted wife (Taraji P. Henson) and her young children.    As you can tell from the trailer, Elba isn't in his usual good guy mode here.  I recently had a chance to sit down with the actor and we talked about how satisfying it was for him to play someone so evil.  We also talked about the physicality of his scenes with Henson and the possibility of more Luther episodes (along with a movie). Hit the jump to watch my No Good Deed interview with Idris Elba.  The film also stars Leslie BibbKate del Castillo, and Henry Simmons.  No Good Deed opens in theaters on September 12th.
