Party Favors: Seeing Red

18 November 2009 1:51 AM, PST | Quick Stop | See recent Quick Stop news »

Chicago - We’re approaching an entertainment apocalypse as the new four horsemen arrive on the hill: Redbox, Comcast, Marketeers and Spencer Pratt. In a decade, we’re going to be watching puppet shows on network TV and not even Jeff Dunham level puppet shows. But let’s give a run down of trainwrecks that will claim the lives of entertainment business models.

Redbox is a simple concept - a kiosk that allows you to rent a hot new DVD title for a $1 a day. There will be 20,000 of them across the country in grocery stores, drugstores and Wal-marts by the end of the year. They’re a mini-Blockbuster that’s doesn’t required a zit-faced dreamer to run the register. What’s the problem with Redbox? It’s killing to DVD sales market faster than Blockbuster and Netflix. Having Redbox inside Wal-Mart wrecks the impulse buying temptation of the giant sale bin. »

Look Sharp

Today marks the DVD release of the penultimate season of Jag (that's Judge Advocate General, for the uninitiated). For ten seasons, CBS chronicled the impeccably styled David James Elliott, Catherine Bell, Patrick Labyorteaux, John M. Jackson, Karri Turner as they loved, argued, pined, and applied the stipulations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and international law. Canceled in 2005, it is the only television show thus far to have been officially endorsed by the Department of Defense, the United States Navy, and the United States Marine Corps. As a tribute to this fallen hero, we studied the Spring 2010 runways for signs of its influence. Below, some looks from Alexander Wang, Loewe, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Rag & Bone suitable for conducting a court-martial. »

[DVD Review] Army Wives: The Complete Second Season

3 June 2009 9:14 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Bordering dangerously close to soap opera melodrama, Army Wives caters to the patriotic female crowd. Yes, it’s Lifetime, so the more discerning TV audiences need not apply – but for those who feel television doesn’t offer enough pure, red-blooded American nationalism, Army Wives might fit your tastes. In accordance with the Lifetime status quo, the series maintains a fabricated appearance even in its second season, using very little to distinguish itself from similar dramas.

The basic premise of the show sees Roxy (Sally Pressman) moving to a nearby army post after marrying Trevor LeBlanc (Drew Fuller), an enlisted soldier. On the base she finds herself bound to a group of women affectionately known as Army Wives. Claudia Joy Holden (Kim Delaney), Pamela Moran (Brigid Brannagh), Denise Sherwood (Catherine Bell) and honorary “army wife” Roland Burton (Sterling K. Brown), whose wife just returned from a tour in Afghanistan, make up »
