Fiona Apple is gearing up to finally treat us to her first album since 2005’s critical fave Extraordinary Machine, and now we have all the details on the deluxe edition of her release: The Idler Wheel Is Wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More than Ropes Will Ever Do (and yes, that’s the entire album title).
The fourth album of her 16-year career will be coming out June 19 on Clean Slate/Epic Records with the first single, “Every Single Night,” now available digitally on iTunes. Of course, you’ll receive the song immediately if you pre-order the album, which will be available on CD, 180-gram vinyl, digitally, and in a deluxe CD/DVD package that we now have details on.

Update: Annie’s recap is live.
Val’s vodka gut is still in it to win it! On tonight’s Dancing With the Stars, the six remaining couples will dance a style they’ve never done before and compete in a “Trio Challenge” – for which they’ll add an eliminated Pro or Troupe member to the mix. (“I’m just calling them threesomes,” Tom Bergeron tweeted).
I’m sorry to say there will be no hidden gems this week, as I will be on the set Tuesday to interview Tom and Tristan in-person. But as Fiona Apple once asked, “What »

'It's an opportunity to have a performance that will be talked about forever,' band says of taking the Movie Awards stage on June 3.

Given that Fun. are the first musical act announced for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, you'd think they'd be privy to all sorts of insider info on the big show, like potential hosts, nominees, etc. But, you'd be wrong. Turns out, they're just as much in the dark as the rest of us.
"We haven't heard anything. Who's going to be there?" frontman Andrew Ruess laughed. "Jackie Chan? Jon Bon Jovi? They better be there, for sure."
Sadly, we can't vouch for either gentleman's availability on June 3, when the Movie Awards air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. But we can tell you that the guys in Fun. are planning on making the most of their time on stage, »

Fiona Apple has released the first single off her anticipated new album, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. If that looks like the name of a Sufjan Stevens track to you, don't worry: the album title is supposed to be 23 words long.
At first listen, the new track, "Every Single Night," sounds like a willowy and tortured lullaby. "Every single night is a fight with my brain," she chants over the chorus. "I just want to feel everything."
Apple performed the track, along with a few other new songs, during a pair of appearances at the SXSW music festival last month in Austin, TX.
The Idler Wheel, Apple's follow-up to 2005's Extraordinary Machine, will drop on June 19, courtesy of Epic Records. Apple will kick off her 27-date U.S. and Canadian tour on the same day, »

Fiona Apple's new album (deep breath) The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do has been the subject of much excitement and speculation in the past several months. Apple has played a few new songs live that (presumably) are on the record, but this morning she finally gave fans an official taste, posting the song "Every Single Night" on her Soundcloud page. It's a low-key morsel, but delectable just the same, with an enchanting vocal by Apple and lots of subtle touches that »

Fiona Apple has been performing new track "Every Single Night" at many of her tour stops this spring, and now the song is officially available to stream. As previously reported, "Every Single Night" features a refrain of a disturbed war cry, "I just want to feel / everything." Apple's voice is mixed and recorded so close, like fractured and delicate china, her breaths moving over spare plunks and chiming keyboard parts. This is no "single" in the traditional sense, but it carries a lot of weight and personality. Again, the songwriter proves that one of her biggest strengths is her vulnerability. Read »

Take a deep breath, count to ten in Flemish, do whatever it is that you do to center yourself in advance of potentially earth- or at least soul-shattering news, for there is new Fiona Apple music to be heard. Yes, the first single off her wildly anticipated new album, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, is now available for your listening pleasure below; the song in question is "Every Single Night," which is one of the songs that Apple debuted at SXSW back in March. (It was also in heavy rotation throughout the rest of her mini-tour.) And it's a doozy, though in a delicate, faux-playful way that sneaks lines like "I just made a meal for us both to choke on" in alongside the plinking. Anyway, we won't keep you a second »

Record Store Day is our favorite unofficial holiday on HuffPost Culture because, a.) it gives us new music from across the spectrum all on one, glorious day, and b.) turns commercialism into a community-driven gesture. Nice, isn't? Last year, the day raised sales for record stores by 8 percent, while sales for vinyl overall grew 39 percent in 2011. The new vinyl out this year ranges from David Bowie and Paul McCartney to Katy Perry and Sigur Ros -- some have never-released before, some are recent live recordings and others are just good old vinyl versions of existing albums. We've compiled a Spotify playlist of some of our favorite releases to come out of Record Store Day, and also listed the records not on Spotify we're looking forward to getting our hands on. Take a spin below, and let us know what you're looking forward to buying in the comments.

Something old (like Michael Jackson's "Human Nature") and something new Taylor Swift's "Safe & Sound") are all sharing space on People Music Editor Chuck Arnold's playlist. Check out what he has to say about the songs - and click the playlist to hear them on Spotify! "Get Right" by Jennifer Lopez I'm not loving the new J.Lo single "Dance Again," but this James Brown-sampling Jam from '05 - the funkiest thing she's ever done - is still righteous. When The A.V. Club reported back from South By Southwest last month, we described Fiona Apple’s NPR showcase at Stubb’s as “one of the few absolute coups” of the fest. Probably made you jealous, right? Probably got you griping about how music journalists always fawn about SXSW and things you’ll never, ever see? Calm down. According to Pitchfork, Apple is roaming around North America this June and July, expanding on the short run of impossible-to-get-tickets-to dates she ran through in March. Fiona Apple's first album in seven years, The Idler Wheel ... (you can see the whole title here), is shaping up to be one of the year's most slobbered-over records. Information is trickling out slowly, but we now know the release-date (June 26), the tracklist (which you can see below), and what the cover looks like, which is this: Here is the tracklist. Fiona Apple's latest comeback album, the moderately epically titled The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, is not due for another two and a half months, which is maybe not that long of a wait when you consider the seven years since Extraordinary Machine, but is definitely a long wait when you consider that you, and most other humans, want to hear new Fiona music right! now! Unfortunately, Vulture can't really help you out with the new music and/or the forward time travel necessary to hear it, but we can point your attention to Idler Wheel's brand-new cover art and track list. Fiona Apple is, all of a sudden, back in the limelight after a few quiet years. I heartily approve of this, because I still sometimes listen to "Criminal" on repeat when I want to feel "dangerous." (Oh, middle school.) First she had those amazing shows at SXSW — it had been five years since she'd performed outside of L.A. — and now she's getting some well deserved kudos for a kind act she did all the way back in 2000. That was when a then sixteen-year-old Bill Magee met Apple outside of a concert and handed her a letter asking if she would write a sentence or two in support of his high school's gay-straight alliance. Because Fiona Apple is awesome, Magee received this letter via FedEx a few days after the show: And here's the full text of the letter, for those [...] »

More that 2,000 artists performed at the South By Southwest music conference this year. Sadly, I only saw a few dozen, and in bits. (However, more and more I'm led to believe that the 20-minute set is the way to go.) Below, I assign random and unscientific superlatives to some of the bands I saw, including shout-outs to Youth Lagoon, U.S. Royalty, Matthew Dear and Escort. Where are Bruce Springsteen, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and Eminem, Fiona Apple, Mumford & Sons and the other biggest acts? Check out "The 20 Things You Missed at SXSW 2012." Most improved: Sharon Van »
