Jerry Seinfeld: 'Show About Nothing' Tag Is 'Nonsense'

29 August 2016 7:58 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Seinfeld has been long-dubbed a "show about nothing." But co-creator/star Jerry Seinfeld dismissed that label as "nonsense" during a wide-ranging interview for The Hollywood Reporter's "Awards Chatter" podcast. "That was made up by the press," the comedian said, noting the phrase arose after an episode in which George Constanza (Jason Alexander) pitched Jerry, the series' sitcom-within-a-sitcom, with that tagline.

Elsewhere in the podcast, Seinfeld claimed Friends essentially ripped off the formula of his show ("We thought, 'They wanna do our show with better-looking people. That's what they're doing here. »

Watch Exclusive Clip From Leonard Nimoy Documentary ‘For the Love of Spock’

25 August 2016 10:03 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

For Adam Nimoy, the documentary “For the Love of Spock” gave him an opportunity to connect with father Leonard Nimoy in the closing months of his life.

“The minute I suggested it to dad, he was in,” Nimoy recalls in an exclusive clip. “That led me on a journey of self discovery about my relationship with my father.”

The clip includes multiple photos of the two in costume and in real life. The son bears more than a passing resemblance to his father, both physically and vocally.

The film will be released nationwide and on VOD by Gravitas Ventures on Sept. 9 — one day after the official 50th anniversary of the first network broadcast of “Star Trek” — and examines the phenomenon of the character Spock and the man behind the character.

Adam Nimoy began working on the film with his father in late 2014 before he passed away on Feb. 27, 2015. The doc »

A version of this article originally appeared on EW.com.Writer and comedian Billy Domineau has stumbled into viral fame after posting a Seinfeld spec script that imagines how its well-known sitcom characters would have reacted to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The 44-page episode, titled "The Twin Towers," perfectly channels what Domineau sees as the "nihilistic, no-hugging-no-learning nature of the show" by focusing on how the core characters each react selfishly to the national catastrophe: Jerry develops a paranoia about dust, Elaine tries to break up with a survivor she's seeing, George masquerades as a first responder, and Kramer discovers »

There's no curbing this. Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm TV show is finally returning to HBO for a ninth season! We're feeling pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good. David put the show on hiatus after the eighth season in 2011, leaving Curb Your Enthusiasm effectively cancelled.

Back in November, we reported HBO was ready to bring back Curb Your Enthusiasm anytime the Seinfeld co-creator (and inspiration for Jason Alexander's George Costanza) was ready. Last week we heard the star was considering it.  David stars in the sitcom as a semi-fictional version himself. The Curb Your Enthusiasm TV show cast also includes Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, and Susie Essman.

Bryan Cranston Takes Lbj ‘All the Way’: His Journey From Stage to HBO

18 May 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Four minutes into “All the Way,” the actor Bryan Cranston, playing Lyndon B. Johnson, walks into the Oval Office. The camera cuts back and forth between the 36th president’s point of view and a tight shot of his face as he slowly moves through the room, which is filled with the belongings of the recently dead John F. Kennedy. It’s Johnson’s first time entering the room as president. The scene is silent. For a full minute, it’s just Cranston, a camera, and some music. It’s a powerful moment, one that wasn’t in the Broadway version of “All the Way,” which also starred Cranston, and was, like the HBO original movie premiering May 21, written by Robert Schenkkan.

“You’d have a hard time making that work onstage,” says Schenkkan. “It’s a film moment. That’s what I looked to create.”

On this day in pop culture history: ‘Top Gun’ premiered, ‘Seinfeld’ killed Susan

30 years ago today, Navy fighter pilot hotshots Maverick, Iceman, and Goose first flew across big screens around the world. It was on May 16, 1986 that Top Gun opened in theaters. Already well on his way to becoming a household name thanks to 1983’s Risky Business, Tom Cruise became a certified movie star with the release of Top Gun. It was also the first hit for director Tony Scott, who went on to direct other action flicks and thrillers like Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, and Déjà Vu (which reunited him with Top Gun star Val Kilmer) before his death in 2012. Top Gun, a slick, upbeat, Reagan-era ode to masculinity, boasted a memorable soundtrack (with Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” and Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone”), impressive dogfights, an endlessly quotable though often goofy script, and, upon its release, immediate box office success. It became the highest grossing movie of 1986. Also on this day, »
