Writer Found For ‘Men In Black 3′

30 October 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in April we reported on news from the Sony ShoWest presentation that the studio was developing a script for a third Men in Black movie, something which built on the rumors from over a year ago that franchise stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were interested in suiting up for some alien escapades once more. Fast forward to now and an update has come out that Men In Black 3 has found its writer in the form of Tropic Thunder screenwriter, Etan Cohen (not to be confused with one half of the famous Coen brothers, Ethan).

Variety is reporting that Columbia Pictures (which Sony owns) has tapped Cohen to pen the script, but beyond that no deals have been made for either Smith or Jones to reprise their roles. Although I’d be very surprised if the studio didn’t have talks going on with the two stars »

Tropic Thunder’s Cohen Hired to Write Men in Black 3

29 October 2009 6:08 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Sony isn't kidding about Men in Black 3. Even in a sea of uncertainty, including the fact that stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, as well as director Barry Sonnenfeld, all have not been secured for another film, the studio is hiring a writer and looking toward a 2010 start date for the third film in the sci-fi comedy franchise that has grossed just over a billion dollars worldwide with its first two frames. According to THR's Risky Business, Tropic Thunder and Idiocracy co-writer Etan Cohen has been hired to pen a script for the upcoming threequel. The THR report states that Cohen is already deep into his draft, which according to them signifies that Sony intends to continue the franchise's top-tier status. And why wouldn't they? The first two Men in Black films, quality aside, were major breadwinners in 1997 and 2002. And we can be sure that there's plenty more story to be told in the world of »

Tropic Thunder's Etan Cohen Writing Men in Black 3 for Sony

29 October 2009 5:00 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

This is also official confirmation that Sony is moving forward on making Men in Black 3, eyeing a start date in 2010 that "could go as soon as the spring." THR's Risky Biz Blog reports that Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen has been hired to write the script. Word is that Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first two, might be back. Thought they're unsure whether Will Smith will return or not, even though the buzz is that he's apparently interested and doesn't have another "go" movie lined up anyway. I'd hope they don't decide to make this without him, as it just wouldn't be the same. Tommy Lee Jones' involvement is also uncertain. Ed Solomon wrote the script for the first Men in Black, which hit in 1997, and Robert Gordon and Barry Fanaro wrote the second, which hit in 2002. Combined, those two earned around $1.1 billion worldwide. Apparently Etan »

It’S Garry Shandling’S Show The Complete Series DVD Review

29 October 2009 12:40 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Gary Shandling: 2 for 2. Two TV shows, two masterpieces. But where more people are familiar with his later Larry Sanders Show, It’s Gary Shandling’s Show has not received the same posthumous praise or attention, partly because it was a Showtime show in the mid to late 80’s, and then began playing on the just-starting Fox network. The show aired for four seasons, and then was out. And to be fair, it ran out of steam, but when it was on, it was one of the most dazzling formalist TV shows to ever air. My review after the jump.

The premise is that Gary Shandling plays himself, and has a platonic female best friend in Nancy (Molly Cheek) and a married best friend in Pete Schumacher (Michael Tucci). Pete’s wife Jackie (Bernadette Birket) eventually gives birth to a second child, who gets named by the audience, and they have »

DVD Review: Beautiful Series Set For ‘It’s Garry Shandling’s Show’

27 October 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – A lot of classic TV comedies are often pointed to as being “ahead of their time”. The quirky, weird, and memorable “It’s Garry Shandling Show” wasn’t really ahead of its time because there’s nothing quite like it on the air. The groundbreaking cult classic is now available in a gorgeous 16-disc set from Shout Factory and it’s just what Shandling fans deserve.

DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0

Between his stint as the heir apparent to Johnny Carson (Shandling guest hosted “The Tonight Show” an incredible number of times) and the pioneering television he would do on one of the best sitcoms of all time, “The Larry Sanders Show,” there was “It’s Garry Shandling Show,” which ran for 72 episodes from 1986 to 1990. The program was the first ever broadcast on Showtime and would later be rerun and more widely seen on Fox.

Showtime had given Shandling and his co-writer »

The box office weekend ahead - “Pelham 1 2 3” opens with “Imagine That”

12 June 2009 | Upcoming-Movies.com | See recent Upcoming-Movies.com news »

Columbia Pictures unspools “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” into 3,074 venues with a strong cast including Denzel Washington, John Travolta, James Gandolfini and John Turturro. The revamp of the 1974 classic titled “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three,” goes against Paramount’s family comedy “Imagine That” which Karey Kirkpatrick (“Over the Hedge”) helms from the writing by Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson. Opening in 3,008 locations, “Imagine That” stars Eddie Murphy, Thomas Haden Church, Martin Sheen, Nicole Ari Parker, Vanessa Williams, Bobb’e J. Thompson, James Patrick Stuart, Ronny Cox, Larramie Doc Shaw and DeRay Davis. Current number one “The Hangover” starring Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Rachael Harris, Ken Jeong and Heather Graham should keep on tracking well in its sophomore weekend at play after opening last weekend with a strong $44.9 million take. Film may be the revitalization of Graham’s career which has gone stale of late. »

Tobey Maguire Leaving Spider-Man Behind For ‘Tokyo?’

2 June 2009 4:10 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Scared you there for a second, didn’t I?

Don’t worry, Tobey Maguire is still signed-on to reprise his role as Spider-Man for the fourth and fifth movies in the successful franchise, along with director Sam Raimi. However, Maguire is also set to star in a new romantic comedy called Tokyo Suckerpunch, which is based on the 2000 novel by Isaac Adamson.

According to Tokyo Suckerpunch screenwriter Ed Solomon (Men in Black, Charlie’s Angels), Maguire’s role in the film is so good that it could help the actor move past his role as Spidey. Bold words.

Tokyo Suckerpunch’s story follows a comic book writer who’s obsessed with the life he leads in his stories on the printed page until his real life suddenly turns into an adventure of its own. I just wonder if that adventure will end up being reminiscent to the trials and tribulations of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man… »

Anne Hathaway Joining Tobey Maguire In Tokyo Suckerpunch?

2 June 2009 2:34 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Anne Hathaway seems dead set lately on not being shoved into one genre, getting serious one minute in Rachel Getting Married then going goofy in a musical cameo on Saturday Night Live. And now she's going for action? Ed Solomon, the writer of the upcoming Imagine That, said during interviews for the film that Hathaway will join Tobey Maguire in his next project, an adaptation of the novel Tokyo Suckerpunch. As quoted by SciFi Wire, Solomon said that Hathaway will play the editor of Maguire's character, a guy who writes a graphic novel about himself in Tokyo, then heads off to Japan in search of his ideal woman. "He goes there with his editor, to be played by Anne Hathaway, and ends up it's a love story about him and Anne Hathaway, basically, and it's really about a guy figuring out what matters to him." Tobey Maguire is developing a serious taste for swinging around major world cities while dealing with n'er-do-wells and generally getting the girl. Next stop is Tokyo, with long-germinating project Tokyo Suckerpunch gettting a burst of impetus and a co-star to boot in the shapely form of Anne Hathaway. According to Ed Solomon, who is adapting Isaac Adamson's novel and also has Men In Black and Charlie's Angels on his resume, Hathaway will play the editor of Maguire's writer, Billy Chaka, who eventually falls for his literary charms. "Billy is a graphic novelist who lives in Cleveland and writes a graphic novel about himself that he sets in Tokyo. Anne Hathaway to Co-Star in Tobey Maguire's Tokyo Suckerpunch

1 June 2009 5:18 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Not to be confused with Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch, Tobey Maguire has been developing a project called Tokyo Suckerpunch, based on Isaac Adamson's novel. It was first announced a few years ago, right as Maguire was finishing up Spider-Man 3, but not much has really happened since then. However, SciFi Wire caught up with screenwriter Ed Solomon, who has been attached to the project from the start and has been working on it recently. In addition to talking a bit about the story, Solomon revealed that Anne Hathaway would play the romantic lead opposite Maguire in the movie. First time we've heard her attached to this. The story follows Billy Chaka, a Cleveland resident and author of a manga about a "heightened version of himself." When his manga gets adapted, Billy flies to Japan to attend the premiere, but must contend with not only jarring culture shock but »

Anne Hathaway To Edit, Romance Tobey Maguire in Tokyo Suckerpunch

1 June 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Tobey Maguire is producing and will star in an adaptation of Isaac Adamson's novel Tokyo Suckerpunch. Gary Ross, who worked with Maguire on Seabiscuit and Pleasantville, is set to direct. According to screenwriter Ed Solomon, who was speaking to Sci-Fi Wire, Maguire's love interest is going to be played by Anne Hathaway. Tobey's character is a graphic novelist who gets caught up in noir-tinted misadventure in Japan, while unexpectedly romancing his editor and learning some tough life lessons. More details in the full quote after the break. Here's Solomon's explanation of Tobey's character Billy Chaka, and the basic plot premise for the picture: He's a graphic novelist who lives in Cleveland and writes a graphic novel about himself that he sets in Tokyo. He has a certain fantasia of what Japan is and has a certain fantasia of what a real woman is. Neither exists in reality, but he »
