When Universal Studios made The Mummy back in 1932, it was in the wake of Tut-mania: the fascination with Ancient Egypt following the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb a decade earlier. As Egyptian-inspired symbols and designs began to appear on everything from jewellery to cigarette ads, stories began to circulate that the pharoah's tomb was cursed - and thus The Mummy, about a group of archaeologists who provoke the wrath of a long-dead Imhotep (Boris Karloff, hypnotic as always) emerged.

Jon Favreau will receive the Visual Effects Society’s Ves Lifetime Achievement Award at the 16th Annual Ves Awards on February 13, 2018.
“Jon Favreau has introduced the reinvention of a new style of film that demands visual effects artists to push beyond the boundaries of what can and has been done before,” Ves board chair Mike Chambers said. “He has created exceptionally humanistic stories through his vision, unique approach to storytelling and full embrace of emerging technology to enhance the movie-going experience.

Heads up, Star Wars fans, because this is pretty cool. While we wait for Star Wars: The Last Jedi to hit theaters on December 15, which simply can't come soon enough at this point, we can take a look at these alternative logos that were done by Ralph McQuarrie for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. And they are quite a bit different than what we ultimately ended up with.

Since Disney bought LucasFilm in 2012, excitement around May 4 has been tied to new additions to the Star Wars universe. (This is the third consecutive year that a new film in the franchise has been released.) But there is an even more festive reason to hug the nearest Wookie this “Star Wars Day,” aka “May the Fourth:” the fast approaching 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.
