The Independent Filmmaker Project is expanding its Ifp Film Week to support television, digital, web, Vr and app-based series as part of its 45-project slate, Variety has learned exclusively.

The event, set for Sept. 17-22, is moving after 37 years in Manhattan to Brooklyn.

Ifp Film Week is delving into such exciting new territories this year,” says Ifp executive director Joana Vicente. “In this changing technological landscape, it’s imperative to give voices to those who think outside the box and look to not only film and television, but also web, digital, and Vr platforms to get their stories out there. We’re also thrilled that these voices will belong to more and more women, people of color, and members of the Lgbt community.”

Ifp’s goal is to champion the future of storytelling by connecting artists with essential resources at all stages of development and distribution.

Scott Reviews Richard Linklater’s Waking Life [Arrow Films Blu-ray Review]

13 July 2016 4:12 PM, PDT | CriterionCast | See recent CriterionCast news »

Sure, Waking Life is in some ways Linklater’s metaphysical remake of Slacker, exploding the Gen-x barriers thrown up around that landmark work and bringing it closer to a transcendent plane that he’s trying trying trying to reach, especially in this era, but never quite grasping. That’s what appeals to a lot of us about Linklater’s work, that it’s never quite there. His curiosity has to be bound by the physical demands of cinema. But this, this weird film, shot-on-digital and animated by rotoscope on computers, comes closest. Those formats mean it never really “existed” in any physical space. Produced at the dawn of the 21st century, it’s the perfect summation of a moment in time when thought and curiosity might be enough to carry civilization, when restless unease was the result of an economic boom and not certain doom, when the popular cinema could still be a little wily, »

Looking For (But Never Really Finding) Anna Karina in New York

6 July 2016 6:16 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

All of my fantasies about meeting and talking to Anna Karina have been set in France, at her home, under constant worry of arrest, having just knocked on her door without an invitation. I ask her questions and she answers them all with tears in her eyes: "What was it like to act for Jean-Luc Godard, the man you loved, even when you were fighting like cats and dogs, even when he broke your heart? And how, in God's good name, did you manage to create performances that never age, that show no sign of origin, no influence, that absolutely confound me in the best possible way? How did you do it?” These fantasies found nourishment in the assumption that the icon of the French New Wave was fairly reclusive, not wanting to be bothered, certainly not wanting to talk anymore about those films, that time, that man. Sundance Welcomes an Influx of TV Programming

20 January 2016 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

If this year’s unprecedented influx of TV series and the direction of the entertainment marketplace is any indication, the Sundance Film Festival may end up having to change its name.

After a few years of dabbling in episodic programming, following in the footsteps of fests like SXSW, Sundance is offering a record number of Special Events section series from the biggest names and networks in the business — including Hulu and Warner Bros. Television’s Stephen King miniseries “11.22.63” from exec producers J.J. Abrams and Bridget Carpenter, Netflix’s Chelsea Handler doc series “Chelsea Does,” CNN’s W. Kamau Bell travel series “United Shades of America” and Starz’s drama “The Girlfriend Experience” from exec producer Steven Soderbergh.

For some, like Starz CEO Chris Albrecht, the fest’s timing and his project’s pedigree (“Girlfriend” springs from Soderbergh’s 2009 Sundance-preemed feature of the same name) proved an irresistible match. “When you »
