With so many awesome summer movies headed our way in 2012, it's been a little hard to look to the future without getting lost in the shuffle. Guillermo del Toro has played it smart in keeping mostly quiet on his next project Pacific Rim. Principle photography has wrapped so that Charlie Day can get back to Paddy's Pub and Charlie Hunnam can jump back on his motorcycle, yet we've barely seen any spy pics, or heard any news from the principle cast about their experience.
Today, we get our first real sign that the movie actually exists. The official synopsis. If you had any doubts that this was nothing more than a giant monster movie ode to Godzilla and his ilk, you can squelch that noise right now.
"From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim.

If you’re a fan of Guillermo del Toro’s work, this news should perk your mood. After loads of chatter surrounding the film and it’s production, we’ve finally got an official look at the picture’s plot. Guillermo del Toro has directed some of the finest genre pics to see release over the last decade plus, including the Hellboy films, Pan's Labyrinth, Mimic and Blade II, and given the anticipation surrounding Pacific Rim, another homerun won’t exactly shock. Idris Elba (28 Weeks Later), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Clifton Collins Jr. (The Experiment ) star »

It doesn’t get much worse than a film that has absolutely nothing to say. Filled with loathsome characters in despicable situations carrying out reprehensible actions, there is little to like about or glean from Chadd Harbold‘s Revenge For Jolly!. Led by Brian Petsos (who also wrote the film), many favors must have been pulled together to get a top-shelf cast that includes Elijah Wood, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Kevin Corrigan, Adam Brody, Gillian Jacobs and Garret Dillahunt. Then there is Oscar Isaac trying his best in an aimless co-lead role, an actor coming off Drive and on the precipice of major fame as a lead in the Coens’ next film. Unlike the other actors, who likely spent no more than one day on set, it’s a mystery what attracted such a talent to this wayward project.

Currently filming under the fake name of Still Seas, Pacific Rim is the latest product from the mind of Guillermo Del Toro, a giant monster vs giant robot epic that has me hoping that it will be the next Godzilla. The director is remaining spectacularly tight lipped on the project, which he began working on after leaving The Hobbit, and after his pet project, an adaption of Hp Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness, with James Cameron fell through. Filming is currently taking place for the film, which stars Idris Elba and Clifton Collins Jr., and the first images of the project have leaked of a disaster scene shot in Toronto, made up to look like Tokyo (those Godzilla comparisons are looking more and more apt.) The pictures are courtesy of CBC News, which also has a video tour of the set. These are pretty much are all we've seen of the movie so far, »

CBC News posted a video report that marvels at how a $150 million Hollywood movie transformed Toronto into a "Japanese disaster zone." The production directed by Guillermo del Toro is referred to as Silent Seas and Still Seas in the report, but we know it better as Pacific Rim. We don't see any filming in the video, but it is neat to see the detail of the set design, from the various signage right down to the plastic cherry blossoms tied into the trees. Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, Diego Klattenhoff, and Clifton Collins Jr. star in the movie that pits humans (and their robots) against monsters. Pacific Rim opens on July 12, 2013. Hit the jump to watch the set video and check out a few photos of the disaster zone that a kind reader sent in. Via CBC News: Can't choose my favorite between »

CBC News has just posted this great behind-the-scenes video giving us our first look at Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. A film that will pit giant monsters versus humans in giant robot suits. One such place that an epic battle will surely take place is Tokyo. There will be plenty of destruction, but for this film the the real city won't be used, as Toronto will be disguised to look like Tokyo. With Warner Bros’ The Dark Knight Rises set to rule this summer, the studio is now looking ahead at 2013 and have set a number of dates for some of their big tenpoles. Joining Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel is another sequel to The Hangover, another 300 and – a breath of fresh air – an original Guillermo Del Toro film. [Bom]
First up, launching on May 24th, 2013 will be Todd Phillips‘ The Hangover Part III with the entire main cast set to return, including Mike Tyson. There is no telling what situation Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and gang will get into, but it is said to be even darker and a final end to this trilogy. The film will face off with Universal’s sixth Fast and Furious film. What do you think will take the box office crown?
They’ve also set a date for the 300 follow-up, aptly titled 300: Battle Of Artemisia. »

Essentially the anti-Apatow, director David Gordon Green has found a habit in obtaining the leanest running times possible for his films, and with his 81 minute 2011 film “The Sitter” (squaring off against “Carnage” as one of the shortest of last year) arriving on Blu-Ray today, two deleted scenes are available to watch now.
Green has spoken before regarding the surfeit of quality deleted material from “The Sitter,” and while the results are hardly the discovery of a four-hour cut of “The Tree of Life,” the presence of Sam Rockwell makes them worth a look all the same. Rockwell features prominently in both clips, hosted by Chud and Movieline, showcasing his role as a maniacal drug dealer crossing paths with Jonah Hill's demented babysitting stint, and it is a wise move. Unless Clifton Collins Jr. or Eric Stoltz is up for it, the crazy drug pusher is a cliché best left untouched, »

FilmDistrict has pushed back Taylor Hackford's Parker to January 25th. Based on the mystery novels by Donald Westlake, Parker stars Jason Statham as the eponymous thief, and co-stars Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Wendell Pierce, Clifton Collins Jr., and Michael Chiklis. The movie was originally set to open on October 12th where it would have faced (and probably lost to) the star-studded The Gangster Squad and the Kevin James comedy Here Comes the Boom. January, long treated as a dumping ground for likely flops, has started to yield surprising returns. Modestly-budgeted movies like Contraband, Underworld Awakening, The Devil Inside, and The Grey all performed well at the box office, and Parker has the potential to do the same. Currently, the film's only competition is the breakdancing flick Battle of the Year: The Dream Team (formerly Planet B) starring Josh Holloway, Laz Alonso, and Josh Peck. [Box Office Mojo] »

Update: I've already realized I forgot to add Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly and John Hillcoat's The Wettest County to this list. That would make 27. I haven't yet gotten around to cleaning up "The Contenders" section of the site just yet and while some may argue it's too early to look toward the 2013 Oscars considering we just closed the book on the 2012 Oscar ceremony I have to kindly disagree. If for no other reason, looking at films that might be vying for Best Picture next year we get to sort through a bunch of films that may end up being considered the year's best. What's wrong with that? Granted, as is often the case when looking this far into the future, several of these films may end up being duds. Some may not actually hit theaters in 2012 (though most do have established release dates) and others just might »

"After many months we have finally closed the scoring with Ramin Djawadi - whose scores for Game of Thrones, Prison Break and Iron Man are amongst my favorites in the last few years."
Along with the credits listed above, Ramin Djawadi has also scored recent hits such as Safe House, Fright Night, and the CBS TV series Person of Interest.

Idris Elba has been out and about promoting his presence in the upcoming sequel Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance, and while doing so, he managed to slip in a few encouraging words about his next project, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.
The actor claims that the monsters in the film are quite huge, and while a lot of CGI is being used, true to Guillermo del Toro's form, these giant robots and outer space creatures will be created with practical effects as well.
Here is what Idris Elba had to say about Pacific Rim, trying not to compare it to Godzilla.
"Godzilla would throw out the wrong sort of image, I think. We are talking about some big Mf-ers. There's a lot of actuality in this one because he's created huge sets. I mean, we've taken over four sets in Pinewood in Toronto and built a lot of »
