Deadly Pleasures: Texas Chainsaw 3D

  • DailyDead
Do your thing, cuz!”

Not since Busta Rhymes challenged Michael Myers to a kung fu fight has one moment in a horror movie so signified that a beloved franchise had completely lost its mind. But unlike Halloween: Resurrection, which represents the desperate, pandering death rattle of the Halloween franchise, those four words spoken near the end of 2013’s Texas Chainsaw find the series embracing a lunacy it had left behind for 20 years and attempting to inject new blood into Tobe Hooper’s dynasty. Literally. [Spoilers for Texas Chainsaw follow.]

Though it made a boatload of money upon its January 2013 release (about two and a half times its $20 million budget), Texas Chainsaw—originally called Texas Chainsaw 3D, as it was the first in the series released in the 3D format—is the kind of widely reviled sequel that most horror fans mention in conversations about the worst modern franchise films, standing alongside Jason Goes to Hell

TV Review: ‘Petals on the Wind’

TV Review: ‘Petals on the Wind’
Hitting the air a mere four months after Lifetime scored a ratings bull’s-eye with guilty pleasure literary adaptation “Flowers in the Attic,” sequel “Petals on the Wind” certainly looks and feels like a rush job, but nevertheless improves on its predecessor in nearly every way. Where “Flowers” was airless and po-faced, “Petals” is manic and sudsy, speeding through a treasure trove of sleazy plot twists like CliffsNotes on crack. No one’s going to mistake this for high art, but as enjoyably trashy TV goes, “Petals” is more artful than it needs to be. With less name recognition than “Flowers,” Lifetime could see a dip in the ratings for the Memorial Day premiere, but plans to continue the franchise with two more adaptations should march forward unabashedly.

Picking up 10 years after the surviving Dollanganger children — Cathy (Rose McIver), Christopher (Wyatt Nash) and Carrie (Bailey Buntain) — escaped the attic where

Film Review: ‘Black Nativity’

Film Review: ‘Black Nativity’
A child is born, a family is healed, and a sermon on forgiveness is delivered with sledgehammer subtlety in “Black Nativity,” a bold but clumsy attempt to bring Langston Hughes’ popular musical to life onscreen. You have to admire the earnest, nakedly emotional approach taken by writer-director Kasi Lemmons as she seeks a free-form cinematic equivalent of Hughes’ stage show-cum-worship service — a rousing fusion of pageantry, gospel music and 19th-century folk spirituals that has been a holiday perennial since its first Off Broadway production in 1961. But the film miscalculates by planting this African-American interpretation of the nativity story at the center of an angsty troubled-teen melodrama that, from mean-streets prologue to Christmas Eve climax, simply fails to inspire belief.

Compared with the season’s more attention-grabbing yuletide offerings aimed at black audiences, from Universal’s current hit “The Best Man Holiday” to Lionsgate’s upcoming “A Madea Christmas,” this Fox

David M. Rosenthal Introduces Us To Janie Jones

Janie Jones writer/director David M. Rosenthal

In David M. Rosenthal’s latest feature, Janie Jones, we meet Ethan Brand (Alessandro Nivola), a petulant beer-guzzling indie rocker on the verge of being washed-up who is suddenly confronted with a reality beyond sound checks and publishing issues: he is abruptly introduced to the daughter he birthed 13 years prior, Janie Jones (Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin). The introduction is accompanied by abandonment by Janie’s mother (fellow Oscar nominee Elisabeth Shue), a once groupie who is still hooked on that lifestyle’s accessories: mainly drugs and a bad choice in men. What follows is more than a look into the budding relationship between a father and daughter, we see Ethan recognizing his place in the world a little more clearly and a young girl discovering her talent has great value to many people.

Mr. Rosenthal wrote and directed this film which came out

Exclusive: Danny DeVito Talks The Blood Factory and More

Known for his comedic turns in such features as Romancing the Stone and Throw Momma from the Train (among others) and on television for his roles in "Taxi" and the currently airing "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", it may come as a surprise to some that actor, comedian and Oscar-nominated producer Danny DeVito relishes in cinematic gore with the same vigor as he does laughter.

Speaking with the diminutive-in-size yet statuesque-in-personality DeVito early this March, the sixty-six-year-old actor chatted with Dread regarding his just wrapped Skin Deep, a Splatter Cut short film (as he refers to them) which will serve as the fifteenth entry in his ever-growing library of personally produced and directed horror shorts (which are streamed digitally via his The Blood Factory website.

“I work with John Albo, who has been a friend of mine for many years,” said DeVito of the core creative team behind The Blood Factory.
