Snoop Dogg to Snoop Lion, still not happy, now Snoopzilla

Snoop Lion, formerly Snoop Dogg, has changed his name again. The Dogg Lion is now Snoopzilla, just in time to announce his new album with Dam-Funk, titled “7 Days of Funk.” We guess George Clinton must have made an impression early on. Snoopzilla is pretty much his own planet in own solar system inside his own galaxy. According to Snoopzilla, “"Just call me Snoop, you know, that makes it simple," he tells hotnewhiphop.com, "The thing is for the project, it wasn't a Snoop Dogg project, so I didn't want people to get it confused, that's why. It's a project called 7 Days Of Funk, where me and Dam-Funk we came together and made a group. In the group, the name »

Primal Scream: Bobby Gillespie talks 'More Light,' Kevin Shields, Andy Weatherall and touring while sober

11 October 2013 11:05 AM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

On the heels of releasing the critically-acclaimed "More Light," their first studio album in five years, Primal Scream is poised to take over the west coast with a string of U.S. tour dates.

But first, the band's frontman, Bobby Gillespie, took some time out from eating a delicious curry to chat with Zap2it from his home base in London.

Zap2it: How do you think this new album separates itself from others that you've released in the past?

Bobby Gillespie: I think it separates itself from the last two records because I think it's a very varied album. It's a double album, it's like 69 minutes long, it's got a lot of different styles of music on there. And it's pop, and it's rock and roll, and psychedelic, but it's also kind of experimental too. We stretched the song structures, but still it's a rock record, you know? »

Film Review: ‘Price of Gold’

23 September 2013 12:59 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

German photojournalist Sven Zellner spent four years living among Mongolian nomads, generating a scrappy portrait of half a dozen renegade gold-diggers who’ve abandoned the region’s traditional herding lifestyle in hopes of exploiting precious metals left behind by corporate mining companies with “Price of Gold.” Wrestling dynamite, a defiant old generator and toxic quantities of mercury, these surly outlaw types talk of “freedom” and claiming what’s rightfully theirs in a system that’s stripped the Gobi Desert’s already-limited resources and reduced them to dangerous work for scant rewards. Docu’s one-week run at Gotham’s Maysles Cinema could attract a few other bookings.

Contrary to the more affecting Nat Geo style seen in “The Story of the Weeping Camel,” Zellner’s approach to observing contempo Mongolian hardship remains curiously unsentimental toward the individuals he witnesses, with only the woman who cooks for this ill-behaved gang leaving much of an impression. »

Robin Thicke sues Marvin Gaye heirs, Funkadelic over 'Blurred Lines' controversy

16 August 2013 6:04 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Robin Thicke wants the world to know that "Blurred Lines" is his song. Because of this, Thicke -- along with co-composers Pharrell Williams and Clifford Harris Jr. -- have preemptively sued the heirs of Marvin Gaye and Bridgeport Music, the owner of some compositions by the musical group, Funkadelic.

The basis for this suit (released by The Hollywood Reporter): Both the Gaye heirs and Bridgeport have alleged that "Blurred Lines" incorporates enough from earlier compositions to constitute copyright infringement. Thus, Thicke and the others want the court to declare these allegations false before anyone can sue anyone else for damages.

Just call it a preemptive legal strike.

Filed on Thursday (Aug. 15) by lawyers representing the "Blurred Lines" composers, the suit claims that the big song of summer 2013 does not, in fact, infringe on any copyrights. In the case of the Funkadelic song, "Sexy Ways," the lawsuit denies any true similarities whatsoever. »

Los Angeles (AP) — Robin Thicke is asking a federal judge to determine his song "Blurred Lines" doesn't copy from elements of two other songs. Attorneys for Thicke and the song's collaborators, Pharrell Williams and T.I., filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles on Thursday asking a judge to determine their song does not copy songs composed by Marvin Gaye and George Clinton. The suit states representatives of the owners of copyrights to Gaye's song "Got to Give It Up" and Clinton's song "Sexy Ways" have warned »

Crowdfunding Friday: Rocketmen, web animation and Star Wars

18 July 2013 6:11 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Feature Ryan Lambie 19 Jul 2013 - 06:00

This week's collection of crowdfunding projects includes a rocketman comedy, and a worthy cause with a Star Wars theme...

As well as being a launch pad for original ideas from untested talent, the crowdfunding phenomenon also has an additional, perhaps even more worthwhile service to offer: providing a source of funds for worthy causes.

Our policy of focusing on specifically geek-friendly projects means we can't often cover these in our weekly posts, but one Kickstarter campaign we stumbled on this week managed to be both nerdy and supremely worthwhile: a Star Wars day for the visually impaired and disabled. It's a great idea that we hope does well - and inspires similar events elsewhere in the UK and abroad.

Rocketmen: The Webseries

A comedy web series about the boredom of being a rocket-powered crime fighter rather than the exhilaration, Webster Crowell's Rocketmen looks like a quirky treat. »

Dust Off Your Dreamcast: Indie Shmup ‘Neo Xyx’ Coming in June

12 February 2013 2:48 PM, PST | MTV Multiplayer | See recent MTV Multiplayer news »

By Joseph Leray

Here’s a quirky tidbit for the day: a German indie studio by the name of Ng: Dev. Team is making a bullet-hell shoot-’em-up called “Neo Xyx” for the long-dead Neo Geo and Dreamcast. According to Indie Statik, the game is based on a 1988 shmup called “Truxton,” by Toaplan.

According to Ng:Dev.Team’s listing, “Neo Xyx”’s pixel graphics were specifically designed to evoke the late-80’s heyday of hardcore sci-fi scrolling shooters. The game’s scoring system is based on chaining together series of enemy-dropped medals, and bombs are built by collecting power-ups. Should you survive long enough to face them, there are six sub-bosses guarding each of “Neo Xyx”’s six levels.

The absolute best part about the game, though: when you inevitably pilot your ship into one of the game’s thousands of brightly-hued bullets, it goes up in a puff of »

5 Little-Known Japanese Gaming Gems You Need To Play

Ah, Japan: Land of the geek and once home to the greatest computer game developers the world had ever known. During the mid-late 90′s, the Japanese game industry was an unstoppable Tour-de-force of brilliant innovation, bizarre concepts and all round weirdness. Western games frequently appeared bland in comparison to their crazy eastern counterparts.

Over the past decade, the Japanese market has stagnated and slowly declined. Developers from across Europe and the United States are now churning out games of exceptionally high quality and innovation (yes, we know there’s also a ton of military-minded shooters).

Here’s 5 Japanese games you may have difficulty finding but are definitely worth tracking down.

5. Money Idol Exchanger (Gameboy) (1997)

The title alone screams Japan. Money Idol Exchanger (released as Money Puzzle Exchanger in the U.S) is a cute n’ quirky puzzle game released for the Neo-Geo Arcade back in 1997. The gameplay is similar »
