Ebertfest Honorees Share Memories of Roger Ebert

19 April 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Every year industry heavyweights descend on Champaign, Ill., to pay tribute to Roger Ebert’s lasting legacy in the world of film.

Ebertfest, the annual week-long celebration of all things cinematic, was founded by the late Chicago Sun-Times critic and his wife, Chaz, who presides over the event with fest director Nate Kohn in collaboration with the University of Illinois College of Media.

Such legends as producers Norman Lear and Irwin Winkler; actress Isabelle Huppert; cinematographer Caleb Deschanel; and directors Charles Burnett, Gary Ross and Robert Townsend will be feted by cheering fans at screenings and scholarly panels.

Yet hoopla aside, guests can’t stop talking about another legend: Roger, the man with the big thumbs-up, whose truth goes marching on.

“It was clear how much he loved film,” Lear says. “It’s one thing to criticize, another to criticize out of love. To know his work is to know »

Aquaman screenwriter to pen Universal’s Creature from the Black Lagoon

1 April 2017 1:45 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Universal Pictures’ Classic Monsters shared universe is set to get underway this June with the release of The Mummy, and now it looks like the studio is stepping up development on another instalment, tapping Aquaman screenwriter Will Beall to pen Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The remake of the 1954 classic has been in development for several years at the studio, with The Hunger Games director Gary Ross (son of the original’s co-writer Arthur A. Ross) attached at one point, and previous rumours suggesting that Universal was courting Scarlett Johansson for the female lead. The last we heard about the project was back in August 2015, when Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) came on board to pen a new draft of the screenplay.

The original Creature from the Black Lagoon followed a group of scientists on an expedition to the Amazon, who discover the titular creature – a.k.a. Gill-Man »

Only An “Incredible Story” Could Reunite Matt Damon And Paul Greengrass For Another Jason Bourne Movie

8 March 2017 9:06 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Will Matt Damon ever return to the hidden underworld of CIA conspiracies and double-crossing agents? That largely depends on whether the next Jason Bourne movie comes packing a “pretty incredible story.”

Toronto Sun caught up with the Hollywood veteran recently in anticipation of Chinese epic The Great Wall, and it didn’t take long before the conversation veered toward Paul Greengrass’ blistering action series. After capping off their original trilogy of intellectual thrillers with the rather excellent Ultimatum back in 2007, Damon and Greengrass circled back to the series nine years later to craft Jason Bourne, a solid, if unremarkable franchise revival that garnered mixed reviews and a $415 million box office tally.

And though Universal is reportedly keen to push on with a Jason Bourne sequel, which would technically be the sixth entry in the high-octane juggernaut, Matt Damon seems to be hedging his bets, after telling Toronto Sun that he »

Heist Thriller Widows Casts Liam Neeson

6 March 2017 9:28 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The cast of Steve McQueen’s next creative venture, a heist thriller by the name of Widows, continues to impress.

So far, the writer-director has tapped Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis (Fences), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Rodriguez (The Fate of the Furious), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), and Andre Holland. But the casting spree doesn’t end there, as Variety brings word that Liam Neeson, star of Taken and upcoming thriller The Commuter, has entered negotiations to play the part of Davis’ husband.

Marking McQueen’s first foray behind the lens since collecting the Oscar for 12 Years a Slave, Widows heralds a creative collaboration with Gillian Flynn, the author best known for nervy page-turners in the vein of Gone Girl and Dark Places – two novels that went on to receive big-screen adaptations of their own. She’ll work closely with McQueen to adapt Lynda La Plante’s 1983 crime miniseries, »

Exclusive: Josh Hutcherson Leaves 'The Hunger Games' Behind to Direct His Own Future

22 February 2017 12:00 PM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

"I've never been a goal-oriented person. I never have in my entire life set one goal, I don't think," admits Josh Hutcherson. We're meeting at his publicist's office in West Hollywood and I've just asked if, after spending half a decade playing, promoting and generally being Peeta from The Hunger Games, the 24-year-old wrapped up his time on the franchise with an idea of the next steps he wanted to take in his career. Hutcherson, his dark hair tousled and scruff dusting his square jawline, leans forward as he elaborates, "I think that the idea of a goal means that you're focused on getting there, instead of being in the moment."

While Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemswoth leveraged their franchise clout to land more blockbuster jobs, traversing the galaxy in action-adventure rom-coms or fighting off alien resurgences, Hutcherson took a step back. "It wasn't about, like, proving to people I could do something else, as much as »

Don’t Expect Matt Damon To Have A Large Role In Ocean’s Eight

17 February 2017 11:58 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

By now, you’ve no doubt heard that the latest property in Hollywood to get the female-led treatment is Ocean’s 11. Coming to us from director Gary Ross in the form of Ocean’s Eight, the new spin on the heist story will star an enviable cast made up of Hollywood’s hottest actresses, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson and more. But it won’t only be the ladies who appear on screen.

We’ve head that Matt Damon, who starred in the Ocean’s 11 remake and its two sequels, will show up in some capacity as well. However, if you’re expecting him to have a substantial role in the film, you might be disappointed. That’s because the actor has revealed that it’s really just more of a quick cameo. While speaking to Collider about his new film The Great Wall, which is a bit of a disappointment, »

Ocean’s Eight Crew Quietly Rides Subway In First Image

30 January 2017 3:27 PM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

You’ve got a serious wait in store for you before you’ll actually get to see Ocean’s Eight, which is currently scheduled for summer 2018, but at least you get a pretty cool look at the movie.

You’ll probably have to wait quite a while before you even get further glimpses of the film, because I’m not sure it’s going to hit hard with a marketing window longer than a year, so it makes sense that if you’re going to release an image this early it ought to be a good one.

The crew takes a ride on a subway, and they look as disinterested as any group of insanely competent players about to take on a heist… I guess.

To keep the Ocean’s legend alive, our female cast is a fantastically wild group. All the better to make it seem unlikely that people »

With director Gary ross (The Hunger Games) at the helm, the ultra cool Ocean’s Eleven is getting a gender bending makeover this Summer with Ocean’s 8 which sees Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) attempting to pull off the heist of the century at New York’s star-studded Met Gala. Our first look at this new gang of lady thieves has come our way, and as you can see quite a talented cast has been assembled. From left to right, we have Bullock, Cate Blanchett (Lou), Rihanna (Nine Ball), Mindy Kaling (Amita), Awkwafina (Constance), Helena Boham Carter (Rose), Anne Hathaway (Daphne Kluger0m and Sarah Paulson (Tammy). Now, it remains to be seen if Ocean’s 8 can capture the same ultra cool style as the Steven Soderbergh’s originals, but their spirit will be alive and well with a cameo from Matt Damon, presumably reprising his role as Linus Caldwell. Interstellar Duo Matthew McConaughey And Anne Hathaway Circling New Thriller Serenity

30 January 2017 8:57 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Esteemed British screenwriter and director Steven Knight currently has his hands full with the Tom Hardy-fronted Taboo series, which premiered to relatively strong reviews earlier this month. But Knight is already plotting his next project, and Deadline reports that the writer-director has set sights on Interstellar duo Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway to headline.

It’s called Serenity, a “sexy noir” thriller that sadly doesn’t revolve around a group of interstellar bandits traveling through space in their prized Firefly-class transport ship – sorry, Browncoats. Greg Shapiro (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) and Guy Heeley are attached to produce, and the project is expected to be snapped up at next month’s European Film Market in Berlin.

Plot-wise, little is known about the story that Knight has rustled up, but early morsels suggest that McConaughey will play the part of a “fishing boat captain whose past is about to »

Ocean’s Eight: First Official Cast Photo Gathers Sandra Bullock And The Team

30 January 2017 7:09 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

If there’s one defining trait that underpins the Ocean’s franchise, it’s a suitably suave cast. More than five decades ago, Lewis Milestone gathered a crack team of well-tailored, fiercely intelligent crooks for an old-school heist movie. That tradition continued through Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 remake, one which birthed a trilogy of crime capers headed up George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon and many more well-tailored, fiercely intelligent crooks.

Now, the buck has been passed on to director Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), who has brought together an enviable lineup for his female-fronted spinoff, Ocean’s Eight. Billed as more of a continuation of the Ocean’s series than a full-scale reboot, we now have our first official look at Sandra Bullock and her fellow criminals riding on the New York City subway. She’ll take point as Debbie Ocean, the estranged sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean, »

The summer of 2018 is looking female feisty with the release of the all-female Ocean’s 8 and from the looks of the first image that has just become available we certainly wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of these ladies – that probably explains the lack of any male passengers on the carriage.
