‘We warn each other’: how casting-couch culture endures in Hollywood

17 July 2017 10:59 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Despite A-List actors speaking out, harassment is so rife in the film industry that a manifesto has been launched to stop women being propositioned at auditions. Can it work?

It seems every female actor of a certain status has perched uncomfortably on the casting couch at one time or another. Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, Alison Brie, Susan Sarandon and Emmy Rossum have all recalled creepy come-ons from powerful men that took place early in their careers. In an interview in March, Jane Fonda revealed that she had once been fired “because I wouldn’t sleep with my boss”; Zoe Kazan recently described sexual harassment from a producer: “He’d say, ‘Oh, it’s a joke, ha ha.’ But he was also paying my cheque and then watching me from the monitor as I made out with another actor.” Thandie Newton has a particularly horrifying story about how she was persuaded, »

Hollywood Sexism: The Latest Stories From 11 Female Stars, From Jessica Chastain to Emma Stone

11 July 2017 10:21 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The conversation is changing. With each passing week, more and more female stars have shared their experiences with rampant Hollywood sexism, from horrifying stories about giving “blowjob eyes” at auditions to tales of pay inequality and pushing for more female-led stories. While the sheer scale of the stories is upsetting — it seems like every actress has their own tale to tell — that these stars feel comfortable speaking out on the subject is heartening, one step closer to an industry that doesn’t have this kind of discrimination seemingly baked into its everyday operations.

While there have certainly been misfires along the way — actress and director Elizabeth Banks was recently taken to task for (incorrectly) calling out Steven Spielberg for never directing films with female leads, and “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke compared sexism to racism in an ill-concieved statement to Rolling Stone — the recent uptick in discussion is proof that the, »

2017 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Which New Shows Will Break Through?

10 July 2017 12:02 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

There were few surprises at the 2016 Emmy Awards, with most trophies going to the expected winners. But voters had a few shockers in store: recognizing Tatiana Maslany for her lead role on “Orphan Black” and Rami Malek for his lead role on “Mr. Robot.”

That gives hope that the Academy may continue to embrace even more new, diverse programming when the Emmy nominations are unveiled on July 13. It may have taken four years for “The Americans” to finally break through, but it would be a shock if this year’s crop of worthy freshmen series didn’t get recognized by the Academy.

We’ll find out who’s officially made the cut when nominations are announced on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Pt, but here, Variety breaks down the major contenders in all of the biggest categories.

Emma Stone Reveals Male Co-Stars Took Pay Cut to Ensure Equality: ‘Because They Feel It’s What’s Right’

7 July 2017 6:58 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In an interview with Out Magazine, Oscar winner Emma Stone revealed that multiple male co-stars have taken lower salaries in order to match her own. “In my career so far, I’ve needed my male co-stars to take a pay cut so that I may have parity with them,” she said.

“And that’s something they do for me because they feel it’s what’s right and fair. That’s something that’s also not discussed, necessarily—that our getting equal pay is going to require people to selflessly say, “That’s what’s fair.” If my male co-star, who has a higher quote than me but believes we are equal, takes a pay cut so that I can match him, that changes my quote in the future and changes my life.”

"By now many of you have heard the news, and I’m sad to say it is true," Kim writes. "I will not be returning to Hawaii Five-0 when production starts next week. Though I made myself available to come back, CBS and I weren’t able to agree to terms on a new contract, so I made the difficult choice not to continue."
