First Wave of Berlinale Titles Announced; ‘Flowers of War’ and New Herzog Documentary to Play

19 December 2011 8:59 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Now that the fall “awards festival” circuit is finally at a close — but with Sundance looming in the distance — it’s easy to forget about Biff — the Berlin International Film Festival, that is. (See, I even have to give the name.) This might have something to do with their less-than-huge lineup; in terms of films playing in competition, last year’s biggest art house title was The Turin Horse, while the most mainstream was probably Margin Call. Nothing too slim, but not much compared to Cannes, Venice, or Tiff.

The first round of titles to play this coming February (via Twitch) do carry a few major titles, though. Among them are The Flowers of War (which we were quite ecstatic about), Guy Maddin‘s Keyhole, Extremely Loud…, Kevin Macdonald‘s Bob Marley documentary, and an expansion of Werner Herzog‘s Into the Abyss. A few other foreign titles carry potential, »

Miley Cyrus Goes from Stoner Denial to Boob Job Rejection

15 December 2011 11:44 AM, PST | National Ledger | See recent National Ledger news »

Miley Cyrus fought off accusations she was a stoner with a denial after her birthday party declaration about smoking weed was caught on camera. Now she says she has not had a boob job, answering critics about a recent display of cleavage on the red carpet that had many celebrity observers claiming breast enhancement. For her stoner accusation, Miley, who was caught on camera last year puffing on a bong, said at her birthday party: "You know you're a stoner when friends make you a Bob Marley cake - you know you smoke way too much f***ing weed." But a rep for the star denied it: "The cake was a joke and Miley was being sarcastic. It is being completely taken out of context." Miley simply used her Twitter page for the boob job denial. Speaking about her breasts, the former Hannah Montana star said: "Thank you for the »

Melbourne, Dec 14: Rihanna is the most 'liked' and 'listened to' musicians on Facebook in 2011.

The singer beat Bob Marley and Avril Lavigne to the top spot, sharing the top three with the late reggae artist and pop punk singer.

After 'We Found Love', Katy Perry's 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)' and Lmfao's 'Sexy And I Know It' were the songs most 'listened to' on the social networking site, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Surprisingly, Adele's 'Someone Like You' was only on the 10th most 'listened to' list and the British singer didn't even make it to the top 10 most 'liked' musicians on Facebook.

Bob Marley's Half Brother: I Can Use Reggae Legend's Name

8 December 2011 1:03 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Miami — The half-brother of reggae legend Bob Marley said Thursday he will fight a lawsuit that seeks to stop him from using Marley's name and image without official authorization to promote an annual Miami music festival and other ventures.

Richard Booker, whose mother Cedella Booker was also Marley's, said an internal family dispute should not have escalated into a legal battle. The lawsuit was filed last week on behalf of a Bahamian company that represents Marley's widow, Rita, and nine of the late superstar's children.

"I am heartbroken by what is happening," Booker said. "In defense of this case, I am honoring my brother and our mother, whose memories I cherish each day."

The lawsuit, filed in Miami federal court, asks a judge to stop Booker from using Marley's name, image, lyrics and other intellectual property unless he reaches a licensing agreement to do so with the family company, Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Ltd. »

Bob Marley's Family Feud

Miami -- A feud has erupted within the first family of reggae, with the widow and nine children of Bob Marley suing his half brother to stop use of the Marley name to promote an annual Miami music festival and profit from other businesses in his native Jamaica.

The lawsuit filed Thursday in federal court contends the half brother, businessman Richard Booker, and several affiliated companies are violating copyright and trademark laws by using Marley's name, photographs, lyrics, symbols and other intellectual property without authorization.

The lawsuit says people could be deceived into thinking those uses are officially endorsed by Marley's widow, Rita Marley, and their children. Booker and Bob Marley shared the same mother.

The entities include the Bob Marley Movement of Jah People Inc., which promotes the music festival, a restaurant in Jamaica called Mama Marley's and several businesses with the name Nine Mile – the part of Jamaica »

Olly Murs – In Case You Didn’t Know Review

1 December 2011 2:15 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

“Hello. My name is Olly and I’m from Essex. I was in the sixth series of X Factor only finishing second behind Joe McElderry. Y’know, of Popstar to Operastar fame. He won that And X Factor so this is a guy that knows how to win a popularity contest”. Well if that hasn’t peaked your interest, nothing will.

Olly Murs spent ten whole weeks ramming his repetitive dance moves and Essex-ness down our throats in late 2009. Some called him brave. Some called him stupid. Some called him an unbearable pox on society. But give him some credit. There he was harping on about Essex in his monotonous mockney drone long before that Towie bunch came along and “introduced” us to abbreviated words, fancy vaginas and spray tan.

However, with it being the advent of, well, advent, I’m in a giving mood, so »

African Diaspora International Film Festival 2011

30 November 2011 12:06 PM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

The 19th annual African Diaspora International Film Festival opened in New York on Friday but has only caught my attention today because a modest batch of reviews of what look to be some pretty intriguing documentaries have appeared in the last day or two. The festival runs through December 13.

"In the fleet-footed, engagingly volatile documentary An African Election, the director Jarreth Merz hurls himself into the thick of a political contest defined by high hopes and even higher anxieties," writes Jeannette Catsoulis in the New York Times. "For almost three months in 2008, Mr Merz followed the unsteady progress of the presidential race in Ghana, a country energized by the recent discovery of oil and still reeling from the aftermath of catastrophic floods. To capture the national turmoil, the filmmaker (who grew up in Ghana) assembles a colorful gallery of political insiders, including the candidates — Nana Akufo-Addo of the ruling New Patriotic Party, »
