You have less than two days to donate to this Kickstarter campaign. Why do you keep waiting?
Julia Marchese starts with a simple question:
What would you give to preserve the rich history of cinema?
Then a call to action:
Help us to preserve the cinema stories and experiences from the past century.
Then the very point of the whole thing:
When we lose the rich tapestry of roots, we lose something very important…a vital, life-giving thing.
The whole thing is, of course, a film called Out of Print that aims to be about repertory cinema, about the well-being of our cinematic heritage (the most important cultural artifact and catalog of the last 100 years), and, about, most of all, The New Beverly Cinema here in Los Angeles, California.
And Julia Marchese (you’ve seen her face) has only two days left to raise the rest of the money she »

Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator: The Musical, the stage musical adaptation of his 1985 cult classic film, proved successful enough to make the jump from the small Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood to downtown La's Hayworth Theatre -- complete with its original cast, including George Wendt as Dean Halsey -- where it's now in the midst of a run that ends on June 3rd. And there are two new Re-Animator songs in the show (click on "music"). It will soon appear at the Nymf (New York Musical Theatre Festival) and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe; the only play from La to do so this year. In the tradition of Rocky Horror Picture Show, Re-Animator: The Musical -- which has won "Musical of the Year" from La Weekly »

Lots of folks have tried their hand at visually articulating Lovecraft with varying degrees of success (and if you're not Stuart Gordon, you're skirting flunkdom). But if anyone has a shot at making the lord of literary foreplay's words come to macabre life it's Lovercraft obsessive, noted composer and Fango contributor Mars (Slime City Massacre) with his moody and atmospheric Cthulu creeper, Transcendent.

You could put together a decent-sized horror film festival of movies which feature demented clowns. And then you could trick a busload of people with a morbid fear of circus entertainers into attending the event by saying it was a coulrophobics convention.
But enough about Things I Plan To Do After I Become A Supervillain!!!
Stitches is the latest movie to try and cram facepaint-related macabre-ness into its duration like, well, a lot of clowns attempting to squeeze into a comically small car. Director Conor McMahon’s currently-screening-at Cannes film stars acclaimed British standup comedian Ross Noble as kids’ birthday clown Richard ‘Stitches’ Grindle who, »

Some people regard 3D as the future of cinema. And some think its only useful purpose is to enhance the kind of low budget horror movie in which people say things like, “There’s a twelve foot great white shark in here!” Those of the latter persuasion are unlikely to change their view any after seeing the new red band trailer for the Australian movie Bait 3D, not least because someone actually does say, “There’s a twelve foot great white shark in here!”
Who is responsible for what appears to be a gloriously shlock-tastic fusion of Jaws and The Mist? »

Another week, another Monday. So it’s time for the rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s another packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, May 14th 2012.
Pick(S) Of The Week
The Sitter (DVD/Blu-ray)
When the world’s most irresponsible babysitter takes three of the world’s worst kids on an unforgettable overnight adventure through the streets of New York City, it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to make it home in one piece. Starring Jonah Hill (Knocked Up, Get Him To The Greek) and Sam Rockwell (Moon & The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), The Sitter is a new level of twisted and debauched hilarity from the director of Pineapple Express, David Gordon Green. »

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows
As sure as night follows day, a hit film becomes a franchise. Robert Downey Jr and Guy Ritchie's take on the often-filmed subject plays the titular sleuth as a sort of supernatural mind-reader who favours punching people in slow motion over deductive reasoning. This second outing has almost even less of a right to trade on the Holmes name than the first, but is arguably the better movie – it's still great-looking, slick entertainment.
The supporting cast is more interesting and entertaining too, from Mad Men's Jared Harris's snobbish turn as nemesis Moriarty to Stephen Fry's even more snobbish Mycroft Holmes – who insists on calling his brother "Shirley". It's a more lavish, detailed, camp and fun world.
If you're expecting clever wordplay and thrashing through clues then you're better off with the BBC's Sherlock. This one is all about huge guns and running through exploding forests. »

Stuart Gordon has two ardent -- and wildly different -- fan bases. Most people are probably familiar with Gordon as the writer-director of such low-budget horror classics as "Re-Animator" and "From Beyond," both based on pulpy stories from beloved cult author H.P. Lovecraft. Then there is Gordon the theater artist, a man who founded Chicago's prestigious Organic Theater Company, worked with Joseph Papp at the Public Theater, and helped bring David Mamet to prominence by directing the world premiere of "Sexual Perversity in Chicago." But recently, Gordon says, the two camps have begun to merge. A large amount of credit for the crossover is due to Gordon's latest incarnation of "Re-Animator" -- a bloody good musical set to travel the world.Slightly revised from the critically acclaimed production that played Hollywood's Steve Allen Theatre in 2011, "Re-Animator the Musical" will run at L.A.'s Hayworth Theatre through July 8, then at the. »

In its first full week since its April 24 opening, Nice Work If You Can Get It joined Broadway’s million-dollar club with a gross of $1,022,115, up a whopping 23 percent from the previous week. For the week ending May 6, the “new” Gershwin brothers’ musical starring Matthew Broderick (pictured above) and Kelli O’Hara also had the largest gain of any production on the Great White Way and was the biggest beneficiary of its 10 Tony nominations. It joined five other shows that earned at least $1 million last week: The Lion King, Wicked, The Book of Mormon, Evita, and Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark. »

The 2012 edition of Fantasia will feature the inaugural addition of a Co-Production marketplace, called Frontières (not to be confused with the crazy genre-mash-up from Xavier Gens, but perhaps evoking the spirit of that film.) The very first thing that gets me excited is that their list of 14 titles which features the sequel to Bruce McDonald's Pontypool (which was rumoured in 2009, but things have been silent since then letting me believe that it was not going to happen despite screenplays already written!) Further genre-friendly projects from directors Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator), John Hewitt (Acolytes, X) and Jorge Michel Grau (We Are What We Are) as well as producers Ant Timpson (ABCs of Death) and Jason Eisener (Treevenge, Hobo With A Shotgun) are also indicated in the press »

The theater world was fixated this week on Tuesday’s announcement of the Tony nominations, which should prove a box office boon for much-nominated shows like Once, Newsies, and Peter and the Starcatcher. Of course, the noms also prompted the same-day closing notice of two shows completely overlooked for awards consideration: Magic/Bird and the Teresa Rebeck comedy Seminar. (And vultures are circling other shows, like the new musical Leap of Faith, that received only a smattering of Tony love.)
Looking ahead to next season (and who isn’t?), producers announced a Nov. 18 premiere of Rebecca, a new musical based »

A few years back, film director Stuart Gordon had the thought that his gore-filled 1985 horror movie Re-Animator might be improved with the addition of some songs. It was an odd idea — but an ultimately successful one. In the spring of 2011, Re-Animator: The Musical opened at Hollywood’s Steve Allen Theater to great reviews (Variety hailed it as “an entertainment of rich rewards and high accomplishment”) and tonight the play officially starts a second run at the Hayworth Theatre, prior to engagements at the New York Musical Theatre Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. The H.P. Lovecraft-inspired tale stars Graham Skipper »

If you’re a fan of terrifying theater, you’ve probably heard about Re-animator The Musical. Returning to his incendiary stage roots, Stuart Gordon directed this adaptation of his 1985 classic, resulting in six L.A. Weekly Theater Awards, an Ovation Award and an L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for everything from Best Musical to Best Blood Effects. The show was extended multiple times, running March-August 2011 at the Steve Allen Theatre in Los Angeles; those who missed that run are in luck, as Re-animator The Musical has returned for a 10-week run at La’s Hayworth Theatre starting today before heading to New York in July and Edinburgh after that.
