James Cameron confirms that filming will finally start on his quartet of Avatar sequels this coming Monday...

They’ve been a very, very long time coming, but writer/director James Cameron will finally start filming his four Avatar sequels next week.

A start date of September 25th has been confirmed by Cameron, with the technology required now fully in place, and pre-production complete. The cast for the new films includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang. Avatar 2 is due in cinemas in December 2020, and then the films will come fairly constantly until we get the final planned movie – Avatar 4 – in 2025.

More news on the films as we get it, of course. But it may yet be a bit of a wait…

The sequel to the highest grossing movie of all time has been delayed 3 times after it was initially supposed to hit theaters in December of 2014. Due to the previous delays, many began to speculate if director James Cameron would delay again, but production is really going to start up next week, just 5 days shy of October 1st.

The announcement was made at the special Terminator 2: Judgement Day screening last night by Cameron. The Hollywood Reporter was on hand and Borys Kit's Twitter account shared the news of Cameron's big reveal that Avatar 2 would begin shooting next week. Cameron also dropped another bombshell on the crowd when he announced that Linda Hamilton will be jumping on board the new Terminator reboot along with the already announced Arnold Schwarzenegger. Allan Ungar Back in Action with Decoy

7 September 2017 5:30 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

Director Allan Ungar might have found his next big actioner in Decoy, a project with some compelling star power in Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy), Andy Garcia (The Untouchables) and Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf). Written by David Benullo, the story centers on an identity thief who becomes hunted by the Nsa after he steals the identity of a wanted man. The script was featured on the 2014 Hit List which tracks well-liked, unproduced work. Ungar's last film was the raucous 80s throwback Gridlocked, which channeled the fun of buddy cop films like Lethal Weapon and The Hard Way. That film starred Dominic Purcell, Stephen Lang and Danny Glover and is available on Netflix. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on the film and the fact...

James Cameron says he’s in “full-tilt production” on the Avatar sequels

28 August 2017 4:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Some eight years after the release of Avatar, which took the global box office by storm on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time, James Cameron has now revealed to EW that he’s in “full-tilt production” on the four sequels to the sci-fi blockbuster.

“Oh, we’re in production,” states Cameron. “We’re in full-tilt production. We’re in what we call ‘scouting,’ which basically is shooting for me. I’m on the stage all day long during the scouting process, because there are no sets or locations, other than in the virtual world, so I do all my location-scouting with a troop of actors that go through the virtual sets, and give me a sense of the scale and position, lighting, that sort of thing. Then, I’m in rehearsals with my principal cast and I start with them at the end of September.”

Perched at the tip-top of Hollywood’s box office charts – at $2.78 billion, the James Cameron franchise starter is yet to be beaten – Avatar is a name that is widely known around the film industry, even if it tends to evoke a mixture of groans and adulation.

Truth be told, there are those who believe Cameron’s fantastical sci-fi is the textbook example of an over-achiever, and that Avatar simply rode the wave of 3D surcharges all the way to box office stardom back in 2009. Nevertheless, its historic feat has resulted in the announcement of not one, not two, but four full-blown sequels, beginning with the launch of Avatar 2 in December of 2020. They’re now in “full-tilt” production, according to James Cameron, who attributes the ten-year wait to mapping out the franchise’s overall vision.

10 Things You Should Know About Cable to Make You Psyched He's in Deadpool 2

Josh Brolin has come a long way from The Goonies, Thrashin' and the bad guy of the week opposite Johnny Depp in a killer episode of 21 Jump Street. And right after he's finished throwing a moon at Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Avengers Infinity War, Brolin will step away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to mix it up with Fox's world of merry mutants in Deadpool 2. Hollywood rights issues are keeping X-Men related characters from interacting with the rest of the Marvel Universe onscreen, but that can't stop our favorite actors from crossing over as different characters.

Ryan Reynolds started teasing the cinematic debut of Cable in the post-credits scene attached to Deadpool, the years in development surprise box office smash that took meta-humor and R-Rated anti-hero action comedy violence to previously uncharted heights. Stephen Lang’s Colonel Quaritch is the villain of all four Avatar sequels, Matt Gerald to return

10 August 2017 3:41 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite his apparent demise in Avatar, Stephen Lang is confirmed to be reprising his role for James Cameron’s upcoming sequels, and now Cameron has revealed that he will in fact be the main villain in all four of the new movies.

“The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters,” Cameron tells Empire. “There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherfucker through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park.”

'Avatar' Villain Stephen Lang Returning for All Four Sequels, Says James Cameron

8 August 2017 6:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

James Cameron's Avatar was greatly enlivened by the presence of Stephen Lang (above). Millions of people saw the sci-fi adventure during its theatrical release and/or later on home video, but if you need a reminder, Lang portrayed Colonel Miles Quaritch, the leader of the military force on the planet Pandora. Initially, Colonel Quaritch appears to be tough but fair. Eventually, though, he becomes quite a villainous character, never hesitating to kill anyone he views as a threat to his overall mission. After an epic battle with the heroic Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), he's apparently left for dead. Back in 2013, we heard that Lang had signed up for the three Avatar sequels planned at the time. Cameron said: "His character will evolve into really unexpected places...

Colonel Quaritch Is the Main Villain in Avatar 2 and Its Sequels

8 August 2017 11:46 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Way back in October 2013, director James Cameron confirmed that Stephen Lang will return as Colonel Quaritch in all of his Avatar sequels. At the time, there were only three sequels, but now that there are four movies all moving forward, with production starting on September 25, the director revealed that his plans for Quaritch haven't changed, confirming he will be appearing in Avatar 2 through Avatar 5. Here's what the director had to say, revealing he plans to keep the same characters but introduce them to new settings and creatures.

"The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it's pretty much the same characters. Avatar: Stephen Lang Will Be The Villain In All The Sequels

8 August 2017 9:10 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

No one is truly dead in these big tentpole films. It’s been like that since the beginning of time, and it looks like that trend will at least continue with director James Cameron’s upcoming sequels to his hit 2009 film Avatar. If you’ll recall, the main baddie in that particular flick was Colonel Quartich, played by Stephen Lang, and this guy met his untimely fate when he was shot with a pair of arrows to the chest (if you can call it untimely).

It’s already been revealed that Lang would be returning in the next film, but it sounds like Cameron has plans to bring him back for an extended stay for the Avatar sequels. And, from the sound of it, he won’t be the only one doing so. Speaking with Empire, Cameron discussed that while these films will be venturing off into new and unexpected territory, »

Jake, Neytiri, and the other Na’vi haven’t seen the last of Miles Quaritch.

Eight years ago, Stephen Lang’s bullish colonel terrorized Pandora as the head of Rda’s (Resources Development Administration) private security force, before ultimately ‘dying’ at the hands of Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri. But just as franchise mastermind James Cameron plans to bring back Sigourney Weaver for Avatar 2 and its many sequels, we’re now learning that Lang’s hardboiled military operative will continue to menace Jake (Sam Worthington) and the gang all throughout the Avatar saga. Perhaps Quaritch will be sporting some form of human exoskeleton in a few year’s time? Or will the antagonist go full cyborg in his mission to conquer Pandora?

Either way, ahead of production kicking off this fall, Empire sat down with James Cameron »
