TOKYO -- The Japanese town whose name provided the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Go Go Yubari in "Kill Bill" has been forced to drop the curtain on its 17-year film festival due to a financial crisis. The Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival had its final run in February, city officials confirmed, bringing an end to an event that had attracted some of the top names in film, including Tarantino, South Korean director Yi Chang-ho, French singer Charles Aznavour and legendary "Sound of Music" helmer Robert Wise. "The problem is, that the city has some serious economic problems and we simply could not afford to help support the festival any longer," said Naoki Nagasawa, a spokesman for the Yubari municipal government, on the northern island of Hokkaido. »
