'Law & Order: Svu's' Raul Esparza: 'I have been part of critically acclaimed glories'

21 November 2012 1:00 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Raul Esparza, the latest Ada, Rafael Barba, on NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," has been a Broadway darling for a decade.

He not only escaped unscathed from "Taboo" but came away with one of his four Tony nominations. Considering that musical remains the butt of jokes, it's an indication of his talent. Usually Esparza walks onstage, and the audience starts clapping; once he performs, the reaction is justified.

Then there was "Leap of Faith," a splashy flop earlier this year, from which Esparza is still recovering.

"I have been part of some critically acclaimed glories," Esparza tells Zap2it. "I have been involved in ['Leap of Faith'] for five years and love the music very, very, very much, and the last thing I expected was it to fall apart.

"What Warren did was come in and work with me a little bit," he says of Warren Leight, the "Svu" show runner and »

'Seinfeld': 'The Contest' turns 20 years old - retro-recapping a comedy classic

18 November 2012 9:00 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Sunday (Nov. 18) is the 20th anniversary of the "Seinfeld" episode "The Contest." It's now considered one of the very best episodes of the series -- if not of any sitcom ever. Zap2it -- heck, the web as we know it -- didn't exist then. But if it had, this is how we would have recapped "The Contest" in our first ever Retro Rave. The items in parentheses are little factoids about the episode.

That's it. "Seinfeld" is king of the comedy county, lord of the laugh manor. Truly, the show is master of its domain.

The show has been on an unbelievable run this fall, and it came to a head, so to speak, this week with "The Contest," which has to be about the funniest and certainly the most innuendo-laden take on masturbation in TV history. Where to start?

Who Should Play Kay Scarpetta?

5 November 2012 9:45 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

On Saturday, famed novelist Patricia Cornwell posed a simple question on her official Facebook page, who should play Kay Scarpetta in a feature film about the forensic foodie? 6,000 plus comments later and the fans couldn't have cast a wider net.

There are, of course, the accomplished actresses who are mentioned for every major Hollywood role (Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett) as well as those with passionate online fanbases (Castle's Stana Katic, Law & Order: Svu's Mariska Hargitay). Then, there are the actresses who are best known for playing similar characters (CSI's Marg Helgenberger, Bones' Emily Deschanel, Rizzoli & Isles' Sasha Alexander) as well as some choices that are totally out of left field (Glee's Jane Lynch).

But one thing the fans can agree on is that Kay Scarpetta deserves her own big budget franchise! So, ETonline asks you, who should »

'Law & Order: Svu': Cast members new and old close book on 300th episode

24 October 2012 2:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

In the cottage industry that was "Law & Order," one show remains: "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

And this alone proves procedural shows can shine. Stories make sense, writing is tight, and actors are sharp. The result is a gritty drama celebrating its 300th episode Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Though the show shoots all over New York, its home base is a cavernous studio on a Hudson River pier. Here, actors, directors and producers speak with Zap2it while shooting the milestone episode.

This plot, as expected, deals with an excruciating topic -- kidnapping. As a dad bends down to retrieve a $20 bill on a subway platform, a stranger snatches his 7-year-old son and jumps onto a departing train.

The cops are off and running, stopping at nothing until they find the perps. Three actors have starred on the show since the 1999 premiere: Mariska Hargitay, Richard Belzer and Dann Florek as Detectives Olivia »

This week’s episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit marks its 300th episode. And now in Season 14, the franchise seems stronger than ever after weathering a big storm a year ago when original cast member Chris Meloni departed.

The silver lining out of that cast drama was that Kelli Giddish came on board as a series regular and her character, Detective Amanda Rollins, quickly became a fan favorite including shipping her character with that of hotter-than-ever Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay).

A lot of credit to Rollins’ popularity goes to Giddish, of course, who already had her share fans from the action series Chase and for her delicious role as Sophia Russo, lover to Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) on CBS’s The Good Wife.

Inspired by her role as Detective Benson on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," Mariska Hargitay founded the Joyful Heart Foundation to help abused women and children.

For over a decade, her charity has helped survivors to heal and empowered them with the tools to overcome.

Jim's Notebook: Open to Law & Order Svu, Louie and Go On

This week’s Jim’s Notebook gets emptied out on the East Coast, as I’m hitting a multitude of sets as well as New York Comic Con in the Big Apple.

Criminal Minds Old and New: Jeanne Tripplehorn and Paget Brewster Talk About the Future

27 September 2012 1:56 PM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Things are a little different on Criminal Minds this season, what with the departure of Paget Brewster and the introduction of Jeanne Tripplehorn as the latest Bau member Alex Blake. It’s a scary thing to become a part of a series well in to its lifespan – Criminal Minds just began Season 8 – especially given how the fanbase has shown how it responds to this kind of shake up. You might remember the last time Brewster left the show and what happened to her replacement. In season 6, Rachel Nichols joined the series as Ashley Seaver, only to be almost universally hated and soon fired once Brewster was brought back for Season 7. This does not bode well for Tripplehorn’s chances of being accepted.

“The fan base is huge for this show and I am honestly nervous about what they will think of Alex,” Tripplehorn told TV Guide. “A show bringing somebody »

'Svu' Q&A: Showrunner Warren Leight teases a season of suspicion -- and a '50 Shades'-inspired ep

If May’s season finale of Law & Order: Svu was meant to send a message, it was received loud-and-clear. The shocking cliffhanger (a dead hooker in the bed of Dann Florek’s Captain Cragen) was a drastic departure for the long-running procedural. Viewers can thank showrunner Warren Leight for this dramatic turn of events. Leight stepped into the show amidst its biggest shake-up ever: Christopher Meloni’s highly publicized departure after 12 years. “Any show on this long would have needed to change, some rejuvenation,” affirms Leight, “and leaving, in a way, opened up a lot of new possibilities. In the criminal justice-on-tv system, few procedurals have achieved as many episodes as Law & Order: Svu. This is its 300th story.

When NBC’s Svu airs its 300th episode on Oct. 24,  showrunner Warren Leight says fans should expect to see some familiar faces.

But let’s get this out of the way now: Christopher Meloni, who left the show last year, won’t reprise his role of Det. Elliot Stabler. Diehard fans will however be treated to an hour that showcases three members of the original cast – Mariska Hargitay, Dann Florek and Richard Belzer – and rewards those who’ve been watching from the start. »
