When Lin-Manuel Miranda made his entrance during the opening number of his history-making musical Hamilton on Saturday night, he received a one-minute standing ovation, with applause so loud it nearly brought the house down. This wasn't just any performance for the 36-year-old actor, who also penned the show's music, lyrics and book. It was his last in the title role of Alexander Hamilton. Miranda left the production - as did original cast members Leslie Odom, Jr., Phillipa Soo and Ariana DeBose - after being with the musical since its off-Broadway run at New York's Public Theater last winter. 2016 Emmy Contenders: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama

2 June 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Last year, Viola Davis made history as the first African-American woman to win the lead actress prize, and she could well repeat this year for her searing work on “How to Get Away With Murder.” With the exception of Elisabeth Moss, whose “Mad Men” ended its on-air run last year, Davis’ competition is likely to be the same: Claire Danes (“Homeland”), Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”), Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and Robin Wright (“House of Cards”).

Or, voters could choose to recognize Julianna Margulies, who has already won twice for “The Good Wife” — most recently in 2014 — yet wasn’t even nominated last year. With the series finale still fresh in voter’s minds, they would be wise to reward Margulies for her seven seasons of remarkable work. Along those lines, Michelle Dockery, nominated in 2012, 2013 and 2014 for “Downton Abbey,” could slip back in now that the show has ended.

Law & Order: Svu Boss Warren Leight on Stabler Regrets, Benson Changes and a Final Word to Fans

26 May 2016 6:37 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Leight's out on Law & Order: Svu. Warren Leight that is. The Tony-winning writer and executive producer ended his tenure on the NBC police drama with the season 17 finale "Heartfelt Passages." A particularly fitting name for his final episode that featured the elite squad of detectives losing one of their own—a first in 17 seasons. Under Leight, Law & Order: Svu underwent a shift, partially at of necessity as Christopher Meloni exited between seasons 12 and Leight's first, season 13. The series started focusing more on Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson, her rise to power in the squad room and for the first time in more than a decade, the character had a personal life that wasn't depicted as »

Why Mariska Hargitay Is More Committed to Law & Order: Svu Than Ever Before

25 May 2016 7:30 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson plays several different roles for many different people. She's the boss of the Special Victims Unit, she's mom to Noah, girlfriend to Tucker (yeah, get used to it), and hero to all (including viewers) on Law & Order: Svu. She's taken her licks and gotten back up time after time, so season 17, which Hargitay called a "huge," year for Benson, is no different. "For me it's been a balancing act. Balancing being the boss, balancing being reintegrated after the 'Townhouse Incident' and balancing motherhood and priorities—keeping all the balls in the air is what's so hard. Having Noah and feeling like I have so many kids," she told E! »

Misty Copeland Made Mariska Hargitay Cry for the Sweetest Reason

Mariska Hargitay is an A-list member of Taylor Swift's squad (only she and Ellen Pompeo have cats named in their honor), but that doesn't prevent her from getting starstruck. In fact, the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star was moved to tears when she met Misty Copeland, Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre, at Variety's Power of Women New York event, which was sponsored by Lifetime. E! News caught Mariska's emotional meeting with Misty on camera, and when we discovered the sweet reason behind her tears, we wanted to name our next pet after Olivia Benson, too. Mariska Hargitay to Receive Karma Award at Power of Women NY

5 April 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

It’s imperative to envision a world where women can feel safe, says Mariska Hargitay. Inspired by her role on NBC’s hit “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” she created the Joyful Heart Foundation to heal, educate and empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. For her work creating the foundation, Hargitay is receiving the Karma Award from the Karma Automotive company at Variety’s Power of Women New York luncheon on April 8 at Cipriani Midtown. Karma Automotive will make a donation to Joyful Heart.

“The fact that there’s this underlying belief that a world without sexual assault and domestic violence is not a realistic goal is one of the major obstacles to getting there,” Hargitay says. “It’s our responsibility to apply our best thinking to these issues that have been underfunded, under-researched, and under-regarded for so long,” adds the mom of three, whose “No »

For my film-loving friends and I, Ghoulies and its immediate sequel were almost rites of passage growing up – I distinctly remember renting them from not only the local video shop but also that strange guy that used to park on the street corner renting tapes out of his boot (or, if he was more successful, the back of a transit van). You know the one, he’d have the craziest VHS tapes you’d ever seen – Class of Nuke Em High, Black Roses, The Toxic Avenger, Ghoulies… all films that sold themselves on artwork alone. »
