2016 Emmy Contenders: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama

2 June 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Last year, Viola Davis made history as the first African-American woman to win the lead actress prize, and she could well repeat this year for her searing work on “How to Get Away With Murder.” With the exception of Elisabeth Moss, whose “Mad Men” ended its on-air run last year, Davis’ competition is likely to be the same: Claire Danes (“Homeland”), Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”), Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and Robin Wright (“House of Cards”).

Or, voters could choose to recognize Julianna Margulies, who has already won twice for “The Good Wife” — most recently in 2014 — yet wasn’t even nominated last year. With the series finale still fresh in voter’s minds, they would be wise to reward Margulies for her seven seasons of remarkable work. Along those lines, Michelle Dockery, nominated in 2012, 2013 and 2014 for “Downton Abbey,” could slip back in now that the show has ended.

Under Leight, Law & Order: Svu underwent a shift, partially at of necessity as Christopher Meloni exited between seasons 12 and Leight's first, season 13. The series started focusing more on Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson, her rise to power in the squad room and for the first time in more than a decade, the character had a personal life that wasn't depicted as »

Why Mariska Hargitay Is More Committed to Law & Order: Svu Than Ever Before

25 May 2016 7:30 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson plays several different roles for many different people. She's the boss of the Special Victims Unit, she's mom to Noah, girlfriend to Tucker (yeah, get used to it), and hero to all (including viewers) on Law & Order: Svu. She's taken her licks and gotten back up time after time, so season 17, which Hargitay called a "huge," year for Benson, is no different. "For me it's been a balancing act. Balancing being the boss, balancing being reintegrated after the 'Townhouse Incident' and balancing motherhood and priorities—keeping all the balls in the air is what's so hard. Having Noah and feeling like I have so many kids," she told E! »
