A Dog's Purpose trailer takes talking animal movies to a whole new level

52 minutes ago | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

It's National Dog Day today apparently, as learned via the numerous posts about it clogging up my Twitter feed. As a result, Universal saw this as the perfect opportunity to serve up a trailer for A Dog's Purpose, the latest in a long tradition of talking animal movies. However, upon closer look at Lasse Hallström's film, there's something more... Read More »

A Dog’s Purpose Rings In National Dog Day With Refreshing First Trailer

2 hours ago | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

You’ve heard the saying claiming cats have nine lives, but what about their docile companions? Introducing us to an uplifting story of canine reincarnation, the first trailer for A Dog’s Purpose has scurried online just in time for National Dog Day.

The pic, one lifted from W. Bruce Cameron’s best-seller, hails from director Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules). As the trailer above reveals, Josh Gad lends his vocal chords to the central canine, who experiences life through a variety of wildly different vignettes – and breeds – ranging from a cutesy pup to a trained German Shepherd. The story then becomes about Gad’s interaction with each new owner, a pitch that is about as crowd-pleasing as they come.

Imagine the premise of Todd Solondz’s indie pic Wiener-Dog, only spreading its heartfelt story across multiple eras, beginning with the 1940s. Outside of Gad’s multi-faceted role, »

Coming Distractions: The trailer for A Dog’s Purpose gets real heavy, real fast

2 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

It’s National Dog Day today. And hey, what better way to celebrate man’s best friend than with a trailer for a movie that’ll let you watch the single worst part of the joyful ritual of dog ownership not just once, but repeatedly? That’s the premise of A Dog’s Purpose, the new Dennis Quaid film that tracks the lives, deaths, and reincarnations of a single Josh Gad-voiced pooch as he wanders around the earth in various bodies that will, inevitably, fail far faster than those of the humans who love them.

You can tell from the tone of the trailer that everybody involved—including What’s Eating Gilbert Grape director Lasse Hallström—thinks this is heart-warming, and not incredibly, depressingly grim. And hey, maybe they’re right: more than enough people bought the W. Bruce Cameron novel it’s based on to justify A Dog »

Universal has debuted a trailer for the movie called A Dog's Purpose, directed by Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallström (who also made the movie Hachi: A Dog's Tale ). Disney's Live-Action Little Mermaid Teams Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken

16 August 2016 1:09 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Earlier this year, Disney brought on Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda to star in Mary Poppins Returns, alongside Emily Blunt. It seems the studio is doubling down with this actor-musician, bringing him aboard their remake of The Little Mermaid, where he will compose songs alongside Alan Menken. It isn't known if he will also act in this remake, but he is said to be involved in supervising the story and overseeing the writing of the script.

Deadline reports that Lin-Manuel Miranda will also produce this live-action remake with Marc Platt, who is currently prepping his long-awaited big screen adaptation of the Broadway sensation Wicked. This news comes just a few months after a report surfaced that the studio wasn't sure if they wanted to move forward with this new live-action project.

There is currently another live-action adaptation set at Universal Pictures, with Chloe Moretz to star as Ariel. Up and coming »

Newswire: Keira Knightley is Disney’s new Sugar Plum Fairy

16 August 2016 12:29 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Ethereal enough as a mere mortal, Keira Knightley will play an actual sprite. According to Variety, Knightly will take on the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in Disney’s upcoming The Nutcracker And The Four Realms. The adaptation of the classic tale, a staple of ballet schools everywhere, is set to be directed by Lasse Hallström, but don’t necessarily expect Knightley to be stepping into any pointe shoes or going all Natalie Portman in Black Swan to prepare. The movie will be light on the pirouetting, with the principal duties going to famed American Ballet Theatre star Misty Copeland. However, we’re going to assume that at some point during the movie we’ll hear Tchaikovsky’s iconic “Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy” as Knightley appears on screen. (Now enjoy having that stuck in your head for the rest of the day.)
