Jane Campion on Lack of Female Filmmakers, ‘Top of the Lake: China Girl’

Jane Campion on Lack of Female Filmmakers, ‘Top of the Lake: China Girl’
Jane Campion is a hugger. The Oscar winner, who punctuates every other sentence with a loud, earthy laugh, is so into physical affection that she won’t let a reporter from Variety leave an interview without dragging him onto a couch to snuggle with her and her “Top of the Lake: China Girl” co-director Ariel Kleiman. It’s definitely an unusual way to end a grilling by the press, but Campion claims this kind of emotional openness is one of the things that separates female filmmakers from their male counterparts.

“There’s a different ethos,” she says. “We’re always cuddling and carrying on. I was with Andrea Arnold last night and we were cuddling. Then Uma (Thurman) came along and we were all cuddling.”

Not that “China Girl” should be mistaken for something light and fluffy. It’s a hard-edged mystery that delves into the world of sex trafficking,

How Former Teen Idols Are Getting Second Lives on Ya Shows Like ‘Riverdale’ and ‘13 Reasons Why’
More than 30 years after enduring “16 Candles,” Molly Ringwald is heading back to the school dance, and “Riverdale” couldn’t be happier.

The former teen icon, known for her membership in the ‘80s Brat Pack and her John Hughes pedigree, guest stars on Thursday’s “Riverdale” as Archie’s mom Mary. She and her estranged husband Fred (Luke Perry) will be back together temporarily to see their son perform at the high school dance. While the casting was a natural fit because of Ringwald’s red hair, her teen star cred also helped. Both “Riverdale” and “13 Reasons Why” are two teen-centric shows that have been bringing back former teen stars to play the older generation, and reaping the benefits.

Riverdale Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Chapter Four: The Last Picture Show

  • TVfanatic
It finally happened!

This is the moment I've been waiting for all season. (And it's only been four episodes...)

The affair is over. Ms. Grundy packed up her bags and hightailed it out of town on Riverdale Season 1 Episode 4. Let's savor this development for a second.

First and foremost, I don't hate the character. She had an interesting backstory for all the lies. And Sarah Habel, who portrayed Ms. Grundy, did a fine job making her seem timid yet manipulative.

This has more to do with the teacher-student affair storyline. I've seen this trope done to death before in teen dramas. I didn't want them to dive too much into this plot.

Luckily it only lasted four episodes. And we also got an extra mystery thrown in to explain this younger Ms. Grundy.

Betty: Ms. Grundy showed up in Riverdale a year ago, out of thin air. There is no record of her before that.

Josie and the Pussycats perform ‘Sugar, Sugar’ in clip from tomorrow’s Riverdale

The CW has released a clip from tomorrow’s second episode of Riverdale ‘A Touch of Evil’ which sees Josie and the Pussycats perform a new version of the iconic 1969 hit ‘Sugar, Sugar’.

“The hit song ‘Sugar, Sugar’ has always been a huge part of Archie’s history, so we knew we had to include it in Riverdale in some way,” said executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “Since Archie’s just starting his musical journey when we meet him, we thought it would be a fun reinvention to have Josie and the Pussycats perform an updated version of ‘Sugar, Sugar’ — with an assist from Riverdale High’s cheerleaders and resident mean girl Cheryl Blossom.”

Secrets Unraveled — As new details of Jason’s death begin to emerge, Archie (Kj Apa) pleads with Miss Grundy (guest star Sarah Habel) to come forward with what they heard at Sweetwater River. Betty (Lili Reinhart) makes

Feel “A Touch Of Evil” With New Riverdale Trailer

Now that the series premiere of Riverdale has come and gone, many of us can likely agree that it made quite the impression (just check out our review). With a solid foundation having been laid in the form of an Archie-Betty-Veronica dynamic that’s true to the source material and a killer murder mystery to boot serving as season 1’s backdrop, all eyes are on the second episode set air next week.

Granted, they did touch on a lot of the teen drama tropes last night, but it should be interesting to see if those Twin Peaks comparisons ring true now that the investigation into Jason Blossom’s death is in full swing. Although most, if not all, of the blanks will be filled in as the series progresses, we can’t help but wonder if any other juicy details will be disclosed in the upcoming prequel comic.

6 Reasons Why 'Riverdale' Is the New Teen Drama We've Been Waiting For

6 Reasons Why 'Riverdale' Is the New Teen Drama We've Been Waiting For
Of all the comic book adaptations that have flooded film and television in recent years, perhaps none are as ambitious as Riverdale. The CW’s attempt to transport the family-friendly cast of Archie Comics into a dark and soapy teen drama could have been disastrous, but instead, it looks to be a very promising offering, calling to mind some of the network’s greatest hits, like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.

Here’s six reasons why you should set your DVR for Riverdale, and prepare yourselves for a new fave.

1. A Cast of New, New Hotties (like The O.C. blessed us with)

One of the greatest things a teen drama can do is introduce viewers to a whole new cast of nearly-unknown hotties to swoon over. This is why certain segments of the population still dream of Adam Brody as the ultimate boyfriend or give Jared Leto a pass for almost anything.

Riverdale does just

'Riverdale': Everything You Need to Know About Dark 'Archie' TV Show

What leaps to mind whenever someone mentions Archie comics? Teenagers crammed into a jalopy, driving to the soda shop? A romantic rivalry between girl-next-door Betty and spoiled rich kid Veronica? Bubblegum pop hits like "Sugar, Sugar?" Jughead's stupid hat?

Or has no one mentioned the name "Archie Andrews" to you in years?

The creative team behind the CW's high school soap Riverdale hopes you remember just enough about the old comic books to be excited about seeing them radically reimagined. Backed by producer Greg Berlanti (who helps manage the network's DC Comics properties Supergirl,

Riverdale To Experience “A Touch Of Evil” In Second Episode

Aside from a prequel comic and Free Comic Book Day offering, those eagerly anticipating Riverdale have much to look forward to. Up until recently, not much information regarding the series has been divulged beyond the pilot episode, but now, that’s thankfully changed.

In the synopsis for “Chapter Two: A Touch of Evil,” two things quickly become apparent: Archie Andrews’ life is extremely complicated and the murder mystery gripping the quaint town does indeed seem to serve as the backdrop for the inaugural season. Although we expect interesting developments each week, our better judgment says the unraveling of this enigma will be a marathon, not a sprint.

Speaking of the official description, you can check it out below:

As new details of Jason’s death begin to emerge, Archie (Kj Apa) pleads with Miss Grundy (guest star Sarah Habel) to come forward with what they heard at Sweetwater River.
