There were some things about Derek - Ricky Gervais’s character piece set in an old people’s home - that were uncannily familiar to the comedic tricks he pulled off to stunning effect in The Office – the mockumentary form that he helped perfect, the undercutting punch lines seemingly off-mike, the cut away from the set piece to the more intimate chats direct to camera.
This worked in its usual fashion for Gervais’s effortless throwaways – “Ferne Britton before she had her stomach tied up or something”, but jarred, initially, when Derek was crying about the loss of his favourite resident Joan, who told him kindness was magic. I repeat, initially.
There was a lot of Norman Wisdom in Gervais’s take on Derek, with a big smidgeon of Mr Rigsby thrown in for good measure. But, if it showed his limitations as an actor, he was positively De Niro-esque in comparison with Karl Pilkington. »

Pregnant socialite Peaches Geldof had to rush her dog to a veterinarian on Friday after the labrador retriever was attacked in a London park.
The daughter of Irish rocker and Live Aid hero Bob Geldof was walking her pet Parpy when he was bitten by a Staffordshire bull terrier.
Detailing the upsetting incident in a series of Twitter.com posts, she writes, "Parpy got bitten by a staffie (Staffordshire) in the park! This staff had a big stick, parpy went over to help him carry it and he pinned him down and savaged his leg!! Parpy cant walk on way to vet (sic)! It was so horrible. I hate these people who think that training their dogs to be aggressive & violent is ok. Sick. Poor parpy is whimpering.
"He has a heart of gold & only wanted to help the evil staffie carry his stick. Vet will fix his leg but it shouldnt (sic) have happened. Furious."
Geldof's pooch had his leg bandaged by the vet and the star, who is due to give birth later this month, assured fans he would be just fine.
She tweeted, "Thanks everyone 4 ur (sic) kind well wishes to Parpy chops! He had two shots at the vet & didnt (sic) make a peep, he is going to rest & will be fine!" »

To celebrate the release of This Must Be The Place, I have listed ten films which share their name with songs. For those who don’t know, This Must Be The Place shares its name with the Talking Heads tune. And even though film and song have little in common, both song and Talking Heads front man David Byrne, appear in the film.
There is a proverbial bottomless pit of films and song which share a title. Some overtly, in reference to each other, whilst many are just tenuous links. My list has been dictated purely by a love of rock music. Bar one disco tune and a classic piece of soul; everything you are about to see is, like the film which inspired this list, connected to the warrior poets of melody. The likes of music based films such as The Wall or Yellow Submarine have been omitted for the sake of originality, »

Last week, we took a look at the relative dearth of leading men in Hollywood: why Tom Cruise, Will Smith, et al. remain at the top of the tree and why so few serious competitors have emerged since. But one of the most exciting things about our job is getting to watch the new names that emerge, breakouts who have the potential to join the A-listers, or at the very least, deliver a host of hugely exciting performances for decades to come.
So we've decided to kick off our On The Rise selection for 2012 by looking at some of the actors who we're tipping for big things in the next few years. Last time we made these kinds of picks and predictions we did pretty well, listing the likes of Joel Edgerton, Edgar Ramirez, Jason Sudeikis, Adam Scott, Jake Johnson and David Oyelowo who have all gone on to become much-sought-after names, »

One does like a tune one can hum: Prince Charles speaks up for composer Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918), best known for setting William Blake's Jerusalem to music, and the hymn Dear Lord And Father of Mankind. Parry is often considered a minor figure, especially compared to English composers who followed, such as Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Charles thinks Parry deserves better and, with the help of Parry's music and contributions from the likes of pianist and broadcaster David Owen Morris, he builds a decent case. Jonathan Wright
