Colin Firth To Play Noel Coward In 'Mad Dogs And Englishmen,' & Co-Star In Rupert Everett's Oscar Wilde Biopic

22 May 2012 12:50 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Colin Firth is set to play famed English playwright Noel Coward, in the Willy Holtzman-penned project, “Mad Dogs And Englishmen,” about Coward’s eventful two week stay at The Desert Inn in Las Vegas in 1955. Although there’s still no director attached, this seems like a great role for the actor to sink his teeth into, as Coward was famous for what Time called “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise.” So we’ll be definitely be looking forward to this project in the future. [Screen Daily]

Two giants of the Scandinavian cinematic world, Lone Scherfig (“An Education” and “One Day”) and Pernilla August (“Beyond”), are set to join forces together on an adaptation of the classic Hjalmar Söderberg novel, “The Serious Game.” The novel follows a couple who meet early in life, go their separate ways and then meet again when they are married to other people. »

Rupert Everett Goes (Oscar) Wilde

21 May 2012 5:09 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The story of playwright, raconteur and controversial figure Oscar Wilde has been recounted before on the big screen, most notably in 1997’s Wilde, which saw Stephen Fry in the lead. Now Rupert Everett is aiming to get his own take on the man’s story into cinemas, writing, directing and starring in The Happy Prince.Everett has rounded up a great cast that includes such British stalwarts as Colin Firth, Edward Fox, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson. We assume the latter is apparently contractually obliged to appear in every film about Wilde, since he’s also in the 1997 effort. The Happy Prince is described as a comedy with tragic undertones that follows Wilde’s final days and has the author / genius observing his own failure with his trademark brand of wit and ironic distance. It’s far from Everett’s first brush with the man, since he’s long been »

Rupert Everett Directing Colin Firth, Tom Wilkinson, and Emily Watson In ‘The Happy Prince’

To lift a sentiment shared by Matt Zoller Seitz this afternoon: Will the same people who relentlessly accused Girls of nepotism find themselves up in arms over this news? There are no familial relations at hand, I don’t doubt that something interesting lies in the film at hand, and I can’t imagine these people are just signing on because a friend is directing it — but it’s nevertheless frustrating to see such blatant hypocrisy worm its way into the public discourse so easily.

Oh, yes; there’s some news to tell you about. THR informs us that actor Rupert Everett has attracted Colin Firth, Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson, and Edward Fox for The Happy Prince, an Oscar Wilde-centered film that will serve as his directing and screenwriting debut; he’ll also play the main subject. Here, we’ll see the noted humorist’s spend his final days »

Is this really the end of Judi Dench's reign as M?

10 April 2012 9:57 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Rumour has it that Bond's boss is going to die in the latest movie and be replaced by Ralph Fiennes. Will you miss Dench's take on the character?

Skyfall, the 23rd "official" film about the world's most famous suave secret agent, has been subject to more than its fair share of speculation, even for a Bond movie. There are those who still seem convinced that Naomie Harris is playing a version of Moneypenny in Sam Mendes's film, despite the actor's fervent protests to the contrary, and there have even been suggestions that 007 is about to swap his beloved Martini, shaken not stirred, for a pint of Heineken.

The latest rumour to hit the tabloid carousel originates from the previously little-known Brit website Best For Film, and has been swiftly picked up by gossip-hungry red-tops.

It suggests that Judi Dench's M, head of MI6, and 007's tough yet occasionally tender boss, »

Exploring Ridley Scott's Directorial Debut, 'The Duellists'

Harvey Keitel and Matthew Guinness in The Duellists

Photo: Paramount Pictures With all the excitement surrounding Ridley Scott's upcoming film Prometheus marking the director's much anticipated return to the world of Alien, which he brought to life back in 1979, I've heard many people reference Scott's 1977 directorial debut, The Duellists. Strangely I've heard it mentioned not only because Scott has a new film coming out, but I've read it mentioned in articles discussing its accomplished cinematic swordplay. My interest was piqued and I took to Netflix. Based on Joseph Conrad's 1908 short story "The Duel" (download it for free here), which itself is based on a true story, The Duelists centers on Armand d'Hubert (Keith Carradine) and Gabriel Feraud (Harvey Keitel), a pair of officers in Napoleon's army. The film begins with Feraud in a duel with a man we'll later learn is the nephew of the Mayor of Strasbourg. »

British acting family will appear together at a restored venue built by their talented forebear

Members of the Fox family, one of Britain's most glamorous theatrical dynasties, are to appear on stage together for the first time to pay tribute to the legacy of their illustrious forebear, the engineer Samson Fox.

Actor brothers Edward and James, together with the third brother, the film and theatre producer Robert, are at the heart of a family that has produced two generations of talent, from James's children Lydia and Laurence, who has a leading role in ITV's Lewis and is husband to Billie Piper, to Edward's son Freddie, young star of the BBC Christmas adaptation of The Mystery of Edwin Drood and younger brother of actress Emilia, who is best known for her television roles in the BBC's Merlin and as a forensic scientist in the drama Silent Witness.
