Part of the credit goes to the master of ceremonies James Corden, best known as the goofy host CBS's Late Late Show, yet still a dorky theater kid at heart; his charming, cheerful persona brought »

Tony Awards Presenters & Broadway Carpool

8 June 2016 1:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Tony Awards hit this weekend with James Corden, former Tony winner and current star of The Late Late Show,  hosting. Sundays ceremony will feature performances from the following musicals: Bright Star, The Color Purple (adapted from the film), Fiddler on the Roof, Hamilton, On Your Feet (the Gloria Estefan musical) School of Rock (adapted from the film), She Loves Me, Shuffle Along, Spring Awakening, and Waitress (adapted from the film).

But which stars of stage and screen will be presenting and which actually belong there?  Since the Tony Awards are televised they tend to give TV & film stars the honors of presenting even though they really ought to pair them with stage giants to make the festivities more attuned to the actual honors being handed out. That minor quibble aside at least the stars chosen to present generally have some sort of Broadway connection.

Lucie Arnaz: Network Executives Still ‘Don’t Care’ About Diversity

19 May 2016 3:53 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Paley Center for Media honored the contributions of hispanic Americans to the television landscape, for the first time, at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan on Wednesday night.

The night hit the rewind button on American television to 1950, when network executives at CBS told Lucille Ball that a show about a spunky redhead married to a Cuban band leader Desi Arnaz wasn’t believable. Undeterred, Arnaz put Ball into his act, and toured the country. Eventually, CBS brass got on board.

When executives wanted to shoot the show in New York on kinescope, Arnaz, who wanted to base the show in Los Angeles, again pushed back. He suggested three cameras, a live audience and a show shot on film. CBS reluctantly agreed and the result was “I Love Lucy,” a smash hit that pulled in more than 60 million viewers, invented the re-run and set the new standard for how situational »

Tina Fey, Megan Hilty Fete NBC’s Bob Greenblatt at Actors Fund Gala

25 April 2016 9:40 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Tina Fey took time out from the opening of her husband’s latest Broadway effort on Monday night to shower praise on NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt as he received the Actors Fund’s Medal of Honor.

Fey noted that during her 19 years of working at NBC she’s seen nine heads of NBC come and go. Greenblatt, who has run the entertainment side of the network since 2011, stands out as uniquely qualified for the job, drawing an analogy to characters from her NBC comedy “30 Rock.”

“He comes from a creative background, not a corporate one,” Fey told the crowd at the Marriott Marquis. “Bob Greenblatt is much more Kenneth the Page than Jack Donaghy.”

Fey hustled across the street in Times Square to present Greenblatt’s kudo shortly after the opening of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s one-man effort “Fully Committed,” which features original music by her husband, Jeff Richmond. »
