Mark Duplass Joins Kathryn Bigelow's 'Zero Dark Thirty,' Bobby Cannavale Joins Woody Allen's Latest

Aside from the superb films he co-directs with his brother Jay, like "Baghead," "Cyrus" and "Jeff Who Lives At Home," we've been seeing more and more of Mark Duplass as an actor recently. The writer/director/star appears in cult comedy series "The League," and has recently cropped up in indie festival favorites like "Your Sister's Sister" and "Safety Not Guaranteed," as well as in a role in Lawrence Kasdan's "Darling Companion." But it looks like the actor's just taken his first major studio role, in a film that's one of our most anticipated of the year.

Despite Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" (her film about the hunt for 9/11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden) having been filming for quite some time now, it's still adding cast members, and the latest on board, according to Deadline, is Duplass, who'll take a 'key supporting role.' First Look At Ralph Fiennes & Felicity Jones In Charles Dickens Biopic 'The Invisible Woman'

19 May 2012 8:39 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Having found critical acclaim with his directorial debut "Coriolanus" last year, Ralph Fiennes has been determined not to follow fellow Brit actors Gary Oldman and Tim Roth in letting years pass before he helms another picture. Even before his first picture was in theaters, Fiennes was planning his follow-up: an adaptation of Claire Tomalin's "The Invisible Woman," which tells the story of the relationship between author Charles Dickens and Nelly Ternan, the much younger actress who became his lifelong mistress.

Penned by Abi Morgan ("Shame," "The Iron Lady"), shooting is underway, and now Empire has the first look at the film, with new stills of Fiennes as Dickens, and "Like Crazy" star Felicity Jones as Ternan. The cast also includes Kristin Scott-Thomas, as Ternan's mother, Tom Hollander as fellow novelist Wilkie Collins, and Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark in "Game Of Thrones") as Collins' common-law wife, and while it was »

The Dark Knight Rises Catwoman and Batman Wall Posters

19 May 2012 7:40 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Trend International has released two wall posters tied to The Dark Knight Rises, one featuring Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and the other featuring Batman (Christian Bale).

In related news, this month's Rolling Stone magazine features an in-depth look at Bane (Tom Hardy) and his costume.

Christopher Nolan on Bane's uniform.

"Bane dresses in Military fashion. He leads a band of fanatical mercenaries who have done all kinds of horrible things and end up in Gotham. One of the influences on the script was Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, and with this overcoat, we wanted to infuse the romanticism of the French Revolution mixed with the World War II functionality. The essence of Bane is military power and brute force combine with revolutionary fervor.

Costume designer Lindy Hemming combined modern military gear with more old-fashioned materials like leather to give Bane's outfit the utilitarian, proactive quality he needs. He's always ready to fight. »

Rocky Producer To Tackle Rebekah Brooks Movie

19 May 2012 7:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The producer behind Rocky is set to turn former British tabloid editor Rebekah Brooks' fall from grace into a big screen movie.

Brooks quit as CEO of media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News International company in the wake of the News of the World phone hacking scandal last year. She had previously edited the defunct title as well as daily newspaper The Sun.

She was charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice earlier this week (begs14May12), and now there are plans to turn her meteoric rise to the top of British media and the subsequent demise of her career into a film.

Gene Kirkwood, who produced Sylvester Stallone's hit Rocky, insists he was drawn to Brooks' life story due to its comparison to Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations.

He says, "She's a great story. Her rise is almost like Great Expectations - with a moral. (The film will be) a porthole into Murdoch's world. I see it as a Citizen Kane approach."

The project will start rolling when the phone hacking scandal reaches some sort of conclusion. Kirkwood adds, "As soon as there is an ending, we're going forward. Murdoch might retire - who knows?" »

[First Look] Felicity Jones as ‘The Invisible Woman’ and Ralph Fiennes as Charles Dickens In His ‘Coriolanus’ Follow-Up

18 May 2012 12:06 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With the inherent difficulty of getting a film produced, many actors-turned-directors often make that effort just once before the upward battle becomes too laborious. Such is not the case with Ralph Fiennes. He debuted his Shakespeare adaptation Coriolanus last year and he’s already shooting his next feature, The Invisible Woman.

We’ve got the first look today at the director, who stars as Charles Dickens, as well as his significant other, played by Felicity Jones (Like Crazy).  Abi Morgan (Shame) has adapted Claire Tomalin‘s novel, which tells of the 13-year affair between Dickens and Nelly Ternan, a woman who was 27 years the beloved author’s junior. Tom Hollander (In the Loop, Hanna) and Kristin Scott Thomas (Sarah’s Key, The English Patient) round out the cast. Check out the images above and below via Empire for the film we expect to arrive in 2013.

First Look At Ralph Fiennes' Dickens

18 May 2012 10:11 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

A first look at Ralph Fiennes' The Invisible Woman has appeared in our inbox and guess what! She's not invisible. Look, you can see her face and everything. The uninvisible lady in question is Nelly Ternan, played by Felicity Jones (pictured), the object of Charles Dickens' (Fiennes) affections over a covert decade-long affair.  Of course, the title of Fiennes' second acting/directing gig is a metaphor for the enigmatic lady's state of social limbo; she loves the great novelist and her beauty, in turn, haunts him, but Victorian life conspires against them. As well as 'The Very Great Book Of Beards', Fiennes' jumping-off point for the film is Claire Tomalin's biography of Ternan, a married school teacher who looks back over her past with a mixture of nostalgia and sorrow. It's a framing mechanism familiar from Fiennes' work in The English Patient and here he's reunited old Minghella alumnus Kristin Scott Thomas. »

Red Bull will give Oliver Twist its "3-D parkour action movie" wings

17 May 2012 10:37 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Charles Dickens' drably lacking-in-caffeine-fueled-extreme-sports-action novel Oliver Twist will finally receive a Red Bull-sponsored makeover as a 3-D film about parkour, due to the bureaucratic difficulties in exhuming Charles Dickens' remains, affixing them with oversized novelty sunglasses, and sending them careening through Trafalgar Square on a skateboard. A far more actionable solution has been found in simply taking Dickens' immortal 19th-century tale and transforming it into Twist, a modern-day story about the Fagin Gang and the daring art thefts they undertake by elaborately jumping over obstacles, which—much like Taylor Lautner's own recently announced parkour film—will appeal to today »

Red Bull Developing 3D Parkour Version of Oliver Twist

Red Bull Media House has signed on to produce "Twist," a 3D re-telling of Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist" that's set in the present day. The plan is to go into pre-production this January. Story will center around the novel's Fagin Gang, which will use parkour to carry out a series of art thefts in the film. The original idea comes from brothers Lynch and Simon Thomas. Austria-based energy giant Red Bull launched its media and content business in 2007. Company owns television channel Servus TV channel and last year released "The Art of Flight," an 80-minute film centered on snowboarding. »

Red Bull Producing Action-Packed Film about Oliver Twist

15 May 2012 4:00 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Red Bull Media House, the same company that brought us the popular energy drink, is set to produce a film called Twist for Pure Grass Films and the Salt Co. The movie will be a modern day 3D adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. I honestly never would have imagined that Red Bull would end up producing a movie about this story; of course, this version's got a little action-packed spin to it.

According to Variety, this is an original concept in which the story will center around the Fagin Gang, only this time it will include the physical art of parkour to carry out a series of art thefts in the film. This is the art of moving through urban environments by vaulting, rolling, running, climbing, and jumping. So it makes a little more sense that Red Bull has come on board. The concept comes from »

Charles Dickens Getting a Parkour Update in 3D Action Film 'Twist'

15 May 2012 11:16 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

The line between fake movie premises and real ones is becoming increasingly small in today's movie landscape. A few years ago, it was obvious that certain films were never going to get a greenlight because their concepts were simply too ludicrous to imagine. But this news story has me scratching my head and rethinking what is possible in the movie industry today. Variety reports that Red Bull's media branch is producing a 3D parkour movie called Twist, based on Charles Dickens' classic novel Oliver Twist. The modern-day story sees the kids in the Fagin Gang using parkour to pull off a series of art heists. Um, what? So who's responsible for this? The Brothers Lynch, who have directed short films before but haven't tackled a feature, came up with the modern retelling with Simon Thomas, but the "written by" credit is actually going to Kevin Lehane, the writer of »

Just What We Need: A Red Bull-Fueled, Parkour Version of Charles Dickens’ ‘Oliver Twist’

15 May 2012 11:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It would be easy to mock the idea of a parkour Oliver Twist. It could certainly be seen by the cynical as the perversion of a classic, one that will most certainly shove modern hipness into a story meant to be a serious microscope into poverty and the ethical impossibilities it presents. But what’s the fun in that? Instead, let’s celebrate the prospect of parkour flipping pickpockets all hopped up on Red Bull. According to Variety, the energy drink company is pairing with Pure Grass Films and the Salt Co. to create Twist – a currently-set take on the classic novel from Charles Dickens. Is there any chance it won’t be in 3D? Of course not. This shit is going to be sailing into your eye balls in as many dimensions as possible. The concept, from Lynch and Simon Thomas, follows the Fagin Gang as they steal stuff from people using parkour. Yup »

James Wood says BBC2 sitcom's cast are 'too bloody successful' but hopes to make a third series in 2013

The writer of Rev has admitted there will not be a third series of the award-winning BBC2 sitcom this year because the cast, including Tom Hollander and Olivia Colman, are "too bloody successful".

So far the BBC has made two series and a Christmas special, and has attracted a range of impressive guest stars including Ralph Fiennes, Richard E Grant, Hugh Bonneville, Geoffrey Palmer, James Purefoy and the veteran actor Sylvia Syms.

James Wood, the co-creator with Hollander of the comedy about a London inner-city vicar, told MediaGuardian: "The cast are too bloody successful."

Wood said he was "cautiously optimistic" about getting the cast together in 2013 but this could not be guaranteed.

"The other thing of course we need to do is to make sure that we maintain the same standards as with the other two series, »

DVD Playhouse – May 2012

By Allen Gardner

Shame (20th Century Fox) Director Steve McQueen’s harrowing portrait of a Manhattan sex addict (Michael Fassbender, in the year’s most riveting performance) whose psyche goes into overload when his equally-troubled sister (Carey Mulligan) visits unexpectedly. Exquisitely-made on every level, save for the screenplay, which makes its point after about thirty minutes. While it tries hard to be a modern-day Last Tango in Paris, this fatal flaw makes it fall somewhat short. The much- ballyhooed sex scenes and frontal nudity are the least-interesting things about the film, incidentally, which is still a must-see for discriminating adults who seek out challenging material. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Masterpiece Classic: Great Expectations

Masterpiece Classic brings one of Charles Dickens' most beloved tales to life in a three-part miniseries. Pip (Douglas Booth) is a child of low birth who is given the chance to rise above and become a gentleman. He has a mysterious benefactor paying for his ascent into high society, and he believes Miss Havisham (Gillian Anderson), a mentally unstable and extremely wealthy spinster, is grooming him to wed her adopted daughter Estella (Vanessa Kirby). There are other forces at work that Pip doesn't see, though, and as he spends more time drinking with his pals in tailored suits, he might be losing the qualities that made people have high expectations for him in the first place.
