Highlander: The Series and why you should watch it

Scott Varnham Aug 15, 2016

It may be so 90s it hurts, but the Highlander TV series spin-off is still very much worth a watch...

You may have seen a few articles about the original Highlander movie recently, as it’s just celebrated its 30th anniversary. Lots of things have turned 30 this year. Just a few examples: The Legend Of Zelda, Pixar, the M25. Fine institutions, but did any of them spawn a mostly superior TV series in 1992? I think not. Don’t let the fact that it was made in the 90s put you off. People still watch Buffy.

The series follows the adventures of Duncan MacLeod (cousin of the movie’s Connor). Explaining the premise of Highlander in complex detail would make me go far over my word count, so I’ll be brief. Basically, immortal sword fighters fight to decapitate each other in order to be the last one »

The Mighty Boosh: celebrating BBC Three originals

BBC Three put Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding’s wilfully shambolic live act and radio series, The Mighty Boosh, on TV…

Part of The Mighty Boosh’s delight comes from its unlikelihood as a TV sitcom. Its boundless Day-Glo imagination isn’t an immediate fit with the constraints of the form. A sunshine simpleton and his awkward, jazz-obsessed colleague meet mythic monsters and talking animals while performing expertly observed musical parody? It’s not exactly My Family.

And yet a television exec did. Granted, probably not in those exact words. After Danny Wallace opened the door »

Review: Surely you'll enjoy the 'Airplane'-esque silliness of 'Angie Tribeca'

14 January 2016 1:46 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Every time I sing the praises of TBS' "Angie Tribeca" on Twitter, I get one of two responses: "That's a comedy? I thought it was another boring police procedural." and "That's a real show? I thought it was a viral video parody promoting a product I couldn't quite identify." On the one hand, this speaks to what a poor job TBS has done of marketing the show, which will debut with a 25-hour, commercial-free marathon of its first season(*) on Sunday night at 9. On the other, put those two misconceptions together, and you more or less have "Angie Tribeca." It's a real show, but one so committed to parodying police procedurals like "NCIS" and "Law & Order: Svu" that it's hard to put any one moment in a promo and not have it look like the genuine article. (*) There are only 10 episodes of that season, so each episode will air »
