20 April 2012 12:04 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

With Stoker getting ready to set sail for acclaimed director Park Chan-Wook, all eyes are on him to see what he'll be up to next. Turns out he has quite The Axe to grind! Read on for details.

Chan-wook tells the Korea Joon Gang Daily, "I was planning to make another film, 'The Axe,' before I started shooting 'Stoker.' But while I was still seeking investors for that film, I received the screenplay for 'Stoker.' So 'The Axe' will be my next work, though I need to do some more work on the casting and attracting investors. I’m also thinking about making a historical film, but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to do that."

In the film (a remake of Costa-Gavras’ 2005 film Le Couperet [The Ax], adapted from a novel by Donald E. Westlake), “a middle-aged, middle-class salaryman loses his job after a downsizing, »

19 April 2012 9:30 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Oldboy director Park Chan-wook is currently in the process of directing his first American feature film called Stoker. The film was scripted by Prison Break's Wentworth Miller, and has a great cast of actors that includes Nicole Kidman, Dermot Mulroney, Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, Lucas Till, Jacki Weaver, Alden Ehrenreich and Phyllis Somerville.

Now it looks like the director has his next project lined up. In a recent interview the director revealed that the next film he takes on will be a remake of Costa-Gavras‘ 2005 film Le Couperet, also known as The Ax. This was actually the movie he was going to make before Stoker came along. The original movie followed “a chemist, who loses his job to outsourcing. Two years later and still jobless, he hits on a solution: to genuinely eliminate his competition.” Here's what Chan-wook had to say when he was asked what his next project would be, »

Park Chan-Wook Says His Remake Of 'The Ax' Will Follow 'Stoker'; Reveals He Was Up For 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'

We still know relatively little about Park Chan-Wook’s Hollywood debut “Stoker,” considering that we’re expecting to see it in theatres before the year’s out. Starring Nicole Kidman, Dermot Mulroney, Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, and written by Wentworth Miller (yes, of “Prison Break” fame), the film is one that is being batted around as a contender for Cannes and is one of the most anticipated films of the year, in any event. Park recently chatted with Korea Joongang Daily (via The Film Stage) about the plot:

“The story revolves around a father, mother and adolescent daughter who live in an isolated house in a suburb. But all is not well in the family and there is friction between the mother and daughter. One day, the father dies suddenly in a car accident, and the story starts when an estranged uncle shows up at the father’s funeral, »

Besides a few set photos, things have been remarkably quiet when it comes to the Hollywood debut of Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Thirst). Stoker, starring Nicole Kidman, Dermot Mulroney, Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, Lucas Till, Jacki Weaver, Alden Ehrenreich and Phyllis Somerville, will likely be released by Fox Searchlight this year after a possible Cannes bow. Now we’ve finally got some more details coming, along with news of the next projects from the filmmakers.

The drama is scripted by Prison Break star Wentworth Miller and has tones of Alfred Hitchock‘s classic Shadow of a Doubt, as Wasikowska’s father perishes in a car accident (his  funeral being the opening shot of the film) and her estranged uncle Charlie (Goode) makes a visit to stay with the family, including her mother (Kidman). As Wasikowska’s character gets more attached to this mysterious man, things start to unravel as people go missing. »

Catharine Hardwicke, Evan Rachel Wood: Erotic Thriller Plush

4 February 2012 2:47 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Production designer-turned-director Catherine Hardwicke, who hit the big time following the worldwide success of the first Twilight movie, may be reteaming with her Thirteen star Evan Rachel Wood in the erotic thriller Plush, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Set in the L.A. music world, Plush was written by Hardwicke and Artie Nelson. Both Hardwicke and Wood are officially attached to project, which will be hawked to prospective foreign buyers at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival's European Film Market beginning next week. Thirteen created quite a buzz when it came out in 2003, but Hardwicke's first — and to date only — major commercial hit has been Twilight, which turned Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson into movie stars. Starring Amanda Seyfried, last year's Red Riding Hood was a critical and box-office disappointment. Hardwicke is currently working on Knock-Out, the story of Swedish boxer Bosse Högberg and his relationship with cabaret singer Anita Lindblom. »

Mathieu Kassovitz Out, Gad Elmaleh In For Costa-Gavras' 'Le Capital'

17 January 2012 7:58 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

First pegged for Vincent Cassel, then lined up for Mathieu Kassovitz, director Costa-Gavras continues to tinker with his lead for "Le Capital," and this might be the most intriguing change yet. French comic acting star Gad Elmaleh -- likely best known to U.S. audiences as the detective in "Midnight In Paris" or for Ben Salaad in "The Adventures Of Tintin" -- will take the lead in "Le Capital," joining the long attached Gabriel Byrne. Based on the novel by Stéphane Osmont -- with further inspiration from the essay "Total Capitalism" by former Credit Lyonnais president Jean Peyrelevade -- the film is a harsh look at the banking system with Elmaleh set to play Marc Tourneuil, the head of Europe's Phoenix Bank who is facing a hostile takeover from U.S. hedge fund companies, while making a play to acquire a debt-laden Japanese bank. It's a rare dramatic turn for »
