Duets’ Robin Thicke Judges Pop’s Weirdest Pairings

24 May 2012 1:45 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

R&B singer-songwriter Robin Thicke traveled across the country to find potential singing partners for Duets, this year's 53rd singing competition premiering on ABC tonight. In honor of the occasion, we asked Thicke, whose parents Alan Thicke and Gloria Loring wrote and sang the themes for Diff’rent Strokes and The Facts of Life, to weigh in on some of pop's strangest pairings. "Once you have two energies, it's all about how the energies come together, you know? It could be explosive or completely boring," he says. And no, we didn't ask him about "Ebony and Ivory" because, really, hasn't it all been said?Bone Thugs-n-Harmony decided to sample Phil Collins's “Take Me Home” for their 2003 single “Home.” Collins was so cool with it, he sang the chorus himself, earning him the nickname Chrome Bone from the group. Robin’s Response: He hasn’t heard it. “I like Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. »

For this week’s Must Read, I don’t know if this is a one-off or a series, but I hope it’s a continuing series. Mike Plante of Cinemad has posted up an article from the old print version of the online zine — and it’s a doozy! Stan Brakhage meets Godfrey Reggio!I don’t know about anybody else, but I’m completely digging BadAzz MoFo’s poster hall of fame series of posts. Here’s a great one for The Land That Time Forgot and The People That Time Forgot, movies most people have probably forgotten since they suck so bad. Also, Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity, which apparently isn’t as sleazy as it sounds.Donna k. gushes over Troy, NY’s Empac again and perhaps for the last time.Migrating Forms is going on right now and there were lots of write-ups about the films and filmmakers, »

30 ads where music made the difference – and why agencies should think of music first, not last

30 April 2012 4:14 PM, PDT | Encore Magazine | See recent Encore Magazine news »

Music can make an average ad great. So why, Robin Hicks asks, is music the last thing a creative thinks about when writing an ad?

My favourite TV ad of the year so far is the Let Yourself Go spot for Kangaroo Island.

When it didn’t win Mumbrella’s Ad of the Month for March (it came third) I felt aggrieved for the agency that made it. But less so a week later when it emerged that the agency had paid celebrities to tweet nice things about its work.

Let Yourself Go is a stunning spot with lots of pretty images. But it would probably have had a similar effect on me if I’d watched a blank screen for 60 seconds.

John Baker of Adelaide ad agency Kwp!, which made the ad, told me that the music (Rise by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder) “is 50% of the communication”. For me, »

2012 Migrating Forms: Official Lineup

26 April 2012 10:23 AM, PDT | Bad Lit | See recent Bad Lit news »

The fourth annual Migrating Forms media festival, which will run May 11-20 at the Anthology Film Archives in NYC, is a compelling mix of political films, pop culture explorations, ethnographic exposés and collections of new media art.

The fest begins and ends with political films directed and curated by Eric Baudelaire. His latest work, The Anabasis of May and Fusako Shigenobu, Masao Adachi and 27 Years without Images, opens the festival on May 11; while a pair of films – Masao Adachi & Kôji Wakamatsu’s Red Army/Pflp: Declaration of World War and The Dziga Vertov Group’s Ici et Ailleurs closes it on May 20.

Some of the special events sprinkled throughout the event include Ed Halter‘s survey of faux experimental films made for mainstream movies and TV shows that should prove to be an amazingly entertaining and enlightening discussion; a retrospective of the highly influential animation by Chuck Jones; the interactive »

One Man's Incredible 'Newsies' Tribute

26 April 2012 4:37 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Nick Pitera is known in the world of viral videos for his ridiculous vocal range and covers of wildly popular artists and songs like Whitney Houston, Phil Collins and Justin Beiber. More appropriately, the Pixar animator is also known for his more theatrical covers like "A Whole New World" from Disney's "Aladdin."

His most recent contribution, "One Man Newsies: Disney's Newsies Broadway Medley," pays tribute to Disney's Broadway musical "Newsies." This guy's talent is astonishing and "One Man Newsies: Disney's Newsies Broadway Medley" is yet another example of it. The timely release covers songs from the musical in a tiled screen with ten Piteras contributing to a different vocal role.

In a discussion of the finer aspects of the recently released romantic drama "The Lucky One" with stars Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling, one of the most entertaining subjects to come up revolved around prolific romance author Nicholas Sparks, author of the novel upon which the film is based. Specifically, we wondered whether Efron and Schilling had ever experienced any Sparks-like fantasy romance scenarios in real life.

"I'm sure I've said some of those lines," Efron admitted to MTV News. "They're probably worse — not as good as the ones [Sparks has] written, but they were excellent in the moment."

"I'm sure they were great," Schilling offered. "I'm sure they worked in the moment."

"I feel like they were good," Efron said with a smile.

"It's about the right moment," Schilling added, referring to »

Thq could make one game…to rule them all

19 April 2012 2:30 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

I just slipped an ace up their sleeve

It is no trade secret that Thq is in trouble right now.  Studio closures, massive layoffs and the threat of being delisted from the stock exchange have put Thq on notice and they need to do something soon to stay in the game.  Just doing something normal will not save the company from the brink of administration.  Something crazy but profitable must be done and boy do I have just the idea for them, one game to rule them all (for you curious folk, not Lotr related).

What is one of, if not the most popular trend in gaming?  Most of you will think of First Person Shooters and that is fine, but the one I am thinking of is HD Collections.  Everyone and their mothers are putting out some sort of compilation these days, but they are usually a series of some sort. »

'The Voice': Jesse Campbell voted best of Top 16 by Digital Spy users

17 April 2012 4:59 PM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Jesse Campbell has been voted the best act of The Voice's Top 16 so far. The 42-year-old performed a moving rendition of Beyoncé's 'Halo' during Monday night's first live quarter final show, pulling in 33.6%. However, his popularity did not hold with his coach Christina Aguilera, who sent him home during the broadcast's instant elimination. In second place was Lindsey Pavao, whose unique take on Katy Perry's 'Part of Me' earned her 15.8% of reader votes. Slightly less impressive were Jermaine Paul, who got 13% for his cover of Phil Collins's 'Against All Odds', and Ashley de la Rosa, whose version of Jewel's 'Foolish Games' brought in 11.3%. The Voice Recap: A Song of Nice and Dire

17 April 2012 6:38 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Week 1 of The Voice‘s Season 2 Quarterfinals closely paralleled a pivotal scene in Game of Thrones‘ inaugural season: What appeared to be a character central to the action had his head unceremoniously detached and placed on a spike as the crowd — or at least the three people in my living room — roared approval. The only thing missing was Christina Aguilera emerging naked from the funeral pyre of her Bionic album, its jewel case having hatched into a tiny, fire-breathing dragon.

Of course, there were a few moments where the episode began to resemble the kind of deranged hootenanny described during »

"The Voice" Live Round: Is Adam Levine the Weakest Link?

17 April 2012 5:40 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

There's only one thing more unsettling than watching two out of eight competitors on last night's The Voice receive surprise eliminations at episode's end: watching Adam Levine mumble and stutter for approximately 30 hours before giving simple criticisms. Bad news, everyone: Adam is suddenly the worst! His nervous preambles are so damn time-consuming! Last week I realized that Christina Aguilera often shares valuable insight with the contestants (even if she can't remember their names, as was the case with the wrongfully dismissed Tony Vincent), and now I'm realizing a far scarier fact -- that Adam Levine is worried about not seeming nice. What could be a more disgusting fear? He should focus his phobia on Xtina's stagewear, which -- during her performance of "Stronger" on The Voice stage -- resembled Paula Abdul's freakish, bedazzled ensemble from her performance of "Vibeology" at the '91 Video Music Awards.

Well, that was rough. We thought this was just a performance night, but Team Christina and Team Blake each lost another member on "The Voice" (Mondays at 8 p.m. Et and Tuesdays at 9 p.m. Et on NBC) tonight in a very unexpected instant elimination.

The show kicked off with Carson revealing that both Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton will have to say goodbye to one team member at the end of the two-hour episode. Christina is "really upset right now" and Blake says, "If I knew who to kick for this, I would kick 'em."

Though his team is not in the hot seat this week, Cee Lo Green seems to have had no idea about the instant boot twist until the cameras starting rolling. Adam Levine, however, likes that the coadges have the control. »

Recently, 20th Century Fox flew myself and a couple of other journalists out to L.A. to check out Family Guy Online, the 3D Mmo based on the series. Besides getting some hands-on time with the game, Fox representatives as well as studio heads from A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. and Roadhouse Interactive, the developers behind the game, walked us through some of the particulars of bringing Quahog to the PC.

What follows is the first installment of three, where the folks behind the game broke down what the vision was for Family Guy Online and what it meant to them to make players citizens of virtual Quahog.

Gary Rosenfeld, Sr. VP Fox Interactive explained that one of the goals of the game was attempting to create a "mid-core" title that creates the Family Guy experience for casual gamers while still delivering a strong Mmo experience. He touted »

Lily Collins interview: I'm not doing this for fame

Growing up the daughter of a pop star, the actor was always going to be in the spotlight. Here she talks about her rapid Hollywood rise – and why she'd never have been happy as a socialite

Lily Collins, actor and daughter of Genesis frontman Phil, settles among the dark woods and sinking velvets of an annoyingly hip hotel in Paris and sighs, then apologises immediately. She has flown here straight from the set of her next film – Writers, in which she stars alongside Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly – and there was no direct flight from North Carolina. Still, if the 23-year-old is jetlagged she doesn't look it. In the flesh she's all porcelain skin, raven hair and red lips – an excellent embodiment of Snow White if ever you saw one. Which is just as well, because Mirror Mirror, the film whose premiere she is attending, sees her play a ballsy, »
