Willem Dafoe has joined the cast of John Carter of Mars, Disney's adaptation of the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs book series.
The 53-year-old is best known to sci-fi/superhero fans as the villainous Green Goblin in the Spider-Man films and was reportedly considered for the role of the Joker in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film.
John Carter of Mars tells the story of a Civil War soldier mysteriously transported to the red planet where warring races vie for control.
Dafoe will play Tars Tarkas, a leader of the Thark race who knows the only way his people can survive is if they turn away from war.
He joins fellow Spider-Man actor Thomas Haden Church, who is in an as-yet-unspecified "dramatic role".
Two actors from X-Men Origins: Wolverine are also in the film. Taylor Kitsch is in the title role while Lynn Collins plays Martian princess Dejah Thoris.

Another casting announcement for the upcoming film adaptation of John Carter of Mars was released today, adding Willem Dafoe’s name to the cast.
Last month we heard the first big casting decisions for the movie which included Canadian actor Taylor Kitsch alongside Lynn Collins (both of whom were a part of X-Men Origins: Wolverine earlier this summer) as the leads.
Shortly after that, Thomas Haden Church openly revealed in a video interview that he’d probably be playing a “very dramatic role” in John Carter of Mars which has yet to be confirmed.
Dafoe will be playing the role of Tars Tarkas, a green Martian who eventually befriends the protagonist, John Carter, after an unfriendly beginning to their relationship. Tarkas is a warrior and leader of his people and a very unique one at that because he, against the laws and norms of his society, shows compassion and sympathy,

Willem Dafoe is the latest actor to join Andew Stanton's big screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars. Dafoe will play the role of Tars Tarkas, a brutal and mirthless green Martian warrior, who possesses the ability to feel love and empathy, an unusual characteristic among his savage race. The newly arrived Earth man John Carter develops an alliance with Tarkas after learning his secret. The film is expected to be the first of a possible trilogy, and considering Tarkas fights alongside Carter through the entire series of books, Dafoe likely signed on or has options for sequels. Dafoe joins Lynn Collins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, True Blood) and Taylor Kitsch (Wolverine, Friday Night Lights) in the Walt Disney Pictures production. Still no mention of Thomas Haden Church who last month revealed publicly that he had signed on to the film for a "very dramatic role." Is

Thomas Haden Church has come a long way since “George of the Jungle.” After doing a few excellent dramatic films including “Sideways” and “Smart People,” Thomas decided to show his funny side in “Imagine That.” He dropped by the Reel Talk studio to chat with Jeffrey about working with Eddie Murphy in the Disney comedy and to talk about some of his upcoming projects like “Easy A” and even a little film called “John Carter of Mars!”

Today's one-post-that-really-ought-to-be-two-posts's theme is gratuitous nudity.
Let's start with John Carter of Mars. My disappointment that the film would not be a Pixar animated effort (I was quite excited at the prospect of a 'toon that wasn't for little children and for Pixar to spread their current excellence into other genres) has been somewhat tempered knowing that Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo) will be trying his hand at live action (interesting). I like Taylor Kitsch who'll be playing the titular role. Anybody who watches Friday Night Lights knows that there's a nice unforced depth to his acting that you couldn't really see in his cameo in Wolverine. Lynn Collins (also from Wolverine) will play his eventual betrothed Dejah Thoris. Coming Soon reports that Thomas Haden Church may be appearing in the film as well. Since the role is supposed to be very dramatic and Church is a "name" I'm assuming we're talking about a substantial role.

The poster for “Cold Souls” is just as freaky as its plot. Paul Giamatti stars as an actor who decides to store some of his soul so he can really get into a new role. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and many likened it to “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Being John Malkovich.” Check out this new poster from Cinematical.
Thomas Haden Church may have dropped by the Reel Talk set to talk “Imagine That,” but he had something else on his mind: “John Carter of Mars.” During his interview with Jeffrey Thc revealed he probably will be joining Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins on the set of the Disney film about Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “A Princess of Mars.” Click here to see the video!

Looks like things are finally starting to move forward on Disney's long-gestating John Carter of Mars, with the first two major casting announcements coming this week and another rumoured addition possibly to follow. Some may remember that this project went through various producers and directors over the years, most recently billed as potentially being Pixar's first ever live-action film. There was a point when some thought that Brad Bird might direct, but since then Andrew Stanton (Wall-e, Finding Nemo) has taken over the reins (although Pixar itself will not be involved). This week The Hollywood Reporter [1] confirmed that Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will star as the film's protagonist John Carter, an American Civil War veteran who is transported to a dying planet Mars. Based on the first in a series of pulp novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs from the early 1900s, the movie finds John Carter

Rising star Taylor Kitsch, who found fame with under-appreciated West Texas Football Drama “Friday Night Lights” and “Wolverine” Origins”, has signed on with Disney to star as the lead in a big budget adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series “John Carter of Mars”.
Kitsch will play Civil War vet John Carter, who is transported to Mars where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are ‘12-foot tall green barbarians’. Taylor’s “Wolverine: Origins” cast mate Lynn Collins (”True Blood”) has been cast as the Princess character, Dejah Thoris.

It Looks like the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series John Carter of Mars is finally going to be turned into a movie following more than seven decades of aborted missions.
Taylor Kitsch, who played Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Lynn Collins, who starred alongside him as Kayla Silverfox, have now signed on for the lead roles in the Disney film adaptation.
Kitsch will play the title character, beating off competition from other names including Jon Hamm and Josh Duhamel, while Collins has been cast as Martian princess Dejah Thoris.
The casting was announced by The Hollywood Reporter and, in addition, Thomas Haden Church (who played Sandman in Spider-Man 3) has told Reel Talk he is in talks for a part in the movie.
The movie will be directed by Andrew Stanton, who wrote the script with Mark Andrews. In April, American author Mark Chabon was hired to rework the screenplay,

While the confirmation on the joining of Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins for "John Carter of Mars" is still fresh in mind, another casting report is coming out and it involves Thomas Haden Church. During a recent chat with Jeffrey Lyons on "Reel Talk" for "Imagine That", the Sandman of "Spider-Man 3" hinted on the potential chance he is going to be in the sci-fi fantasy.
Asked about his future movie project, Hayden Church gushed that he might star in the Andrew Stanton-directed movie. "I'm probably going to do a huge science fiction drama at Disney called John Carter Of Mars and that's a very dramatic role," so the 48-year-old claimed. It is still unclear what character he eyes to play, but it should be noted that the actor is yet to be officially cast.

This weekend we reported on Walt Disney Pictures' recent announcement that Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins have been cast in the upcoming live-action fantasy epic John Carter of Mars, to be directed by Wall•E helmer Andrew Stanton.
Now, during a conversation at ReelTalkTV, actor Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3) revealed to critic Jeffrey Lyons that he is in talks to join the film as well.
"I'm probably going to do a huge science fiction drama at Disney called 'John Carter of Mars' and that's a very dramatic role," Church said.
Created by Edgar Rice Burroughs—John Carter first appeared in 1911's "A Princess of Mars", the first Burroughs novel set on the fictionalized version of Mars that the author dubbed 'Barsoom'.
In the book, Carter is a Virginian who served as a captain in the American Civil War, and strikes it rich by finding gold in Arizona after the end of hostilities.

The news avalanche is getting started on Disney's John Carter of Mars, as the production prepares to set up in Utah this fall, and Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins prepare for their starring roles in Wall-e director Andrew Stanton's adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs series. No other casting announcements have been made, but over the weekend Thomas Haden Church told Jeffrey Lyons on Reel Talk TV (spotted by Coming Soon) that he's preparing to take a role in the film starting this spring. What will the role be? How big will it be? All we know is that Church is calling it "a very dramatic role," so I imagine he's more than just some goofy sidekick. Any John Carter experts out there want to speculate? Or would you rather just join me in gratitude that the super-talented Church is getting a role in a movie better than the

During a recent discussion with Jeffrey Lyons on Reel Talk Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3, Sideways) let it be known that he is most likely going to be in John Carter of Mars. Here is what he had to say:
"I probably am going to do a huge science fiction drama at Disney called John Carter of Mars in the spring and that's a very dramatic role." Church stated.
Created by Edgar Rice Burroughs - John Carter first appeared in 1911's "A Princess of Mars," the first Burroughs novel set on the fictionalized version of Mars.
Carter encounters both formidable alien creatures resembling the beasts of ancient myth and various humanoids and finds his true calling in life as a warrior-savior of the planet's inhabitants. He wins the hand of Martian princess Dejah Thoris of Helium.
John Carter of Mars is slated to come to theaters in 2012 from Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios.

It’s just your average Marvel character party this week. Sandman, Gambit and Silver Fox who were featured in Spider-Man 3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine respectively will probably be hanging out on Mars come November.
It appears that Thomas Haden Church will likely be playing a part in John Carter of Mars, the upcoming film adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic series of science fiction novels. If confirmed, Church will be joining Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins who were just announced to be playing the lead roles in the movie.
According to Thomas Haden Church in a video interview with Reel Talk, he had this to say in response to a question about picking and choosing projects back and forth between dramatic roles and comedic ones:
“I’m probably going to do a huge science fiction drama at Disney called ‘John Carter of Mars’ and that’s a very dramatic role”
Sounds good to me.

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins have been cast in Disney’s comic book adaptation of John Carter of Mars. Collins and Kitsch were recently seen together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Silverfox and Gambit, but perhaps most notable about the project is its director. Andrew Stanton is making his live-action feature debut after helming Pixar favorites Finding Nemo and Wall-e.
Thomas Haden Church also says he’s a part of the film, according to an interview on ReelTalk with the other, less handsome Jeffrey Lyons. Church didn’t say which part, but called it a “very dramatic role.”
The movie is based on a series of 11 novels featuring John Carter (played by Kitsch) from 1912 through 1964 by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It centers on Civil War veteran who seemingly dies and is transported to another physical body on the planet Mars. Because of the gravity difference, John Carter is stronger than the natives,

We've got another bit of casting news related to Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars to reveal today. Yesterday it was announced that Wolverine co-stars Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins were cast in the Disney production as the two lead actors. Now today we also learn that Thomas Haden Church might be joining as well. Church appeared on Jeffrey Lyons' show ReelTalk to talk about appearing in Imagine That. When asked about his variety of roles, both comedies and dramas, Church said, "I'm probably going to do a huge science fiction drama at Disney called John Carter of Mars in the spring and that's a very dramatic role." Church didn't say what role he would be playing, so we don't exactly know what his involvement is, but it's good to have him on-board anyway. Although I didn't see much in either performance that screamed "More! Now!," Taylor Kitsch (Gambit) and Lynn Collins (Kayla Silverfox) from X-Men Origins: Wolverine will join forces again on Disney's John Carter of Mars, with The Hollywood Reporter indicating that Kitsch is set for the title role.
John Carter will be the first live-action film for Wall-e director Andrew Stanton. He joins Brad Bird as Pixar Best Animated-winning directors moving into the realm of flesh and blood actors and location shooting; Bird is currently developing the equally ambitious 1906. Elsewhere, Thomas Haden Church tells Reel Talk that he's joining the cast, as well.
