Charlize Theron Nudges into Comedy with 'Murder Mystery'

13 June 2012 1:41 PM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Charlize Theron has done it all ... almost. Sci-fi? See "Prometheus." Serial killer drama? Check out her Oscar fodder "Monster." Action blast? Yep, "Snow White and the Huntsman." You get the gist.

The one area she's not really stretched her oh-so-long legs in yet is the comedy scene.

Sure, she had that guest role in "Arrested Development," and she led up last year's dark comedy hit "Young Adult," but the notoriously foul-mouthed thesp hasn't gotten to truly show off her funny bone just yet. And we've seen how funny she can be, so now's as good a time as any.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lady Theron is in talks to star in a comedic whodunnit called "Murder Mystery," a movie about a honeymooning couple fingered in a murder case. The story is supposedly "an affectionate deconstruction of an Agatha Christie-style thriller."

Sounds like some kind of cross between "Date Night" and "Clue. »

Theron May Be Caught In A Murder Mystery

13 June 2012 12:59 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

She’s currently dominating our screens as ice queens Ravenna (in Snow White And The Huntsman) and Meredith Vickers (in Prometheus), but Charlize Theron could soon be wrapped up in even more dodgy dealings. She’s in talks to star in Murder Mystery for director John Madden. When and if the movie goes ahead, Theron would play the female half of an American couple enjoying their honeymoon when they become implicated in a murder they witness. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it’s “an affectionate deconstruction of an Agatha Christie-style thriller.”Despite the seemingly compelling concept, the movie has been stuck wandering through development limbo for a few years now, after it was originally set up at Disney. A couple of years ago, indie company Tower Hill rescued it from turnaround and hired Marley director Kevin Macdonald to tackle the shot-calling chores. But it lingered on, and now The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel »

Charlize Theron Gets Caught In A 'Murder Mystery' For John Madden Penned By 'Zodiac' Scribe James Vanderbilt

13 June 2012 12:40 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It's interesting to watch how fortunes change. For a while, it looked like John Madden would never be able to match the critical and commercial acclaim of "Shakespeare In Love," with a string of ill-received and underperforming films like "Proof," "Killshot" and "The Debt." Which brings us to 2012. Madden is back on top with "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," which has brought in over $110 million worldwide, so no surprise he's now attached to a film with one of the hottest -- literally and figuratively -- actresses of the moment.

While at one time it had Kevin Macdonald attached, Madden will helm "Murdery Mystery" with Theron set to co-star and co-produce the film penned by "Zodiac" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" writer James Vanderbilt. The comedy mystery follows an American couple on honeymoon in Europe who have to go on the run after witnessing and being accused of murder, and are drawn »

Charlize Theron May Solve John Madden’s ‘Murder Mystery’

13 June 2012 12:30 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

If there is one star of June, it’s probably Mark Duplass with three different films seeing a release (and yet another in July). But the runner-up is likely Charlize Theron, with her off-the-charts silly role in Snow White and the Huntsman and the smartest gal on the ship in Prometheus. She’s now looking to her next project and THR has the details.

The actress has entered talks to join the next film from Shakespeare in Love director John Madden, who is coming off last year’s The Debt and this spring’s runaway hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The film, previously attached to director Kevin Macdonald (State of Play, The Last King of Scotland) is titled Murder Mystery, which seems to indicate a tongue-in-cheek nature, and it’s described as “a comedy whodunit.” Best of all it’s scripted by the uber-talented James Vanderbilt who undid the »

Hot off the success of his winsome comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which has already earned more than $113 million worldwide, director John Madden has been set to helm Endgame Entertainment's Murder Mystery. Penned by Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt, the film is said to be "an affectionate deconstruction of an Agatha Christie-style thriller," aiming to blend comedy, action and mystery conventions into a winsome adventure following an American couple abroad who witness a murder while honeymooning abroad, and then becomes entangled in its aftermath. THR reports Charlize Theron, who is currently in box office stunners Prometheus and Snow White and the Huntsman, has entered into negations to join the project as its female lead. Though only in talks, it seems certain Theron will sign on, as she's already lined up to co-produce the picture. And this is great news for comedy fans as the Oscar-winner who made us all »

Charlize Theron in Talks to Star in John Madden’s Murder Mystery

13 June 2012 12:23 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Hot off a killer past 18 months with darker turns in Young Adult, Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus, Oscar winner Charlize Theron is looking to do something a bit lighter in tone.  THR reports that Theron is in talks to star in director John Madden’s (Shakespeare in Love) comedy whodunit Murder Mystery.  The project, written by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man), has actually been in development for several years with State of Play director Kevin Macdonald attached to helm at one point.  Hit the jump for more. Per THR, the story for Murder Mystery concerns a couple on their honeymoon who are implicated in a murder they witnessed and is described as “an affectionate deconstruction of an Agatha Christie-style thriller.”  Theron recently stretched her darkly comedic chops in Young Adult, and if you’ve seen her in interviews it’s obvious that the actress has a swell sense of humor. »

"Mad Men" Fabulous Quotient: Finally, a Finale with Nudity!

11 June 2012 6:39 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Uh. So.

I can't really call last night's Mad Men finale an anticlimax, because none of the miserable characters' arcs were building toward anything monumental. Or interesting. Or urgent. Hell, even Megan's outfits have been lackluster lately, and you know I think she's the swanky-ass Emma Peel of this shebang. I'd watch a full season of Megan trying on headbands as a Junior Vasquez remix of "Zou Bisou Bisou" played on loop. In the season finale, she'd throw the headband at Sally and opt for a Funny Girl bob. Fyi.

The main mystery of season five, the incessant "hanging"/"suicide" motif, was resolved last week with shady Lane's death, so I really should be Ok with the fact that Matthew Weiner treated the show's fifth season finale as a quiet coda, right? Wrong, yo. I was annoyed. The finale was a perfect microcosm of what's wrong with season five: We didn't get enough of anybody. »

Christopher Challis

Creative cinematographer and a key member of the Powell-Pressburger movie production team

Although the cinematographer Christopher Challis, who has died aged 93, was an essential member of the Archers production company of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, he joined them as director of photography at the time of their decline. However, he worked on more of the great British writing-directing team's films than any other cinematographer. These eccentric, extravagant, intelligent and witty fantasies went against the British realist tradition, allowing more scope for a creative cinematographer such as Challis. The sensuous use of Technicolor and flamboyant sets and designs made them closer to the MGM world of Vincente Minnelli and of Stanley Donen, who used Challis on six of his films.

Perhaps Challis's finest achievement was on Powell and Pressburger's The Tales of Hoffmann (1951) which, as he explained, had "no optical effects or tricks. It was all edited in »
