'Family Ties' to be reimagined as stage play
What’s old is new again. Or at least prime for a reboot of some sort. Playbill.com is reporting that Family Ties, the sitcom that turned Michael J. Fox into a household name, is being turned into a stage play. Araca Group, the production company behind such well known plays as Wicked and Book of Mormon, will lead the project. They’ve already signed on Kleban Award winner Daniel Goldstein to write the script. The Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning sitcom, which ran on NBC from 1982-89, centers on former hippies (Michael Gross, Meredith Baxter) and their experiences raising their family in suburbia. Fox played their son Alex, a young Republican. Justine Batemen and Tina Yothers were cast as the two daughters. Later in the show’s run, the family had another child, Andrew (Brian Bonsall). “Family Ties is a timeless comedy featuring a close-knit American family with vastly differing interests and politics,

There's a Depth to "Family Ties" Most Sitcoms Avoid

As CBS continues to rollout their extensive TV series of past and present on DVD, we get the seventh of final season of Family Ties. This beloved 80s sitcom was hugely popular in its day and its resonances can still be felt today. While much of the style of the series (and costuming) is inherently dated, the humor and content of the show remain in tact, making this a very enjoyable show to watch.

In this final season, the Keaton family faces some emotional turmoil early on as patriarch Steven (Michael Gross) suffers a heart attack. Matriarch Elyse (Meredith Baxter Birney) must rally and keep the family strong in the 3-part episode “Heartstrings” as Steven undergoes heart surgery. In the latter half of the season, the writers set up the futures for the Keaton children. Spunky Jennifer (Tina Yothers) becomes a hardcore environmentalist. Ditzy Mallory (Justine Bateman) breaks into the fashion world with her designs.

Sixth Time's The Charm For "Family Ties"

The 80s were a great time for television. Family sitcoms in particular dominated the many channels’ lineups. One such family was the Keatons and they had welcome home in the popular NBC show Family Ties. The program was your typical half hour romp with smart writing and strong performances. The show lasted a respectable seven seasons and for purposes of this review, emphasis shall be placed on the season six DVD.

Family Ties revolves around a pretty typical family in the 1980s. Elyse (Meredith Baxter) and Steven Keaton (Michael Gross) are former hippies who are now married. They have an eclectic group of kids in conservative Alex (Michael J. Fox), ditzy Mallory (Justine Bateman), sarcastic Jennifer (Tina Yothers) and cute as a button youngin Andrew (Brian Bonsall). Every episode focuses on a particular problem and by the end of the episode is usually solved unless it’s a cliffhanger.

'What Not To Wear': Tina Yothers Needs To Ditch The Black

'What Not To Wear': Tina Yothers Needs To Ditch The Black
Tina Yothers described herself as the everygirl that teens could relate to during her appearance on "What Not to Wear." She was the kid who was a little oveweight, or struggling with acne during her run on "Family Ties." And it was during those formative years on the show that she started to gravitate toward black for her wardrobe. Now, it seems to be all she wears.

Stacy London and Clinton Kelly noticed that she didn't really seem to have a style, unless covering up in large clothing is a style.

"I spent my life, my childhood on television with the stylist and the wardrobe department. I just never grabbed on to any particular look," Yothers admitted.

Though she didn't know it was coming, after watching footage of herself and talking about her style, Yothers knew it was time for something different. So she embraced the process and even the

Tina Yothers is getting a makeover, courtesy of "What Not To Wear" this week.

The former child actress, best known as Jennifer Keaton on "Family Ties," will get the full treatment from TLC style gurus Stacy London and Clinton Kelly on the Thurs., Feb. 28 episode. HuffPost TV has the first look (above) at Yothers talking about how her adorkable style went to such dark extremes. Literally.

When Yothers' husband went through her closet, he showed Stacy and Clinton that every she wears is black, from her hair to her t-shirts to her flip flops.

"Everyone knows I wear black," Yothers told Stacy and Clinton in the clip above. "I've done the black thing for a very long time, even back on 'Family Ties.' Michael J. Fox used to call me Johnny Cash."

Yothers also said that she was only 8-years-old when she started on "Family Ties." "I was going

By Carson Blackwelder

It’s the most wonderful time of the year — except for TV. During a large part of December, our TV options are as disappointing as coal in a stocking, as several shows hibernate until January.

We here at ScottFeinberg.com don’t want you to be without entertainment as you anxiously await the return of your favorite series (especially with in-laws visiting!), so here are seven hidden gems to check out this winter hiatus:

7. ABC’s Nashville catch-up (Jan. 2 at 10 p.m. Est)

I just had to sneak this one onto the list. Although Nashville isn’t taking the stage again until Jan. 9, ABC is offering fans an opportunity to catch up on all the drama, tunes and steamy romances.

“Nashville: The Whole Story” will highlight the intersecting tales of country legend Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton) and rising star Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) as they

'Celebrity Wife Swap': Remembering Tina Yothers' best comebacks as Jennifer Keaton

'Celebrity Wife Swap': Remembering Tina Yothers' best comebacks as Jennifer Keaton
Tina Yothers’ wigged-out appearance on last night’s Celebrity Wife Swap has set the Internet afire. Her impromptu responses (“there’s a circus under here!”) to Niecy Nash’s attempt to glam her up with spangle pants and fur vests were hilarious, but you may recall that Yothers comes by a wisecrack easily. Three decades ago this year, she played Family Ties’ precociously wry youngest sister Jennifer Keaton. Here are a few of Jennifer’s best comebacks.

Jennifer Keaton: What’s impetuous?

Steven Keaton : Well, uh. That’s when you do something without thinking it through.

Tina Yothers and Niecy Nash 'Celebrity Wife Swap': What did you think?

The fun part of ABC's new series "Celebrity Wife Swap" is taking the fish out of water and seeing how they do. In Tuesday's (Jan. 17) episode, "Family Ties" star Tina Yothers swapped out with comic Niecy Nash. And the results were probably exactly what producers hoped for.

Yothers, the former teen star, has left entertainment and settled into a simple life on the fringes of suburbia. Nash, on the other hand, is a busy actress and prefers the glamor of Hollywood. But after the swap, they both struggle with their new lives.

While taking in a day at the spa, a clearly uncomfortable Yothers explains, "I'm happy in my flip flops...this whole Hollywood thing and the pampering, it's just not for me." This matter becomes plainly evident when, after her make over, she takes a tumble while wearing high heels.

The always-primped Nash fares about the same, that is to say awkwardly.

'Celebrity Wife Swap': Tina Yothers Gets Niecy Nash Makeover

'Celebrity Wife Swap': Tina Yothers Gets Niecy Nash Makeover
It was a case of city celebrity meets country celebrity on "Celebrity Wife Swap" (Tue., 9 p.m. Est on ABC) this week. Niecy Nash brought her self-proclaimed diva personality out to the country where Tina Yothers lived a more relaxed country lifestyle. She was completely out of sorts trying to go camping with the family. While she was willing to try her hand at fishing and eating outdoors, she drew the line at actually sleeping outside. So she called a cab and headed for a hotel.

Yothers was just as overwhelmed in Nash's more glamorous world. "I feel like I have a rat on my head," she said while getting styled with a wig. After a few failed makeover attempts in the wardrobe department, she was fitted with tight jeans and a look that wasn't as outrageous.

"I'm happy in my flip-flops," she said. "This whole Hollywood thing and the pampering,
