Getting under the skin of Anaconda

Nineties giant snake movie Anaconda comes under James's microscope. Could it be more than just another scaly B-movie?

"You don't know shit about the shit we're in here!" Gary Dixon (Owen Wilson) in Anaconda. That sentence pretty accurately sums up most people's appreciation of both the movie Anaconda, life in general and the state of the Universe. When you've finished reading this article, you will know some shit.

Do you remember Anaconda? The 1997 killer snake film starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube and Jon Voight? It had the tagline "When you can't breathe you can't scream"? It got nominated for six Razzies but, in spite of such ignominy, went on to become a cult hit and spawned three sequels?

Until a couple of weeks ago I didn't remember Anaconda because I'd never seen it. Somehow this pleasure had passed me by, and it existed as a sizeable hole in my pop

Review: Sharknado 2: The Next One

Last year’s Anthony C. Ferrante’s Sharknado took the world by storm, sparking an internet sensation and catapulting the B-movie into a household name, with everything from toys to kids’ pajamas being sold to help cash in on the instant pop culture phenomenon. Almost immediately after its release, a sequel was in the works, and a year later: Sharknado 2: The Next One came, upping the ante on everything from celebrity cameos to gore and absurdity.

Taking place a year after the first film, Sharknado 2 finds the first film’s heroes, Fin and April, heading to a book tour to promote April’s book on how to survive a Sharknado. After giving fans a fun homage to both Airplane! (complete with a cameo by Robert Hays) and The Twilight Zone‘s ‘Nightmare At 20,000 Feet‘, the setting is switched from Los Angeles to New York, where everything is bigger and better.

Sharknado 2: The Second One – 14 Awesomely Ridiculous Moments

SyFy

In the lineage of movie sequels that outdid their predecessors, there’s The Godfather Part 2, Aliens, Terminator 2, The Dark Knight, and now…Sharknado 2: The Second One. Sharknado premiered on SyFy last July, and became an instant hit with audiences, aided by the fact that viewers were encouraged to Tweet about the movie as they watched it.

What was it that made the latest offering from The Asylum so eminently watchable? The gleefully silly, go-for-broke absurdity of it all, where nothing was outside the realm of possibilities, and the low $2 million budget didn’t stop them crafting some wild set-pieces, even if the effects were diabolical, the acting mostly terrible, and the central plot completely forgettable.

It was a charming movie, and the clear love with which it was made earned it a place in the hearts of cineastes the world over for its “so bad it’s good” quality,
