Occasionally, a movie villain will pause for a moment to deliver a brief story or anecdote. And often, these apparently incidental tales tell us a lot about an antagonist's state of mind, experiences or warped worldview.
We've compiled a selection of 20 here. Some of them are blackly funny. Many are disturbing. One or two are even moving. The first one's very strange. All of them bring something unique to each particular film in which they appear, and all of them are laced with a delicious hint of menace.

As more and more time passes, the chances of David Fincher returning to film The Girl Who Played With Fire look slimmer and slimmer. And even if Fincher didn't return to direct, the chances of Rooney Mara returning to reprise the role of Lisbeth Salander that she first realised in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo are looking slight.
"I don't think it's going to happen", Mara has now admitted. Chatting at an Oxfam benefit in New York, she said that "I'm sad never to do it again, but it just doesn't seem like it's in the cards. Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy of books introduced the world to hacker whiz Lisbeth Salander, who rose to prominence in the original adapted movie series. In that first trio of pics, Noomi Rapace played Salander, and was eager to pass on the torch to another actress for the U.S. remakes. Enter Rooney Mara, who confidently picked up the mantle for David Fincher’s 2011 remake – The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Sadly, that first stab at rebooting the material for American audiences flopped. Mostly a critical and financial failure, it seemed all hope was lost for igniting a sequel. Until, strangely enough, the project began to gather traction in 2013. Seven scribe Andrew Kevin Walker was enlisted to draft a script for the follow-up – The Girl Who Played With Fire – and late last year, Fincher himself suggested the franchise still had life.
