Streep at 60, a retrospective (June 11th - July 14th)
I wear body armor as I type this, for fear of your collective outrage but the time got away from me. We're jumping forward. You see, Streep's second act, those legend making years from 1981-1988, in which she morphed through one of cinema's all time hot streaks like some genetically enhanced superfreak chameleon, is too large a topic. I need more time with The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), Sophie's Choice (1982) and Silkwood (1983), in particular. Perhaps I should write a book. For disparate reasons all three are deserving of chapter length essays.
For now, some general observations about this time period and the first of Streep's collaborations with director Fred Schepisi (Plenty).
Chameleonidae Erotica
Streep's penchant for shape shifting, particularly in the vocal arena, is well known. Though many actors collect several character voices and accents in their life's work, the vocals became

Bright colors were all the rage at last night's Cfda Awards in NYC. Blake Lively and Ashley Olsen could not have looked more different in their pink and orange respectively, but both ladies embraced a love of color. Diane Kruger also stood out in red and black even without her best accessory Josh Jackson on her arm. A very baby-bump showing Heidi Klum, Kirsten Dunst and Kerry Washington went more metallic. What do you think about all the ladies at one of fashion's biggest nights - find out who they're wearing and Fab's love it or hate it polls! It wasn't just about the women though, Justin Timberlake and Taylor Lautner both suited up as did the newest box office sensation Bradley Cooper still glowing from the success of The Hangover. Tallulah Willis looked right at home with the fashionable crowd kicking off her Summer internship at Harper's Bazaar with style.

By now you've heard that Nicole Kidman will appear in Woody Allen's next untitled film (they're always untitled for a good while) due in 2010. It'll be his fourth film set in London and the cast currently includes Anthony Hopkins, Josh Brolin, Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts, and Antonio Banderas.
While the Kidman/Allen match might prove fascinating -- she loves real auteurs / he loves actresses with neurotic edge -- it also might be a big news item signifying nothing. Think of Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore starring in Everyone Says I Love You back in 1996. What's that, you say? You'd forgotten they were in that one. You're forgiven. See, they were major gets in the mid-90s but they proved to be far from the highlights of that film (Goldie Hawn easily won 'best in show' honors there). The media has a tendency to see every female casting decision made

Photo: Screen Actors Guild Awards® The winners at the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced tonight and it is a mixed bag as not one single movie won more than one award and Kate Winslet continued on her path to her first Oscar win. Winslet took home the Actor for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Reader, but didn't go home double-fisting as Meryl Streep took home her second SAG award with a win for her great performance in Doubt. Heath Ledger once again won for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight and his award was accepted by his co-star Gary Oldman who gave a short but sweet speech. The other motion picture acting award went to Sean Penn for Milk as he topped Mickey Rourke who won at the Golden Globes as the plot thickens on the way to the Oscars. Like Rourke at the Globes,

Tracey Ullman is about to shoot another season of her Showtime sketch show Tracey Ullman's State of the Union. She'll be traveling around the states to sample the variety of people, perhaps find some comic inspiration.
Tracey Ullman's State of the Union
"I.ve been to lots of places," she said. "I remember saying to Fox years ago that I wanted to go to Toledo, Ohio, I don.t want to just get La and New York. Yeah, there are big differences. I just like that there are good people everywhere. There are funny people. When I went around the country I would take Polaroids of people and keep them in books. How friendly everyone is? I like small TV stuff. Mind you I do see it as somebody who is going there that people know. To do the whole anonymous thing, to drive across America and be unknown, my voice gives me away.

I was kinda excited when I got an email from a Showtime representative offering me the opportunity to stream the entire first episode of Toni Collette’s new comedy series, The United States of Tara, here at FlickFilosopher.com. It wasn’t an exclusive deal or anything -- I wouldn’t have imagined I’d be flattered that way -- but I jumped on it for a few reasons. I love Collette, for one. For two, it’s another example of the coming covergence of TV and the Internet. This -- teasing viewers with entire episodes of a new show -- is surely a mere precursor to a series debuting online and staying there, never moving to cable or broadcast. Tara won’t appear in the tube till next Sunday, the 18th, and here it is today, right here at FlickFilosopher.com. But as you’ll see when you run the player,
