A long time in the making, Reach Me, from filmmaker/actor John Herzfeld brings ‘positive thinking’ and ‘self-help’ to the big screen. It stars a bevy of Herzfeld’s actor friends and friends of friends, including Sylvester Stallone, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Connolly.

Danny Trejo has become a versatile, and well liked action star with the unique ability to seamlessly transition between cheesy B flicks to summer blockbusters without loosing fan loyalty. Trejo is also equally comfortable taking minor or supporting roles as well as lead roles, and the fact that Danny Trejo’s name receives top billing definitely […]

I am partial to lists and the ranking of the greatest movies of all time, especially when broken down by genre. With over a hundred years worth of movies to choose from, it can sometimes be daunting to whittle a list down. Plus, any list is up for debate since folks don't always hold the same movies in the same regard. Take for instance this new list from the good folks at Time Out New York. Culled from over fifty "experts" including Danny Trejo, Zoe Bell, John »

Mexican mythology provides the inspiration for The Book of Life, a sunny and spirited animation that's as much about what happens after we leave this mortal coil. Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana and Diego Luna lend their voices, each in the corner of a love triangle that spans three beautifully realised worlds: the Land of the Living, the Land of the Remembered and the Land of the Forgotten.
At the centre of some cosmic turbulence is Manolo (Luna), the son of a bullfighter who is expected to follow in dad's footsteps, but Manolo would rather play his guitar and serenade the town beauty Maria (Saldana). Rivalling him for Maria's affections is best pal Joaquin (Tatum), a bit of a blowhard who »
The suit was filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court by Rodriguez and his affiliate companies against Sergei Bespalov, Marina Bespalov, Maddartico, Vrelonovama, Aldamisa Entertainment and SC2 Productions.
It alleged breach of contract and fraud. The suit seeks a jury trial and unspecified damages.
“In order to induce Plaintiffs to enter into agreements with various of the Defendants relating to the Pictures, Defendants, including, specifically, Sergei Bespalov, falsely assured and represented to Plaintiffs that Defendants had more than sufficient financial resources and cash flow – not only from and related to the Pictures, but also from other projects – to honor all of their financial obligations to Plaintiffs.”

Chicago – Unfortunately you can’t judge “The Book Of Life” by its cover. The movie draws on the fertile imagery of the Mexican “Day Of The Dead” to create its own animated world. The animation is excellent and the wooden characters seem to spring to life – but those performances are as wooden as a board.
Which also describes my feelings for most of this uninspired journey…bored.
The film doesn’t have the courage to go its own way, instead it uses the window dressing of its distinctive look to paper over a story that is firmly stuck in the material world of mediocrity. Trouble begins from the onset with an uninspired framing device involving grade school slackers touring a museum and learning about the Mexican cultural traditions – complete with a map showing Mexico with a giant bandito mustache. These modern characters seem to have been inspired by the »

Over the weekend I had a chance to speak with director Jorge Guiterrez about his new film "The Book of Life," which is also produced by Guillermo del Toro. The look of the film is inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos) celebrations.
"The Book of Life" is the journey of Manolo (Diego Luna), a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Rich with a fresh take on pop music favorites, "The Book of Life" encourages us to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future.
Here is what Guiterrez had to say about the film.
For me, when I first saw the film, I thought of it as elements of a video game. »

My kind of movie – it’s filled by a lot of stars and actor Tom Sizemore!
A motivational book written by a mysterious man (Tom Berenger) goes viral and quickly gains popularity, inspiring a group of people that includes a journalist (Kevin Connolly), his editor (Sylvester Stallone), a former inmate (Kyra Sedgwick), a hip-hop mogul (Nelly), an actor (Cary Elwes) and an undercover cop (Thomas Jane) to re-evaluate their choices and decisions by confronting their fears in hopes of creating more positive lives.

Wow. Fifteen years after Paul Thomas Anderson's valley opus Magnolia, we get the Millenium Entertainment take on Altman-esque sprawl with Reach Me. This film looks a bit out of its mind, but maybe it's in the service of some kind of mad genius. All I know is it doesn't look boring, even though it seems to be in search of a consistent tone (it oscillates wildly between serious pathos and comic relief). I will indeed be seeing it. Hit the jump for the Reach Me trailer and poster.
