Film Review: ‘Beta Test’

22 July 2016 7:12 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Conspiracy theorists obsessed with spinning false-flag scenarios may appreciate the stoking of their paranoia during “Beta Test,” a weirdly retro and energetically preposterous thriller about a video-game mogul’s plot to seriously restrict the right to bear arms. But the only other conceivable audience for this low-budget, high-concept sci-fi action-thriller would be B-movie fanatics with a deep-rooted fondness for the sort of ’80s direct-to-video concoctions that once littered shelves at Blockbuster outlets. At one point, a character here pointedly asks for soda and popcorn as he watches action unfold on big-screen monitors. In real-life, however, viewers more likely will be consuming brewskies and microwaved burritos as the absurdities proceed apace.

The plot has something to do with a video-game developer who’s been implanted with a device that more or less turns him into a real-world first-person shooter, and has something else to do with an agoraphobic beta-tester forced to »

The xXx: Return of Xander Cage Trailer Goes Back to the Franchise’s Roots

Charismatic Cardboard & Xander CagexXx: Return of Xander Cage is brings the series back to its B-movie roots.

After years of playing video games at friends’ houses, my family got a GameCube in 2002. Finally I could play all the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 that my nine year-old heart desired, though I honestly played way more Pro Skater 4. Too uncoordinated (and too afraid) to skateboard, I had a Razor Scooter. The time I didn’t spend outside was split between games, television, and movies. I was the target audience for xXx.

Thirteen years and a little maturity later, I am stoked for xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

Fullscreen, Crypt TV Team Up For Horror Series Competition

14 July 2016 1:59 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Digital studio Fullscreen and Eli Roth’s horror platform Crypt TV are searching for the next great horror series. The two companies have joined forces for El Terror, a filmmaking competition that will award a series deal to its winning creative team.

The rules for El Terror are simple: Potential entrants can head over to the contest’s official website, where they will be invited a single 30-second clip that shows off the concept for their most terrifying, bone-chilling web series idea. Submissions will be accepted until September 1st, at which point the contest’s three celebrity judges -- Roth, Danny Trejo, and Julia Kelly -- will choose 10 finalists, all of whom will develop “series bibles” alongside Crypt TV. Ultimately, a winner will be selected, and their series will be developed for distribution on the recently-launched fullscreen streaming video service.

The El Terror contest is designed to be purely democratic, »

7 New Netflix Shows to Binge Watch in July 2016 (And the Best Episodes of Each)

1 July 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

1. “BoJack Horseman” Season 3 (available July 22)

Why Should I Watch It? “BoJack Horseman” is a literal and figurative treasure trove of joy, insight and harsh truths. On the literal side, so many small moments pop up throughout the 30-minute episodes it takes repeat viewings to appreciate them all — from the .gif-worthy transitionary bits to the heavy-hitting quips. Yet figuratively, “BoJack” offers up a distinct, strong viewpoint that isn’t afraid to take questions to an existential level, which creates deeper subjective realizations each time you watch (and re-watch, and re-watch, and re-watch…). This is as “must-see” as TV gets — every time.

Best Episode: We wouldn’t dare spoil the new season — not even by telling you what episode to look forward to — and we’ve already covered Season 2. (After much deliberation, we chose “Escape From L.A.” as the best episode.) So let’s just set this time aside to honor the »

Exclusive Interview with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez

Robert Rodriguez interview

Movie director Robert Rodriguez is one of our favourites. His resume includes DesperadoSin City, The FacultySpy Kids, From Dusk Till Dawn, Planet Terror and Machete, and eclectic range of genre films that all hit the right spot.

Rodriguez is somewhat of a maverick film director. He’s not one to play by the expected rules of the movie world, be that in what he puts on the screen or how he interacts with his peers. During his career he has left both the screen writers and directors guild in favour of blazing his own path. His latest venture has been to create his own television network ‘El Rey’ which caters to a Latin American audience.

He used the platform to bring back a project from his past From Dusk Till Dawn; the film starred George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino as brothers and criminal Seth and Richard Gecko. »

Why William Shatner Joined a Group of U.S. Military Veterans to Make a Zombie Comedy

17 June 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

What do U.S. military veterans know about making movies? If the early success of the zombie comedy “Range 15” is any indication — kind of a lot, actually.

Billed as the first film to be produced by and star primarily U.S. military veterans, the movie claimed the Best Film Award at the GI Film Festival last month and has already generated more than $500,000 in its first week at the box office, showing on more than 550 screens through the crowdsourcing company Tugg, which lets individuals choose a film they want to pay to see in theaters. The film first hit theaters on Wednesday, June 15.

Storks Trailer #3 Flies in with a Very Special Delivery

16 June 2016 7:53 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Animated adventures have been big at the box office over the past decade, but it's a genre usually dominated by Pixar, Disney and DreamWorks. Though Warner Bros. has also had its fare share of CG hits, the studio returns this fall with its most ambitious comedy yet! Storks is in theaters this September. Today, we have the third exciting trailer along with the official one-sheet poster, which asks you to 'Find your flock!'

Storks arrives in 3D and 2D in select theaters on September 23. Nicholas Stoller, best known for such raunchy comedies as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, Neighbors and this summer's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, takes his first stab at making a family movie everyone can enjoy. He directs alongside Doug Sweetland. The duo are working from a script Nicholas Stoller wrote himself. Stoller is also producing alongside Brad Lewis. Executive Producers include 21 Jump Street directing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are joined by Glenn Ficarra, John Requa and Jared Stern.

Leading the ensemble voice cast are Andy Samberg and Kelsey Grammer. They are joined by a vast array of talent from the world of film and television including Katie Crown, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Danny Trejo, and Ty Burrell. Iconic actress Jennifer Aniston finally makes a return to the animated world with her first voice role since taking on the 1999 classic Iron Giant. There will also be a few surprises to discover along the way.

Storks imagines what happened to the folklore of yesteryear in an age when social media allows everyone in the delivery room. These once proud birds used to deliver babies. Now, they deliver packages for a global internet retail giant. Junior, the company's top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl.

Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop, in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks' true mission in the world.&#160Along with the new trailer and poster, Warner Bros. is also introducing a few new treats for fans to get excited about the movie.

The studio has officially launched the Storks company site, which takes audiences inside Stork mountain. Now you can get an inside look at the inner workings of the Cornerstor at www.InsideStorkMountain.com. There is also the exciting Stork Delivery Dash game. Wondering if you have what it takes to soar to the top of Stork Mountain? Storks Delivery Dash lets you join the exciting world of winged delivery service. Fly through the neighborhood and deliver packages by air with flawless timing and stork-like precision. And remember to watch out for obstacles! Cornerstone relies on dependability! But before you get all wrapped up in that fun, be sure to check out the new poster and trailer, which promises to be a lot of fun on its own! In theaters only this fall.

Danny Trejo wants ‘Machete Kills in Space’ as badly as we do

5 June 2016 6:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Recently we caught up with director Robert Rodriguez and took the opportunity to probe him for information about when we might get that second Machete sequel, Machete Kills in Space. Sadly he remained tight-lipped sharing only that “…that’s the eternal question. It’s possible, its definitely possible.”

We’ll happily take a possibility as the first two movies, which star Danny Trejo as an all-round Mexican badass, were a lot of fun and ooze booze, bullets and big name cast. It seems we’re not alone in our desire to see Machete return as Rodriguez told us that Mr Trejo is definitely up for a third round, “Danny’s always calling saying ‘when are we going to start? When are we going to start?‘”

Shooting won’t happen in the immediate future though as Robert’s hard at work on Alita: Battle Angel with James Cameron and will start »

Watch ‘Game of Thrones’ Ramsay Bolton Actor Sing About Why He’s Not Really Evil (Video)

We haven’t seen Ramsay Bolton on the last couple episode of “Game of Thrones,” but it’s only a matter of time before he shows up again to stick a knife in another victim’s throat. In the meantime, Welsh actor Iwan Rheon wants you to know that just because he plays a flaying, castrating psychopath on TV doesn’t mean he is one in real life. That’s why Rheon joined fellow actors Danny Trejo and Steve Buscemi — who are both infamous for playing villains — in a soulful lament of their reputations for NBC’s “Red Nose Day” special. »

Ramsay Bolton Wants You to Know That He's Not a Bad Guy, Really

27 May 2016 1:36 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

If we had to guess lyrics that Game of Thrones' Ramsay Bolton might sing, "People think I'm scary, but I'm gentle as a baby duck" wouldn't come to mind. But for the 2016 Red Nose Day campaign (which raises money for children in need), Ramsay actor Iwan Rheon teamed up with other famous "bad guys" Danny Trejo and Steve Buscemi to create a hilarious musical spectacular about the struggle of being mistaken for mean dudes. Hearing Rheon sing "I'm not really mean, I just happen to look that way" will make you feel a little guilty for your intense hatred of Ramsay and his horrific actions, but the fact that the actor is perceived as mean says loads about his impressive performance! Give the Red Nose Day song a listen, and you'll feel a little more kindly toward talented-but-typecast actors in the future. »
