Review: On 'The Americans,' Paige has had just about enough of this spy s--t

18 May 2016 8:07 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's The Americans coming up just as soon as I assign you to eat a Twinkie... "Are you serious? Do you hear yourselves?" -Paige In yet another episode this season that would have done very well being called "Travel Agents" if the title wasn't already spoken for, two men we know well take trips out of the country that put them in jeopardy. One's going to return home alive and with an amusing story, while the other won't ever get to start up that stamp collection, but both their misadventures should leave deep and lasting scars for all the surviving characters. Let's start in Thailand, where Gaad is dead. Richard Thomas was likely going to be off the show either way — it badly undercuts the Martha defection storyline if Gaad somehow remains involved in Stan's work, even as a civilian offering free advice — and this way, he goes out with a bang, »

Review: 'The Americans' zeroes in on the hunt for Martha in 'Travel Agents'

27 April 2016 8:01 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's The Americans coming up just as soon as I have borscht for the first time in a long time... "I want it to stop, Clark. I want it to end." -Martha There's usually a lot going on in your average Americans episode: family drama, FBI drama, intrigue at the Rezidentura (and/or back in the Ussr, when Nina was still alive), plus at least a couple of different operations for Philip and Elizabeth to mount. This works to the show's enormous benefit, since it conveys just how ragged the Centre runs our main characters, and since the overscheduled frenzy of their lives is an effective metaphor for the problems your average married couple constantly juggles, even without honeypots and assassinations and deep cover identities mixed in. That hectic design also means that when the show drops everything else to tell essentially one story for the hour, »

Review: Can 'The Americans' bring Martha in from the cold?

20 April 2016 8:03 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's The Americans coming up just as soon as I show you how to do your homework on the computer... "I think Martha's bad." -Stan Few things can be more frustrating than watching a TV show where you know much more about what's happening than the characters do. Even if it's not the fault of the ones in the dark, it's hard for them to not come across as dumb, irritating plot devices. Somehow, The Americans has made it three and a half seasons (and counting) with Stan not figuring out what his neighbors are up to — other than a brief whiff of suspicion way back in the very first episode — without damaging that character in the slightest. Stan is impulsive and willful and not immune to mistakes, but there's never a moment where he and Philip are hanging out where I want to scream at the TV, »

Causality and Kindness: Nelson’s Latest Look at All the Lonely People

The multifaceted Tim Blake Nelson unveils his latest directorial effort in nearly seven years with Anesthesia, a New York set drama focused on a series of interconnected characters leading up to a brutal crime of the narrative’s central figure. It’s sometimes easy to forget Nelson, perhaps best known as a character actor in an incalculable amount of arresting performances across a variety of films, is also an accomplished writer and director, premiering his own eclectic five features since his first (and best) 1997 debut Eye of God. Since then, he made a contemporized version of Shakespeare’s Othello in 2001 with O, an English language drama centered on a rebellious group of Sonderkomandos attempting to overthrow their Nazi captors in the grueling The Grey Zone (also 2001) and a comedy crime drama Leaves of Grass (2009) with Edward Norton pulling double duty as twins. »
